Dwayne Bowe suspended for violating steroids policy (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/11/17/dwayne-bowe-suspended-for-violating-steroids-policy/)
Posted by Mike Florio on November 17, 2009 1:50 PM ET
And just as the Chiefs finally have seen a problem player land with a new team, another promising young player has become a major problem.

Receiver Dwayne Bowe has been suspended four games for violating the league's policy regarding anabolic steroids and related substances.

The team announced the move earlier in the hour. The suspension begins immediately.

The development means that Bowe has exhausted all internal appeals, or opted not to pursue them.

The specific substance for which he tested positive isn't known, and it's possible that the violation occurred in 2008 or earlier. It's also possible that Bowe didn't test positive; some players have been suspended based on evidence of possession of banned substances.

He'll miss games against the Steelers, Chargers, Broncos, and Bills. He'll then return for the final three games of the year, against the Browns, Bengals, and Broncos.

This may have been why they were either trying to unload him, or why they were unable to unload him...

Schefter: Chiefs WR Bowe Took Diuretic, Chose Not to Appeal Suspension

Adam Schefter of ESPN is sifting through the current situation with Dwayne Bowe that has him suspended for four games by the NFL. Per Schefter, Bowe likely took something to help him lose weight, similar to the situation with Kevin and Pat Williams in Minnesota.

"From what I gather," Schefter tweets, "Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe was trying to lose weight in training camp and took a diuretic. Bowe found out about his suspension earlier this month and has decided not to appeal it. He knows those are battles players don't win."

Wow.

The irony in all this is that head coach Todd Haley ran what he called the toughest training camp in the NFL and demanded many players lose weight. Haley has said the Chiefs as a team lost over 800 pounds.

Bowe was reportedly one of those players who had to lose weight. I've heard (but haven't confirmed) that he was asked to lose over 20 pounds.

Bowe's decision not to appeal it is a good one, I think. It's unlikely he would have emerged victorious and the best move would be let it end now.

Kent Babb on Twitter confirmed that Dwayne Bowe reported at OTA's 30 pounds overweight.

30 pounds.

I'm guessing it was a weight-loss drug that triggered his suspension.

If this is the case, then we should expect to see an appeal similar to the Williams' of the Vikes. It should also have a chance to be successful seeing as they set a precedence with their case... or Roger Gotohell will just drop the hammer on Bowe since Williams (and others) made him look like a bitch for their case last year.

The only points one can draw from this are that

1) Bowe is a dumbass
2) Diuretics are used to meet weight goals.

Despite what you, or Todd Haley, wants to think, numbers on a scale are not important. No, you don't want your players to be disgusting fat bodies, but enforcing rigid weight goals on them (Albert) is counterproductive.

How about you actually think about a weight that would allow them to keep their strength while maximizing their speed.

I don't seem to remember Bowe having a problem at his weight last year. Nor do I remember Albert having one either. If you want to put in weight restrictions, do it with someone like Dorsey who was playing 50 pounds over his college weight.

It doesn't take a fucking genius, it just takes an ability to realize that you have to possess the capacity for nuanced thought.

I think it's pretty clear that he did this to shed weight.

It doesn't take a ****ing genius, it just takes an ability to realize that you have to possess the capacity for nuanced thought.

Your point of view makes sense but I don't think it takes everything into consideration.

Your dealing with a new coaching philosophy that wants and believes different things from the previous coach. Right or wrong it's fact. Also consider that the new coach has said that this is the start of a process. Believe what you want, that's fact. Every coach wants to do things his way and it's take time to get everything that way, that's fact also.

Now consider Albert. Haley has said numerous times that losing weight was important to allow Albert to learn to use technique. The idea is that teach it now and as Albert grows older he won't be as likely to be able to keep his weight down, because as humans go it's harder as you age. So getting Albert to do this is a start of the process to maximize Alberts potential 2 to 3 years down the road when the Chiefs hopefully have other pieces in place. That's the way I see it anyways.

Another consideration for wanting lighter players is the tempo at which Haley wants the offense to run. Herm was happy with conservative ball control, running the clock etc. Haley wants high tempo practices and wants a high tempo offense. You need to be lighter and better conditioned to run a fly route 30-40 yards downfield even as a decoy, then be able to run back to the line of scrimmage in a no-huddle situation. Do that 2 to 3 times in a row for 60 minutes and you need to be in good shape.

Just my opinions but I think it figures into the weight/conditioning equation that the staff has imposed.

Agreed! Pretty ruthless for this offense. I could see maybe a game or 2. Hell- unless I'm off, good luck catching someone taking HGH- which would actually give one a significant performance boost. It sucks, but I think its a stupid rule and not something that really will tarnish my view of DB. There is plenty of relevant criteria to use to come to that determination.

I think Bobby Wade spiked his Gatorade so that he can get off the inactive list on Sundays.

That's a possibility. Hell, Bowe's agent should be on the mike, honking that Lance Fucking Long spiked his drink with that crap.

Marques Colston is 1st. Guess you wouldn't want him, either?

Christ, you guys are ****ing retarded.

FIVE drops. NINE games.

They aren't the issue some of you are making it out to be.

And most of those drops were some hard ass catches. This drop shit has gotten out of hand. I've been watching him this year, and it's not that big a deal.

Yeah, I suppose so. Well, at least he's manning up on his mistake. I can deal with that.

Yeah, I can't.

Bowe isn't stupid, he wasn't tricked, he's not new to this.

Not that it matters, but I'd be curious to know if the diuretic itself was on the banned list, or if an ingredient in said diuretic triggered the failed test.

Either way, he has to know what is going into his body.

Personally, I don't think it's that big a deal. He'll sit his 4, and hopefully learn a lesson.

Agreed. When some develop an opinion about a player, it seems like it would take an act of Congress to get them to change their mind. LOL! My parents are like that. They still think Tamba Hali is a POS, no matter what I say.

Bowe sucks because he drops teh wobble-ball from TEH GREATEST QB EVAR MARK CASTLE AND HE SHOULD BE PUNISHED FOR MAKING TEH CASTLE LOOK BAD BECAUSE CASTLE IS TEH GOD AND I WANT TO WASH HIS BALLS WITH A SHAM-WOW ELEVENTY!!!!!!!!11111!!!!/Buster Hymen.

At least I take a position, and stay with it through an intelligent amount of time to make an assessment. You, not so much.

ROR: Fuck Cassel and the horse he rode in on, I only have eyes for Sanchez.
ROR: Ok, maybe Sanchez isn't all that, but I still love him anyway.
ROR: I love Pollard, fuck Mike Brown.
ROR: Ok, I admit Pollard does suck, I guess we'll go with Mike Brown.
ROR: We finally got rid of the POS Pollard, good luck in Tx you POS.
ROR: OMG Mike Brown sucks, but so does Pollard so we're even.
ROR: OMG Pollard made some tackles in Tx, he must be good now. I love him again.

Diuretics can be used to give you a ripped look, but Bowe's not a bodybuilder.

I think it's pretty clear that he did this to shed weight.

I've known tons of wrestlers that have used them to make weight. If Bowe is getting fined for not making his weight, or he's told to lose a shitload in a short period of time, it seems pretty reasonable that these would be his substances of choice.

Did you read that in the WWE fanclub insider exclusive confessions?

Bowe must have been hanging out with his buddy JaMarcus in the offseason. They probably ate the same things, but looks like only one took the diuretic...

Yeah, it is.

A lot of them are in the bread-basket passes.

And I really don't get it. I can't say he's got bad hands because he catches nearly everything impossible (including the one handed catch last week that didn't count) but he seems to drop everything 'tween the numbers...

He was suspended 4 games for taking a diuretic? FFS COFFEE is a diruetic (caffeine, technically, but still WTF?).

Five Hour Energy on the banned list?

Seems pretty nitpicky to me. Steroids and HGH I can see, but a frigging diuretic?

They're used as a masking agent for steroids, so they're banned as well.

Um, I believe he was referring to college wrestlers, who must make weight or not compete.

I had a friend in high school that wouldn't eat or drink for days before weigh in. He'd just spit all day. I have another friend who was a national championship wrestler that's tiny compared to the rest of his family because he starved himself to make weight, therefore stunting his growth as a teen.

LOL Chambers goes from being cut to the No. 1 receiver? Not like we are going to be able to do anything against the Steelers D this week anyways but this hurts for the next few weeks. My new goal for the season is to sweep the Broncos out of the Playoffs and generally cause trouble in division games and this is going to really set the offense back even more for SD next week and Denver the week after...
