View Full Version : Music I just landed a paid DJ gig - Music selection?

I've never done this before. It's going to be interesting for sure. It's a company holiday party (little late huh?) I'm doing the consult tomorrow with the guy, but he told me today he wants to go heavy dance music.

Do I need to scratch records here? If so, it's going to be really interesting. LMAO Needless to say I'm going to immerse myself in this for the next few days, and any directions, suggestions, or even music advice you've got, I'll happily accept.

Long story how this all came down, but it should be a blast regardless.

I started doing research yesterday and realized quickly that if I didn't find a way to think outside of the box I was gonna be fucked.

I mean, how am I going to learn how to properly beat match in 7 days? So, that being said I made a few phone calls and found a solution. Pre made mixes. I'm not trying to embarrass myself here. Not only that, but I don't want to steal anyone's money. It needs to be a good show or I need to not do it.

Don't take my comment as a personal shot, it was just me being my normal sarcastic self. pre-made mixes seems like a good idea, just make sure to have some backup mixes if the one you "think" will work doesn't. I'd have to imagine that a company gig would have to be one of the hardest, because the audience can vary so much in age.

Oh, I didn't. Yours and Reapers were the only serious ones that I can see. I appreciate it, because I know NOTHING about this. It's not rocket science though, I'm confident we're gonna do a good job.

I did my consult with the guy today. Ages vary, but largely late 20's to early 40's. He wants a combination of techno/mainstream top 40 hip hop/pop type stuff.

I've got a 3 hour continuous techno/trance mix that is fucking bangin. I also found a 30 minute 1990's throwback mix that I'm going to put in there somewhere. I'm currently looking for some other stuff.

It's kind of corny, but until I get a firm grip of what I'm doing and gauge the reaction of a few crowds, this is the route I'm going. I'll let the professionals handle it, and I'll just play the music.

I'm all about the fun and games, but any serious advice anyone wants to throw down is welcome.

Oh, and Morphius, I'm definitely going to have a wide variety of mixes at my disposal to make sure we keep things moving. If the crowd isn't reacting, I won't hesitate to chuck it and go another direction. At the same point, I don't want to get too crazy. Everything I've read says to stick to 1 style and go with it.

I like it, but it seems like too many varying speeds too quickly. Takes you a minute to get into the grove of a song, and, right when you do, it's changing.

Unfortunately, although it is very cool, it definitely does not work on the dance floor. Like Luv said, there are too many transitions. Girls wind up getting annoyed because they want to dance to a certain part and it all of the sudden changes before they are done with it. As we know, girls pretty much dictate how much fun will be had on the dancefloor.

I've done these types of events (hence, my username)....and trust me, the corporate party stuff is rough..

Your gonna have to feel out the crowd to find out if they're the partying crowd....or the stuffy, just there to drink/socialize crowd.

Unless the company is a bunch of 20-somethings.....dont sway too far from the mainstream, tried and true stuff. (Trust me, I hate that type of music..."Brick House", etc. etc).

But in these types of events....where it's co-workers...a lot of times that makes it even more difficult to get people dancing.

For god's sake.....dont attempt to scratch, etc. unless you're a pro at it......and even then, I probably wouldnt do it unless, again, the crowd is in their 20's or early 30's.

Think content over skills on this one.

We had one of our good friends DJ our wedding (and he's a badass... DJs raves and such... but also plays instruments and has eclectic tastes). Anyway, the crowd was completely pissed because all they wanted to hear was "Shout!" and Brick House and crap like that. They ended up going to their cars and bringing him CDs to play.

Here's his mysapce page. He wasn't spinning trance at the wedding, though.

This TIMES A HUNDRED!!!

Your friend's profile is almost exactly the same as mine. In my younger years, I'd be hard-headed and try to play what I liked...

But - you must remember, you're getting paid to play what the crowd wants, not what you want.

And you asked earlier about beat-matching.

Absolutely not necessary for an event like this.

As I mentioned before....if the crowd is a bunch of 20 somethings who will appreciate the beat-mixing, cutting-edge stuff....go for it...otherwise, leave that stuff at home for your event.

I've done raves, clubs, corporate events, etc......what people ultimately remember from any night out......the music!

You definitely dont want them remembering you because you wouldnt play songs they knew...or even worse, you were attempting to scratch/beat-mix like your only experience with it came from the game DJ Hero! :)

Heavy dancing music = substances = fun for a lot of people... Aside from the dude who gets hopped up enough to pork a porker.

Okay. Company party, people mostly in their late 20's to early 40's. They want dance music, but that's really all they gave me. I decided to keep this real mainstream, and real poppy. Let's face it, this is probably going to be a fairly tough crowd. They work together. Hopefully they'll get drunk early but I have talked to a resident DJ on CP and he gave me some tips how to start this off.

Here's a preliminary set list that will definitely be tweaked and played with as I get a chance to gauge crowd reactions. I know it's not awesome, but try to imagine the situation, tell me if I'm way off anywhere. I'm a first timer here, go easy. What am I missing that's going to get me hung? :D TIA for the feedback.

Are you going to be playing this off of CDs or from a laptop? It's easier to beat match and mix songs on the laptop because you can do it on the spot instead of doing it while making the cd.

It'll be off my laptop. I have 2 of them that I'm taking and plan on plugging them both into my pa.

I'm thinking that if you keep the late 20's group happy, everyone will be happy. Just because the early 40's guys, dancing or not, will enjoy watching the late 20's girls dance to their music.

Hmm... I'll take the other DJ's word on that playlist. The problem you have is with the older folk at this soiree, I have no idea what type of stuff they'd like to jam to.

Fuck it, I wouldn't know what the younger folks would want either. All I know is that to my demographic there are two types of music:

1) Shit you drunkenly sing in unison to (Friends in Low Places, I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing, et c)

2) Shit that makes the ladies want to dance and be receptive to you grinding your junk into her ass (or spine, if there is a height disparity).

But you'll be fine, as I imagine this sounds like a cocktail party more than a dance party.

I would replace one of the sets that looks to be geared toward a 14 year old girl with some Old R&B/doowap/surf music... just this week here in Austin, I watched a DJ play a mix of upbeat dance stuff from the 50s/60s and within a few seconds the dance floor was full of girls in their early 20s.

(oh and you gotta sneak Surfin Bird in there somehow...)

So too much new stuff? I'm assuming you're talking about the poppy stuff like Lady Gaga and so forth. I was wondering if it was a little overkill on that. But you did nail it. I need to get the girls out there to get it going. I'll take a look at it and see if I can make some adjustments. I actually had orginally had an 80's MJ/Prince like set that I took out because I figured I didn't have enough of the new stuff. Thanks for the input.

The reason I suggest the 50s/60s set is that you can make a list of songs that EVERYONE recognizes... even if they don't know the name of the song or the artist... alot of those songs have been so ingrained into pop culture in movies, commercials etc etc... prime example.. Surfin Bird's revival via The Family Guy... :D

Out of all the ones that bdeg suggested that you dump. That one and YMCA are the two I wouldn't dump. IMO, popular/well-known is better in this case even if it's not that cool on ChiefsPlanet.

Thanks brah! It'll be cool, I'm spending the necessary time to make sure I have everything together.

I've got my hands on some dj mixing software, so after playing with it I'm completely scrapping that set list. Some of it just absolutely did not go together.

Here's part of my mainstream set list that I've just put together. It flows much more nicely. Tell me what you all think. And thank you guys again for all the input. I sincerely appreciate it.

Epic. Fucking. Fail.

My setlist got thrown out the window early on. No one was there at 7pm. I was set to start playing at 7:30 and we have about 7 people there. They were all over 50. Disco, new music, 80's music, nothing worked. No one would dance. So they pretty much demand I play Disco and disco only.

K. I don't even have 3 and a half hours worth of disco, but we can rock that if you want. Finally, about 40 minutes into it these two little hotties come up and ask me if I think everyone there is over 50. I briefly explain, but it's cool, I'll change it up to some current stuff.

Then nobody dances anyways. It's past 9:00 pushing 9:30 and I'm miserable. I don't even know what to do at this point. The set list has been scrapped, and I'm scrambling trying to figure out how to inspire these guys.

So I pull out the big guns. The Kesha song, Promiscuous, Single Ladies, Disturbia, and Sexy Back. Now what? I played "Circus" by Britney and the dance floor goes almost dead. There's a couple of Britney fans in the house but that's it.

Good time to switch up and go to a new genre. I play C&C Music Factory "Gonna Make You Sweat". Yeah, no. And now I'm dumbfounded. I've never been anywhere, anytime and witnessed that. That shook me up a bit, because they were so picky I've already dropped my best shit trying to inspire some movement.

It was literally hit and miss the rest of the night. They'd come out, they'd dance for a song or two or three, and then I'd play something completely logical (in my mind anyways, obviously not) and the dance floor would just go ghost town.

Live and learn, but this was a pretty terrible night. Oh well. Better luck next time.

Ouch, man. That sounds like a painful experience. I don't know if I could DJ for a crowd like that. I often handle DJ duty when we're just hanging with friends (because I'm probably the most into music of anyone), and I get pretty self conscious about what's playing and second guess myself constantly. I can only imagine what it would be like with a crowd full of strangers.

I appreciate the support fellas. But honestly, it's on me to get in tune with them and I didn't do it. Frankly, I didn't have enough music. I won't go to one of these without about 10,000 songs at my disposal the next time.

It's all good, I knew that the corporate party scene was going to be a tough one. I'm positively gonna keep with it provided I get booked for stuff. I'm looking at a 16 year old party next month I'm trying to land. I know I can nail that one.

Live and learn. Thanks again to everyone for the kind words. I'm a perfectionist and I was bumming hard core last night. I'm over it though. Move on and make it better next time.

I didn't. They were requesting songs, and I was telling them I would play it if they promised to dance. It was pretty brutal, but it could've been much worse. We did have about 25 people dancing for certain song sets.

If you're ever in that situation again, just ask yourself "What would Reaper play next?" The answer is this....

I played it. I wasn't going to play it, but I was getting desperate and that's the kind of stuff they were dancing too. They ate it up, and danced to it. I couldn't believe it.

I'll say one thing though. I'm so out of touch with that kind of music that it played a part of some of my problems. I'm gonna hit some clubs and bars that have dj's over the next few weeks and get back in touch. I've got a great source that is getting me jobs lined up for these gigs even though I never, ever planned on it.
