But Bill Self leaves the starters in too long to run up the score and then Karma steps in and Xavier, Collins, and Aldrich all tear their knees and are out for the season.

Considering the fact that the KU basketball game is tonight, it makes sense to talk about that today. KU football vs Texas is Saturday. Besides, this season has been a major disappointment. I don't even want to think about it anymore. :banghead: I still watch the games, but that has been painful lately.

Self doesn't have to leave the starters in to run up the score. He has firepower on the bench.

While I think we'll win with relative ease, this game will be quite a step up in terms of athletic ability from our first 3 games. Should be interesting to see how we match up with actual basketball players.

I think what was considered "fast paced" in the first few games will look more "sloppy" in this one, since we can't rely purely on athletic ability and skill.

They're not likely to suck, no. KU should win handily, but Memphis won't suck. Josh Pastner, losing Cal's 2009 recruits, salvaged the recruiting class and made it a top 25 class. The guy can recruit. His 2010 class is already projected #2.

Definitely pulling in some talent. Looks like Calipari leaving didn't hurt nearly as bad as it appeared it would. And I would agree, Memphis will make some noise this year.

There's NO depth inside. They have 2 guys who you'd consider big men (Coleman and Niles). Coleman is athletic and physically imposing, but he's coming from JUCO ball so he hasn't had to deal with an Aldrich type. Memphis is decent to good on the perimeter though, with Elliott Williams (Duke transfer), Roburt Sallie, Doneal Mack and Willie Kemp. Wesley Witherspoon is a thin 6'8 kid who's very talented, but likely to play some PF due to the lack of numbers inside.

Memphis will need to knock down 3's to compete to the end in this one.

Pastner didn't really salvage Cal's recruiting class. X is at KU, Cousins/Wall (who hadn't technically committed to Memphis)/Dodson are at Kentucky and Nolan Dennis is at Baylor I believe. The only one to stay with Memphis is Will Coleman. Pastner got a committment from Latavious Williams, but he went pro somewhere ---- Siberia maybe. A recruit from France tore his ACL before ever getting to school.

However, Memphis now has the unquestioned #1 recruiting class for 2010. Per Rivals rankings, they have the overall #8, #11, #12, #47 and #66 ranked players in the country, along with another couple of 3 stars. He'll be loaded next season.

I give props to Memphis. They played as well as you possibly could.

I don't think 34% from the field and 6 of 25 from three is as well as they can possibly play. KU is generally a good defensive team, but Memphis missed a ton of open looks from the perimeter. Sallie was 0 for 6 from three, and he's their best shooter.

I'm proud of the Tigers effort, and they're clearly better than many thought. Disappointed they couldn't pull off the win though. That would have been a huge feather in the cap come tourney time.

When Memphis had a shot to win the game - a part of me actually wanted that three to drain. At so early in the season - it would of been a good wake up call. I was so dismayed with how we took care of the ball. We were running around with chickens w/ our heads cut off. I've never seen Tyshawn Taylor play so poorly before.

KU was the better team tonight, the turnovers (20+?) and those crazy miracle 3's at the end kept it close.

-Aldrich played great, he may just best player in college basketball this season.
-Collins better not cramp up in more important games in the future, get in shape. The guy played well when he was actually on the floor, but his absence meant the terrible Reed had to get a lot of minutes.
-Taylor was awful...I think he had 6-7 turnovers by himself. His head wasn't in the game at all.
-Henry was inconsistent, he'll be better.
-I was impressed by the Morrises, they are much better this year than last year. They should be quality role players going forward.

We've got nearly 3 weeks until our next "real" game against UCLA. Time to get better.

Exactly. Who ever said you had to lose to get a wakeup call. I'd rather this team get taken to the wire like this on the first "real" game against good competition, while at the same time sneaking out the win. I just hope it was enough of a wake up call. That being said like you pointed out there is 3 weeks until UCLA for them to get things together and start playing better TEAM ball.

To be fair...like Memphis, UCLA isn't the same UCLA teams we've seen in recent seasons. While they're definitely no gimme, they're struggling bad right now and just lost to Cal State-Fullerton.

But that's 2-3 weeks from now and UCLA has time to improve and the game is all the way out in LA on the west coast so it should be a good road test for Kansas. Though if KU plays like they can, they shouldn't have any problem against UCLA.

I'm sure the team learned a lot, and no one got hurt. That's the best thing you can take from an early game like this.

KU 5 on 5 is more talented than most teams in America and if you just let them play one game they will most likely beat most teams in America. However getting those guys to play within Self's system that is new to them will take some time and will look ugly in the beginning. The same can be said with every team playing with an influx of new players. That's why you see some upsets early and games that are closer than they should be right now.

2. Henry took a few poor shots. The kid needs to learn that you can't do that shit in Div. I hoops. An example would be when he took it down the lane into 3 or 4 Memphis defenders. Rather than being smart and finding an open teammate, he decided to take the shot anyway. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I dont think they necessarily have big heads.....they're Kansas, they go into most seasons with a target on their back, competing for a National Title. It's the 2nd game of the season against a pretty good team. Memphis is no slouch. But I really don't think things are up to par, and they will grow throughout the season. Even teams like UNC, UCLA, Mich ST, GTown, 'Cuse have all struggled at one point this season all ready. Just because they played sloppy doesn't mean they have big heads really. They just need time to grow with eachother. As good as X Henry can be....He's still a freshman and he's gonna make mistakes. Taylor will improve and play better, if he doesn't, Self could replace some of his minutes with Elijah Johnson. Once Kansas gets rolling on all cylinders, they're gonna be fine...and deadly for their opponents. They have a few weeks to tweek their shit before they go out west to face UCLA.

Paul Pierce used to take those shots all the time - and they went in. X is no Paul Pierce, but making those shots is only a good shot at certain times when our offense is stagnant. He doesn't need to do that pull up jumper w/ 31 seconds left still on the shot clock w/ no rebounders under the hoop. If we pass it around and still can't get it inside or a good look - he should fire away. If he can knock those down and learn to play within the offense - look out.
