What in the wide world of sports is happening to this country? Some clown with a chip on his shoulder e-mails he doesn't like what the announcers say so they are suspended for a game?

Do you think their comments (listed below) warranted a suspension?
A stern talking to?
Any response whatsoever?

Clippers longtime play-by-play announcer Ralph Lawler and color analyst Michael Smith were suspended one game by the Fox Sports Prime Ticket cable network for their comments about Memphis center Hamed Haddadi.

Lawler and Smith made their off-the-cuff comments about the Iranian-born center during Wednesday night's telecast from Memphis. The on-air banter offended a viewer who e-mailed Fox to complain....

...The transcript of the conversation between Lawler and Smith, which occurred late in the game, was printed on the Los Angeles Times' Web site:

Smith: "Look who's in."

Lawler: "Hamed Haddadi. Where's he from?"

Smith: "He's the first Iranian to play in the NBA." (Smith pronounced Iranian as "Eye-ranian," a pronunciation that offended the viewer who complained.)

Lawler: "There aren't any Iranian players in the NBA," repeating Smith's mispronunciation.

Smith: "He's the only one."

Lawler: "He's from Iran?"

Smith: "I guess so."

Lawler: "That Iran?"

Smith: "Yes."

Lawler: "The real Iran?"

Smith: "Yes."

Lawler: "Wow. Haddadi that's H-A-D-D-A-D-I."

Smith: "You're sure it's not Borat's older brother?"

Smith: "If they ever make a movie about Haddadi, I'm going to get Sacha Baron Cohen to play the part."

Lawler: "Here's Haddadi. Nice little back-door pass. I guess those Iranians can pass the ball."

Smith: "Especially the post players.

Lawler: "I don't know about their guards."

Pretty low on the offensiveness scale IMHO. But I'd think "don't make fun of players' nationalities" would be a pretty basic rule for broadcasters.

Seems like an "apologize and move on" type of deal to me.

Apologize for what? I'm curious as to what exactly the announcers said that warranted any form of apology.

We are turning into a nation of feminized, overly-sensitive wimps.

What they said was stupid, not offensive. But they work for the Clippers. Suck infiltrates the entire organization.

I wonder how long they'd be suspended if they suggested that we bomb the place off the map.

I think that suspending them was over the top, but think about it this way. Their job is not to make fun of the players about anything. They are supposed to be respectful. And they certainly shouldn't be making fun of the players for their nationality. So, if I was in charge, I would certainly not be happy with what they did.

Again, I would probably just tell them to cut that shit out, but who knows if they've done borderline stuff before?

I would've been fired for making a joke that Iran's Revolutionary Guard couldn't defend against an Israeli fast break.

I think it's hilarious that while this exchange was found to be "offensive", ESPN has absolutely no problem with re-printing it in its entirety.

LMAO

And for the record, the network execs should have had a conversation with the announcers after the broadcast but that's the extent of it.

There were probably a grand total of 10,000 people watching that broadcast.

Probably most of the Iranian population of the US. They tuned in to watch their homeboy. Which would explain the complaints.

I wonder if he will play crappy because he is weak from hunger during Ramadan.

Don't make fun of players nationalities, race or religion on live tv, seems a pretty easy thing to remember and they somehow fucked it up. Do the crime do the time.
