Goff will miss remainder of season (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/chiefs/story/1564453.html)

Chiefs guard Mike Goff was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, and the shoulder injury that kept him out of Sunday’s starting lineup also will end the veteran’s season.

Kansas City signed Goff during the offseason, after he had played his first 11 seasons with Cincinnati and San Diego. Goff, 33, started the first seven games this season.

Coach Todd Haley said Wednesday that Andy Alleman probably will move into the starting role. Alleman, whom the Chiefs acquired in a trade earlier this season with Miami, started against Jacksonville.

“Andy stepped in and played, and he missed a couple of plays but fought back and finished the game strong,” Haley said. “We’ll have to carry on. Guys have to step in.

“We got him for a reason. He’s worked hard, and he’s battled some things physically, but I think he’s a tough guy who wants to play and show what he’s capable of.”

Haley said that Ike Ndukwe, who came to Kansas City in the same trade with Miami, also could play at guard. Haley said he thought that was Ndukwe’s best position, despite that he has played only tackle for the Chiefs this season. Ndukwe started three games at right tackle before being benched in favor of Ryan O’Callaghan.

“Whatever they need,” Ndukwe said. “I just want to get back on the field as soon as possible, so whatever it is.”

Rogers takes an important phone call

Linebacker Justin Rogers, whom the Chiefs re-signed to fill Goff’s roster spot, was in Basehor on a deer hunting trip Wednesday when his father called and said he was rejoining the Chiefs.

Rogers said Wednesday that he was in a tree stand and that his agent called his father to tell him the news.

“I shuffled down the tree and headed over here to practice,” Rogers said, adding that he took his dad’s call around 9:30 a.m. and drove straight to Kansas City’s practice, which began around 11 a.m.

Rogers said he had been hunting since about 5:30 a.m. and saw several deer before his phone rang.

“Drove straight here,” he said, “and suited up.”

Smith might be ready to start at running back

Haley didn’t rule out Wednesday that Kolby Smith has progressed enough from his knee injury last year that he might be able to take over the starting running back job.

“He’s worked really hard, so I wouldn’t put it past him,” Haley said. “I’m still trying to keep it within reason and not have the expectations too high and understand what the situation is. But I would say Kolby Smith is the type of guy who could surprise you.”

Jamaal Charles also could start Sunday at Oakland. Charles and Smith, along with Dantrell Savage, shared carries against Jacksonville.

Other injuries

Linebacker David Herron (knee) did not participate in Wednesday’s practice. Linebacker Jovan Belcher (head), wide receiver Chris Chambers (foot), center Wade Smith (ankle) and linebacker Mike Vrabel (hip) were limited, and free safety Jon McGraw (thigh) was a full participant.

Goff out for the season? PBJ

No but seriously that's got to be the last time we ever see him in a Chiefs uniform right? He's been a complete bust as a FA pickup.

Egg on Pioli's face on that one.

I'm sure he'll do alright missing the rest of the season, he's been missing blocks thus far anyway, so he's got a lot of practice.

I'd much rather see Darryl Harris on the roster.

It is too bad Colin Brown is on IR or maybe he'd get some experience at this point.

Praise the Lord. Now we can only get someone to take out Niswanger we'll be able to run and pass protect like a real NFL team.

Is there anyone that can help me understand why the Chiefs would replace Goff's roster spot with a linebacker and not a safety or another o-lineman? Even if it's another Patriots reject, wouldn't we be better off trying out someone at one of those two positions? If we are gonna sign Patriots rejects off the street, shouldn't it atleast be a position of need?

why would you want to fill a position of need when you have a chance to do so?

o linemen take too long getting out of tree stands

safety is not a position of need as we have mike "don't-call-me-jackie" brown & dajuan "i-can-dance-better-than-bernie" morgan running down opposing receivers

pay attention there, young fella

it is all part of the process
