I hate to say this, but my gut tells me that if the Rai-turds beat us, they will beat us badly in this one, and the Planet will reverberate with calls for Haley to be fired.

Russell regressing from 2008

David White, Chronicle Staff Writer
Sunday, November 15, 2009

As quarterback JaMarcus Russell goes, so goes the Oakland Raiders' season. That explains their 2-6 record with one half to go.

His two touchdown throws are dwarfed by 14 turnovers. His completion rate and passer rating are second to one - Cleveland's Derek Anderson. In a league with 33 qualifying quarterbacks, Russell ranks 32nd.

Raiders owner Al Davis asks for patience with his former No. 1 overall pick. Let's see how much patience Davis shows coach Tom Cable if he keeps losing games while Russell's development takes its sweet time.

"I did OK, but it could be a lot better than what it was," Russell said. "Got some bad breaks, but other than that, I think I can do a whole lot better."
If Russell can simply do as well as he did last season, that would be better - and mind you, he wasn't very good last year, either, as a first-year starter.

Compare the 2008 and 2009 midseason marks, and Russell has regressed in completions, completion rate, touchdowns, interceptions and passer rating.
Cable likes to say it is because the offense is missing four starters, but last year's offense was just as last-ranked bad.
The 2008 team had penalty-prone Kwame Harris botching it at left tackle. And, running back Darren McFadden was just as hurt last season. For all last year's experience at wide receiver, they had just as many 100-yard games as this batch: none.

No matter the supporting cast, the Raiders drafted Russell to be a difference-maker. If they wanted someone who depended on others to succeed, they might as well have stuck with Andrew Walter or Marques Tuiasosopo.

Quarterbacks "can win it with one throw," Cable said. "I don't think anybody else on the team has that ability to change a game like that. A guard, a DB, a linebacker, no one has the ability to have the ball in their hands all the time where they can affect the game."
So, how can Russell start to affect the game in a good way? Admitting there are problems is a good start.

Russell knows his pocket awareness cost the team five lost fumbles, tied for the most by a single NFL player. He understands turnovers got him benched in Week 7 for the first time in his life.
Asked about the passing game, Russell said he has to do a better job of getting the ball in the hands of the receivers, who have a league-low 28 catches.

Everyone keeps telling Russell to go work harder for longer hours. That's just the way it is for quarterbacks. That's why he took a day to study film over his three-day bye weekend.
OK, so Rich Gannon watched more film than that in his sleep. No one said Russell has arrived, and if anything, that indicates why he's so late landing on the scene.

"Just sat back and thought about the things we've been through, good and bad, learn from it, go out this team and be better than it was," Russell said. "It's going to have to be more grind that it was the first half to become what we want."

What is it they want, anyway? Simple, Cable said. They want a quarterback who puts up Pro Bowl numbers. That's the surest way to escape the land of double-digit losses.
After all, that's why they drafted Russell with the No. 1 overall pick.
"Throw 20 touchdowns, not turn it over anymore and be about 66-67 percent completion," Cable said. "I think that'd be pretty good."

Final word: The Chiefs have beaten the Raiders six straight times at the Coliseum, tied for the longest streak by any opponent in franchise history.

How impressive is that number? Half those six Chiefs teams finished with losing seasons.

Only two Raiders have experienced Coliseum-based wins against the Chiefs: Sebastian Janikowski and Shane Lechler.:(

I think it will be a close game and one of two things will happen. The Chiefs defense finally gives up in the fourth after having been on the field for 35 minutes and the Faiders win 23-12. Or, after the Chief's offense finally gets their first conversion in the 3rd quarter, Todd Haley figures out that Cassel must throw at last 10 yards for the team to be productive. They score 21 points in the last 10 minutes and they win 24-23. 75% of Chiefsplanet now feel the Chiefs are over the hump and confident that they'll win the rest of the games this season.

3 times this year Haley just let Cassel fling it. At the end against Oakland, at the end against Dallas, and last week. Just let him fling it. Hurry up offense. On the fly. The Chiefs would win easily.
Btw, it was in Oakland last year that Cassel had one of his best games, just days after his father passed away. 4 touchdown passes in the first half I believe. But no Favre-like mention of it because only Favres father counts in the NFL.

I agree. I said the same thing after last week's game. Hopefully he realizes this and the fact that he now has a back that can catch too.

IF. IF. Chambers isn't a fluke and Haley let's him fling it, Cassel will have his first 300 yard game this year and they win easy.

I've just noticed a disturbing pattern. The first team in the title of official game threads loses disproportionately. In fact, they've lost 28 out of the last 31 game threads. Perhaps we should trash this game thread and create a new "Raiders vs. Chiefs" game thread.

OK... here's the Great S&B Hope for this game:

Gallery & Green back from injury on the O-line will help the running game.

WR Schillens back from injury will raise the completion count from 5 to 8.

McFadden back from injury will open up the playbook a bit.

Those three things happen & this game is an even-steven toss-up.

Todd Haley's five 'o clock shadow gives us +3 in Strength & +1 in Magic. If the entire offensive line is sporting beards, we're likely to win this one.

However, if JaMarcus Russell sprinkled heroin on his endless stack of pancakes, we could be in for a disappointment.

Yeah Chambers should have had it, but if the QB could throw a decent deep ball that he could catch on the run and not have to come back for a jump ball it would make things a hell of a lot easier.

Baby Lee
11-15-2009, 03:20 PM
I'm gonna say it, if your receiver has time to turn back, stop, waive for a fair catch, and fix a club sandwich before your duck comes back to earth, you're not throwing so goodly.

By what simply throwing the ball? Just because it got to the WRs general area doesn't mean it was a good throw. Chambers had his guy, but instead had to come back for a jump ball. I know we haven't seen it for a while, but ideally the WR is supposed to be able to catch the ball on the run.
