I don't know how well you will receive this, but my absolute favorite easy-listening lately has been the Alex Skolnick Trio. They are a Jazz/Heavy Metal fusion band. Much of their music are basically covers of great metal songs, but they make them their own. Most people will probably hate it, but maybe you might like it.

When I watched the film 'The Story of Anvil' and how their career resembled a real life Spinal Tap, I was most impressed by the other music in the film. When the credits rolled his name was David Norland, he apparently does a lot of music for commercials as well. At his website http://www.davidnorland.com/ you can listen to several songs, click on audio, the song "Shibuya" was the one in the film that stood out to me.

Last week when watching the movie '500 Days of Summer' a song caught my ear, which again I researched and found it was by a band called Temper Trap. Here is their video for that song, I don't know anymore about them.

However, first here is an old standby of mine, the late Michael Hedges. This is him at Wolftrap in 1986 doing 'All Along the watchtower'. He's probably more well known for his cover of Sheila E's 'Love Bizarre', they're both great.

Its definitely something you're familiar with, but the best chill out music ever created is Bob Marley.

I also like A Tribe Called Quest at low volumes, but I listen to energetic music so they're very chill to me.

Down tempo/Lounge:
Thievery Corporation - "The Mirror Conspiracy"
Kruder & Dorfmeister - "The K&D Sessions"

Shoegaze:
Flunk - "Morning Star" (Great cover of New Order's "Blue Monday" on this album.)
Zero 7 - "Simple Things"

Ambient:
Air - "Moon Safari"
Sleepthief - "The Dawnseeker"

Trip-hop:
Massive Attack vs. The Mad Professor - "No Protection"
Morcheeba - "Parts of the Process" (Best Sunday Morning album ever.)

Just some great mellow music:
Michael Franti - "Songs from the Front Porch" (If you don't own this album, you absolutely, unequivocally FAIL at Music Appreciation 101.)
Jack Johnson - "In Between Dreams"

Since you mentioned bands like Explosions in the Sky and the like, you also should check out the new release by The **** Buttons - "Tarot Sport." It's like a trippy, downtempo Mogwai album. Actually, it's probably right up your alley in terms of what you are looking for.

However, I've saved the best for last, and this should be the one album you are looking for:

Burial - "Untrue"
- A grey skied walk on the beach in November, where your mind fights the juxtapositions of love and hate while the monotony of the waves surround you. It's a great album.

Flunk - "Morning Star" (Great cover of New Order's "Blue Monday" on this album.)

I was checking these out on Amazon and apparently, the New Order cover on "Morning Star" is "True Faith". "Blue Monday" was on a previous Flunk CD called "For Sleepyheads Only".

Can't go wrong with Thievery and Morcheeba.

Another oldie but goodie I'd throw in is St. Germain. I think I listened to the album "Tourist" every all nighter I pulled in high school.

anything from Iron & Wine is pretty relaxing...try his latest album "The Shepherd's Dog" or songs like "The Trapeze Swinger," "No Moon," or "Freedom Hangs Like Heaven"

Yep. Got my two Flunk albums mixed up. Morning Star is the better album, but Blue Monday from Sleepyheads is the better cover.

Initially, I thought about including it, but I felt that there was a little too much up-tempo bossanova/samba influence on that record for me to consider it chill, but it's a great album nonetheless.
