Is this not CLEARLY the best thing the History Channel has ever done?

I am absolutely loving this series.

My kid made me drive her home early from her drawing class early just to watch it. She loves WWII ( Band or Brothers too).

I'd like to see it, but I don't watch a lot of TV so I don't buy cable. Sometimes it sucks when there's something like this I want to see.

Missed last night's but saw the one before and it is an awesome show. I'm not even much of a WWII buff either. Really well made. Kudos to History channel for not subjecting us to another apocalypse show.

Its been very revealing to say the least. I din't know that on the island of Saipai (sp)
the Japanese civilians literally jumped to they're death. According to last nights show
the Japanese soldiers had convinced the japanese civilians that the US soldiers were going to committ rape and an all sorts of disturbing things to them.

They had a video of one one Japanese guy jumping......last nights show had dead bodies floating in the water, whole families that had jumped off the cliffs.

It is one hell of series to say the least. Its very informative, to me at least.

Im reading "Army at Dawn" for the second time. Its the first by Rick Atkinson covering the African campaign. Tremendous read as is his second on the Italian campaign. The third is not out yet.

I've enjoyed it very much. Last night, I also flipped over to Discover or Nat Geo or whatever and watched Hitler's Stealth Fighter. That was really good as well. If they had been able to mass-produce those things, the war could have ended very differently.

They'd still have needed the fuel and oil, though. They didn't really have that.

It's amazing to see how people completely gave up their freedoms. How they were brainwashed by the state media.

There were plenty who went along with it willingly. They thought national socialism was a great thing.

If you get a chance, check out Judgment at Nuremberg. Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster and a bunch of others. Got 11 academy award nominations. All about the trials of some of the Nazi judges. It also goes into what the German people knew and what they didn't know. Fascinating movie.

At the end of the show, they said only 10% of WWII vets are still alive.
Not many of "The Greatest Generation" are left.

Over 70 million people died in WWII, more than half were civilians.

A nuclear exchange now would be 50 times worse.

Sobering.

This show prompted me to look at the average global death rate now. We have over 50 million people die every year world wide. Thats over 140,000 a day. I never really thought about that. Staggering.

Watched every minute of it, some of it twice. Really put the war in perspective, better than any thing prior to this for me.

This is one of the best documentaries evah. Very well done. Lots of information and personal stories never told.

The Japenese unit is the most highly decorated unit ever?
That color footage of 1939 Berlin and Hitler parade/rally. Really scary stuff.
The mass suicides by the japenese soldiers and civilians, you can see why Truman used the bomb. That it would cost millions of lives on both sides to take Japan.

but overalll for me, it highlights the bravery, sacrifice and valor of the greatest generation of Americans since the founders. Our generation pales in comparison to them. A worthy goal to aspire too.

You didn't know that one? I assume you are referring to the 442nd. Did you know that Senator Inouye was a member and won the CMH?

I caught 3 of them today and I'm pretty sure that they were the final 3. Am I missing some?

I agree that this is some of the best TV ever. It has absolutely blown my mind what we were able to accomplish is 4 years.

I have DVRd most of the episodes. I have only watched about 3 episodes so far, but I think it's really good. Lots of color video that gives you a good perspective of what they were dealing. Narration by Gary Sinese. Accounts from real soldiers that have been there and voiced by many famous actors. Very well done.

P.S. Why is this thread in DC?

Basically another band of brothers starting in May '10.
