View Full Version : Misc The UPS Ad Guy

I don't know much about the advertising world, so I'm kind of flailing around here. However, every time I see that f*cking smarmy, long-haired coquette-like turd and his f*cking cutsey whiteboard and marker, I want to burn humanity for continuing to allow this piece of flotsam to STILL be on TV. I can understand a few commercials and then some advertising genius goes, "Wow, these ads are really annoying and we're driving customers to FedEx in droves!"

Or, am I wrong? Do people actually like these ads? This f*ck actually increases UPS' sales?

I think I read somewhere that he worked for UPS and when they were testing the commercial idea, they brought in a bunch of actors to do the whiteboard stuff, and he would explain it to the test audiences and demonstrate, and the test audiences always responded better to him than the actors, so they decided to just let him do it.

Subway and freecreditreport.com... it boggles my mind (or bottles, whatever), not just that there are successful people behind the commercials and successful people who sell the air time, but that they have yet to be crucified upside down on fiery AIDS crosses during halftime of a Super Bowl (f*** The Who), and the commercials are still on the air. I haven't been to a Subway in years and I change the channel every time I see one of those commercials... take that, Whitey.

U being serious? What's so great about drawing on a whiteboard? At least from a marketing standpoint?

Keeps it simple....does a great job of conveying ideas that would be difficult to convey another way in the short amount of time.

It also gives you the "why" factor.

Way back in the day I had a knack for selling TVs when I worked at Office Depot. Unless the customer expressly was interested I did not get too caught up in tech details and specs. I painted a picture of the customer enjoying the TV in their house...watching the game...family around. Things like that.

UPS has done a good job of painting real pictures of their value, bringing up services a business owner might of never knew they had.

There was a story on Dateline or 60 Minutes about a year ago in reference to this up and coming AD agency in Richmond, VA. How the big firms in NY were losing accounts to this company, I remember UPS and GEICO were a couple of their clients.

They mentioned with GEICO they were using three different angles, which was unusual. The cave men, the celebrity spokesman and the Gecko lizard. With UPS, the guy you see with the long hair is actually the guy at the AD agency who came up with that pitch. He was demonstrating the AD for UPS and they liked it, and said can you be the guy in the commercial. So he is the guy responsible for creating the AD and works in front of the cameras as well.
