Actually, if you want perfect popcorn, splurge on coconut oil. Trust me.

And yeah, popcorn salt is awesome.

Based on that episode, I actually bought some different kinds of popcorn to try them and it's amazing the texture, flavor and size of the varieties. Screw the Orville Reddenbacher popcorn... that stuff is the worst.

I've been using peanut oil for my popcorn for years. It's superior to every other oil simply because of the aroma. Never smelled better popcorn. I also don't use popcorn salt. I use "lite" salt (50% potassium chloride). Works just as well.

Brand of popcorn doesn't really matter. It's all about the preparation. I use generic HyVee kernels and it's still the best popcorn I've ever had.

Coconut oil is the best. It's what they used to use in movie theaters until the health scares for various foods hit and they changed over to crappier oils.

I use the coconut oil in the professional-style popcorn machine I bought for my home. I add real butter, a sprinkle of salt, and some pepper on occasion.

Oh man, I totally disagree. I think coconut oil gives popcorn that real, professionally made smell. Like Just Passin' By said, it's what the theaters used to use before the health factor came into play.

To each his own, but I think coconut oil knocks popcorn out of the park.

I've been all over the world more times than I can count and have had popcorn in many forms, from many locales, and they all suck. Peanut or coconut oil it doesn't matter.

The only thing keeping the popcorn industry alive is the movie theaters and women in the workplace who are on their 23rd diet of the year in the 25th week of the year.

I treat it like a cast iron skillet. I just wipe it down w/ hot water and a paper towel, then pretend that the remaining debris is adding to the flavor and not harmful.

Oil, salt, and popcorn are all that goes on it. I don't think it has to be cleaned that well to be safe. Also, the professional popcorn makers never have the container that the oil goes in cleaned.

I also like M&M's with my popcorn.
As a kid we would have popcorn cake. It was popcorn mixed with that jarred marshmellow stuff, peanuts, and M&Ms. Moms put it in an angel food cake pan and let it set up. Could cut it like a piece of cake. It was good as a kid.

Healthy and oil don't go in the same sentence.

Per the Mayo Clinic's website:

When choosing fats, olive oil is a healthy choice. Olive oil contains monounsaturated fat, a healthier type of fat that can lower your risk of heart disease by reducing the total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad") cholesterol levels in your blood.

In contrast, saturated and trans fats — such as butter, animal fats, tropical oils and partially hydrogenated oils — increase your risk of heart disease by increasing your total and LDL cholesterol levels.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), consuming about 2 tablespoons (23 grams) of olive oil a day may reduce your risk of heart disease. You can get the most benefit by substituting olive oil for saturated fats rather than just adding more olive oil to your diet.

All types of olive oil contain monounsaturated fat, but "extra-virgin" or "virgin" olive oils are the least processed forms, so they're the most heart healthy. Those types contain the highest levels of polyphenols, a powerful antioxidant that also can promote heart health.

Trails End FTW

If there's anyone interested in getting some Trails End popcorn, my son is a cub scout and they're currently having their Trails End popcorn sales drive.
I know we're really not supposed to post things like this, but hey, it's for a good cause.
I believe 70% of all sales proceeds go to support his pack.
Here's a link to purchase directly from Trails End and he and his pack get credit for the sales through this link. The sales drive ends this Sunday, November 22nd. Be sure you're sitting down, Trails End is very proud of their popcorn and they have priced it accordingly.:)

Bump because I have found the secret to the holy grail that is movie theater popcorn at home.

Friends, the secret is Flavorcol, and it's like $8 on Amazon. This is the orange powder the theater puts a scoop of in the popper when they drop the kernels. Drop 1/2 tsp. with 1/3 c. of kernels into the oil and you're on the way.

Pair that with coconut oil for popping, a great popcorn (I'm really digging the stuff I'm getting from Crown Jewel (https://www.crownjewelgourmet.com/)), and clarified butter, and you're set.

Baby Lee
10-03-2017, 01:19 PM
Wish I'd known that was a secret.

I thought everyone knew about Flavacol, if that's the flavor you're after.

Basically the same thing, down to the packaging for 75 or so years.

I didn't work in a movie theater, but they made popcorn for the teachers in the front office in HS and I had 'office class' as a senior in the morning, so I was the one who was in charge of the popper. We went through about 8-10 cartons that semester.

Pretty much everywhere has it, you just might not notice. It's like $2 at Walmart

I haven't bought it in forever, because I prefer most any flavoring to movie theater faux butter, but my uncle-in-law eats it like it's a sacrament.

My new favorite flavoring is to use a sweet-hot barbecue sauce [Ms. Renfro's Ghost Pepper for me] and just sprinkle it lightly. Comes out like a cross between kettle corn and caramel corn, with a bbq flavor.

Secret with cast iron.

Put the fat in and put the heat on, then only put 2-3 kernels in the pot.

Then when those 2-3 kernels pop, take it off the heat and dump the rest of the kernels in, swish it around so the kernels get good and coated, . . . and heated. About 25-30 seconds.

That way all the kernels heat up until ALMOST ready to pop before you put the cast iron back on the heat. Then they're more likely to all pop at once and you won't burn the early poppers waiting for the stragglers.
