Rumors fly of possible NFLPA concessions

Posted by Mike Florio on November 14, 2009 4:40 PM ET

Though the NFL and the union have agreed not to talk publicly about their ongoing Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations, word of some of the details have been leaking out via private avenues.

Per a league source, there's talk that the NFLPA is willing to agree to the expansion of the regular season to 18 games.

(We've long believed that talk from the league of an 18-game regular season was aimed at securing the addition of one game, moving the total number of games to 17.)

The source also says that, as an inducement to getting a deal done before the start of the uncapped year, the union is willing to adhere to the free-agency eligibility rules that will apply in 2010 absent a new labor deal. Specifically, players whose contracts expire after the season would be required to have six years of service in order to be eligible for unrestricted free agency.

Though the players who will be restricted free agents under that scenario might not be too pleased, the reality is that they'll be restricted free agents if no deal is done at all.

But if the Chiefs only have two preseaon games, how will they be able to tell who the best third string tight end will be?

That would be tragic.

They would have no chance to figure out who the "Right 53" are.

18 games is ludicrous. There's no way the best team would win the Super Bowl (and maybe not even make the playoffs) due to inevitable injury.

The owners are being far too greedy. This doesn't bode well IMO for 2011.

I agree, 18 games is dumb. They're gonna have to have an additional 1-2 bye weeks

I hate this potential move despite loving football.

I don't want to see 3 diff 2000 yd rushers every year.

I don't want to see a 2000 yd wr if it took 18 games.

All of the records would be skewed again. 14 was too few, but 16 is perfect.

Players wouldn't last as many seasons, either.

Scheduling would be a nightmare.

Would they need two bye weeks?

Too many problems. Leave it the fuck alone.

I think I heard of them expanding the roster if they do make the change.

Then they might as well re-expand the draft back to 17 rounds and then add another additional 20 or so.

What a bunch of Sad Sally's on this board...
During the merger people said it wouldn't work.....it did
going from 14 to 16 games people said it wouldn't work....it did
going from 28 to 32 teams people said it wouldn't work....it did
adding a bye week people said it wouldn't work....it did
going from 3 to 4 divisions and realignment people said it wouldn't work....it did.

As a season ticket holder I'm paying for 10 games as is. If one of those is no longer a practice and means something....I win.

More regular season games means more TV money for players and owners. Get over it things change.

I don't get the big problem, they all already play 20 games, sometimes 21 before playoffs.

It is still two more games. 16 games is plenty enough. Anymore and you are going to see players grind down, especially the big boys.

Love it. Make it 20 and just get rid of the pre-season altogether. Teams will adapt.

I don't get this comment. Are you saying the best team would be subject to more random injuries in those two extra games than other teams?

I know there would be a slight increase in the risk of injury simply because of more exposure but are you suggesting that playoff teams players grind down more and have a shorter shelf life than non-playoff teams?

Iwould almost bet that if they make a change to the draft, it would be fewer, rather than more, rounds.

I could see them dropping two rounds.

The draft was contracted from 17 to 12 to 7 rounds because of expansion, and they've expanded more since the last contraction.

Last year, Tom Brady was injured in game one.

There's no denying that they were the best team in the NFL and Super Bowl bound WITH Brady.

The point is that since injuries that take the best teams out of contention each year over the course of 16 games happen frequently, I find it highly likely that the best team entering each season wouldn't finish that way due to the increase of injuries sustained over an 18 game season.

Injuries are already a significant part of the game. Why make them even more significant, especially at a time when talent is spread so thin as it is?

I deny that they were the best team last year, even with Brady.

The Steelers were a better team.
They had O-Line issues, but they also have a far more aggressive and better defense, and playmakers at WR, and QB who is every bit as clutch as Brady.

If they had met in the playoffs, my money would have been on the Steelers.

Paying full price for preseason games sucks ass. Make the games count and worth the money. I dig the NFL, why wouldn't you want more games played?
