correction, its tied 4-4.

I kinda like the end of the 5th end, 2 rocks left when I turned it on, USA was up 4-1 but Japan had 5 rocks in scoring position, I was thinking "holy crap, how did they screw it up so bad!"

Apparently they thought the same thing, called one of their 2 1-minute time outs, the USA coach came down and told them what to do (limit the damage, they can cut three of Japan's stones off from scoring position). Placed it perfectly, Japan couldnt even knock it out, so they had to settle with just tossing one more into scoring position to score 3 instead of 5.

6th end, USA has 2 in scoring position, 4 rocks left

2 rocks left, USA has the hammer and still has 2 in scoring position

interesting, USA has an easy 2, but is going for a risky shot to get 3

7th end, 6 rocks left, Japan +1

4 rocks left, Japan +1

bad shot for USA, good shot for Japan. 2 rocks left, Japan +3

Japan scores 3. End of the 7th end, Japan 7-6, USA has the hammer in the 8th end.

And thanks to NBC's great coverage, you just posted a spoiler.

It boggles my mind that sports can even have 'spoilers' in this day and age... It's a sporting event, not the end of 'Empire Strikes Back'. Come on NBC, get it together and give it to ABC.

8th end

6 rocks left, USA +1

4 rocks left, USA +1

USA doesnt seem to be playing this end very well

This could be a disaster. USA is putting themselves in a position where they might have to make a tough shot to score 1, or if they miss Japan could score without the hammer.

2 rocks left, USA +1

USA is forced to settle for 1 point, tied 7-7, Japan has the hammer in the 9th end.

beginning of the 9th end, tied 7-7, Japan with the hammer

8 rocks left, Japan +2

6 rocks left, Japan +2

horrible shot from USA, 5 rocks left, Japan +2, Japan calls timeout

4 rocks left, Japan +2, Japan had a chance to really put USA in big trouble, but missed

awesome shot from USA, 2 rocks left, Japan only +1

Japan scores 1 in the 9th, Japan 8-7, USA has the hammer in the 10th end

10th end, Japan 8-7, USA has the hammer. Need 1 point to tie, 2 for the win

12 rocks left, USA +2

10 rocks left, USA +2

Terrible shot for USA

8 rocks left, Japan +2

6 rocks left, Japan +2

4 rocks left, Japan +2

3 rocks left, Japan +3, USA is in HUGE trouble and will struggle to tie

Good shot from USA, but not good enough yet

2 rocks left, Japan +1

1 rock left, Japan +1, USA has to get their point now or they lose. They have a very tough shot to get it.

CLOSE, they have to bring in the measuring device, either its a tie or Japan won

sadly, this is one of the strongest years for men's figure skating in USA history. We are favored to get 2 medals.

Oh, and ice dancing too, I guess we have two strong teams there too, but its hard to call ice dancing a sport. At least with pairs its difficult and you got throws and jumps and stuff.

There's a difference between ice dancing and figure skating?

in ice dancing, the couple is touching throughout. That means no throws, no jumps, no real chance to fall. Its mostly all "artistic", which means the couple that has the hottest groping makeout session to arouse the judges wins. If they really want to win, they should go out there naked.

correction: they can now briefly seperate, but must remain within 2 arm-lengths at all times. jumps (except "half jumps", whatever that is) and throws are forbidden.

10th end, USA leads 5-4, Norway with the hammer, Norway needs 1 to tie or 2 to win

Bad shots by Norway

12 rocks left, USA +1

Norway really needs to end it with 2 points here. If they get 1 and send it tied to an 11th end, USA will have the hammer

10 rocks left, Norway +1

USA has a great defensive setup

9 rocks left, USA +2

8 rocks left, USA +1 or Norway +1, I cant tell

6 rocks left, Norway +1

Crowd is clearly against USA, chanting "Lets go Norway"

No idea what the hell Norway is trying to do, that looked like a wasted throw

4 rocks left, USA +1

3 rocks left, USA +2

I think Norway is screwed. They will have to make some great shots just to keep the USA from scoring, and if they only score 1 point they will probably lose anyway without the hammer

2 rocks left, USA +1

1 rock left, USA +1

USA played it safe by removing any chance at all of Norway winning. Now Norway has to make a shot to tie

Norway scores 1 point, end of regulation, tied 5-5, USA will have the hammer for the rest of the game

10 rocks left, Norway +3

Norway is trying to set up a wall to steal a point for the win

8 rocks left, Norway +3, USA fails to clear anything out

6 rocks left, Norway +2

Norway is trying hard to hang on to their scoring position

4 rocks left, Norway +2

If USA chokes despite having the hammer, that will be sad

Norway calls their last timeout to look it over

3 rocks left, Norway +3 but the middle is still open

USA calls their last time out

2 rocks left, Norway +1

USA has left Norway with a very tough shot to defend their point. I dont see an easy way for them to keep USA from scoring

last rock of the game, Norway +1, they did a good job of making this difficult for USA, USA wins or loses on this shot

Here are some assorted comments from USA curling fans on another message board regarding the USA curling team's leader:

F*** YOU SHUSTER

Get the f*** off this team Shuster.

Shuster commits Seppuku tonight, under/over?

Damnit Shuster

F***ing god are you kidding me? Let your sweepers win it jesus shuster.

He sure f***ed that one up.

so john shuster is pretty much the worst curler at the olympics. did he get his invitation from the bottom of one of the many boxes of sugar smacks he consumes per day? beat it, tubby, you ruined the olympics.

I'm already penciling in a loss to Canada, so they have to rattle off all the rest wins besides that and hope 6-3 is enough for the top 4. They should honestly be 2-0 with Canada.

alnorth
02-16-2010, 11:43 PM
For those wondering about the hate, apparently Shuster has a history of making bad decisions. He is the skip of team USA. In NFL terms, it basically means he is the offensive and defensive coordinator combined. He is the one who analyzes the playing field and decides what shot the team will attempt. While the rock is moving, he decides what the sweepers should be doing, and the other three team members carry out his orders.

On the last shot, all they had to do is gently lay the rock into the middle, his sweepers thought it was good, but he yelled at them to keep sweeping. Turns out the sweepers were right, the rock went too far, and sailed right past Norway's rock out of scoring position.

edit: bonus comment from another board

Brits vs French sounds fun, but I won't get to see it because NBC will be dedicated to showing us how Shuster is failing America.

I am damned disappointed in our Curling team. Damned disappointed.

By the way, I've done some research on the subject and found out some interesting stuff. First off, Curling has become the most watched Olympic sport on television. This was a big surprise to everyone during the Salt Lake games. Also, Curling was invented by the Scots. It seems they would spend hours upon hours shoving large rocks around on the frozen marshes for enjoyment. Sometimes, they would bonk the large rocks into each other, too. If there were any disagreement as to the connection between Curling and Single Malt Whiskey, this ends the argument.

I must admit, curling is a fascinatingly bizarre sport to watch. It's like bocci on ice, mixed in with a little horseshoes and darts.

For those who dislike the Olympics: only in the Olympics can a curling match between Japanese and American women come down to a measurement, and it's actually suspenseful.

As for hockey, as someone (Mike Milbury?) pointed out in the postgame analysis, some of the USA players had literally arrived the day before and the team's had little time to practice, whereas their first-round opponent is the best team in the bracket not named "Canada" and are very familiar with each other.

Now watching the finale of the Westminister dog show on USA, waiting for Olympic coverage to start...

I really like the Curling stuff. And, I'm not kidding about the television ratings, Mr. JD10367. Apparently, it's the most viewed Olympic sport. You can check it out. That's pretty amazing in my book of amazing Olympic sport television viewing statistics of all times.

I think it's because almost anybody could be a Curler. At least the Thrower or Pusher or Slider person (whatever they call it), if not the Sweeper / Janitor person. Young people, old people, slow people, fat people, anybody could be a Curler. That's why so many people watch it. Plus, there's strategy. I didn't expect there would be so much, but there's a ton. On top of that, they take time between lobbing the rocks down the ice to talk to each other and try to figure out where to heave the next rock. That gives the audience time to get to the fridge and back, no problem.

I would very much like to open a chain of Curling Rinks around the US. I think it would make a great sport for people of all ages and mental conditions.

I think that it would be fun to go curling. A date night similar to mini-golf or bowling.

And there'd be some high-beam action. :)

Curling certainly seems to have a lot more interaction and strategy than bocci or horseshoes. Condition of the ice, weight of the rock, how much spin you put on it, how much power you deliver it with, what your sweepers do, what the opposing sweeper does once the rocks collide, etc.,. I bet it's actually pretty interesting to watch in person.

And these German chicks are growing hotter by the minute.

Great high angle of the USA sweeper just now, vigorously scrubbing in front of the enemy rock. Her buttcheeks were bouncing up and down, with the great above-the-circle camera angle. I might need to take a moment here... :D

It doesn't look easy at all. Look at the way they push off from that black thing and glide straight towards the line, keeping themselves on a straight line while thinking of how hard to throw and how much wrist-spin to put on it. It doesn't look easy at all. Look at the way they push off from that black thing and glide straight towards the line, keeping themselves on a straight line while thinking of how hard to throw and how much wrist-spin to put on it. Most of us would probably just fall on our ass trying to push off from the black thing, LOL.
The first time I tried that's exactly what happened.

No disrespect, gentlemen, but Curling is easy as all get out. Heck, the Scots invented the sport by pushing around rocks on their frozen marshes, for crying out loud.

All you do is push your big round thing down the alley thing and try and get it in the bulls-eye thing. That's it. If there's another big round thing in the way, you smack it out of the way. Plus, you get a whole bunch of big round things to try with ... not just one. Piece of pie.

US curling thoroughly getting their shit kicked in right now.

Curling is a lost cause this year.

The women were never favored to contend for medals, so I'm fine with them getting beat and maybe getting practice in for the next four years.

The men had a chance to maybe win a bronze, but they have dug themselves such a big hole against teams they should have beaten, that they have to run the table the rest of pool play (ignoring Canada, we cant beat them) just to make it out of the pool.

I doubt I'll follow another curling match closely unless one of the teams strings enough wins together to maybe have a chance to get out of the pool.

What, you mean they should make this stuff just available online on demand? without excessive commentary? Every moment of it?... like they did in Beijing?!? Insane!

If they did that, then rather than sit back on the comfortable couch with a beer to enjoy the olympics coverage in glorious HDTV, EVERYONE in America would clearly choose instead to sit at their computer chair and watch the footage in their computer monitor.

Then you will not watch the advertisements from the hardworking sponsers who make this all possible in exchange for the opportunity to humbly pitch you their product.

We cant have that, so we have to shut down the internet for a day. Except sports no one in the USA cares about like curling and hockey. Whats that you say? You'd like to watch all the competition for any sports from beginning to end, including all training and qualification runs from every foreign athlete? What, are you stupid? Everyone in this country only cares about their athletes and the few most powerful evil outsiders who may steal the medal away, and even then only a few clips of action sandwiched between montages with announcers yammering on and on drowning out the sounds and conversations that might be going on at the event.

Why is Stephen Colbert on the Olympics?

My memory is that he gave the US Speedskating team a ton of money; he essentially kept the team solvent.

In so doing, he was made an honorary member of the team and has some kind of financial interest in it as well.

alnorth
02-17-2010, 10:46 PM
Why is Stephen Colbert on the Olympics?

Its a really cool and long story. Around October or so, he wanted to start doing bits on the coming olympics for the Colbert Report show on Comedy Central, and they were trying to brainstorm a way to figure out how to work it in so early months in advance.

Meanwhile, a huge mega-bank in Europe, which was the big sponser of USA speedskating, suddenly had an old-fashion run on the bank, went bankrupt, and could not make a $300,000 sponsership payment that was due to USA speedskating. 3 months before the olympics, too soon to find another sponser, left high and dry, seemingly totally screwed. The USOC was scrambling to try to make up the shortfall to make sure the team made it to Vancouver, but some corners would have to be cut, maybe another sport which would have otherwise gotten aid would suffer.

Colbert, who for some odd reason just happened to always love speedskating, saw the story and jumped all over it. The Colbert Report called USA Speedskating and offered, not a guarantee, but their best effort to get the Colbert nation (the fans of the show) to donate. The head of USA speedskating went on the show and they actually signed an official sponsership agreement on the air. The old bank patches were removed from the uniforms, replaced by these big goofy-looking "Colbert Nation" patches on the speedskating helmets and legs. (only in world cup events, the olympics doesnt allow these sponsership decals).

In 4 days, fans of the show donated $75,000. They started selling these red Colbert Nation caps with the USA speedskating logo on the back, with 70% of all proceeds going to USA speedskating. (I bought one, I have the red Colbert Nation/Speedskating cap on the desk now) In about 2 weeks, the fans of the show raised $300,000. By the start of the olympics, they raised over $350,000, more than the speedskaters lost from their bankrupt sponser. (They now need to find a new permanent sponser, this is just a one-year gag/band-aid/bailout to get them through the olympics)

Colbert took advantage of the whole incredible situation with all these hilarious bits of him "trying out" for various olympic teams. The USOC was obviously grateful enough to play along as he tried luge, bobsled, curling, and finally tried to race Shani Davis with a massive head-start 90% of the way to the finish line. (he still got smoked by Davis)

Sports Illustrated liked the whole amazing story so much, they put him on the cover of SI in one of their olympic preview issues. The speedskating team officially makes him a member of the team as the assistant sports psychologist. Now he basically can go to the olympics and obviously wants to film for his show, but there's a problem: NBC has exclusive rights.

NBC obviously cant say no to Colbert after all this, they would look like total bastards. So, Ebersol went on the Colbert Report, gave him an NBC sweater-vest, and invited him to film speed-skating for a week for his show in Vancouver, if he would agree to an interview with Costas (which we just saw)

The End.

WoodDraw
02-17-2010, 10:52 PM
I think I read that the biggest sponsorship offered before him was for less than $100,000 dollars. So that extra publicity turned into quite a windfall for the sport. Cool story, for sure.

But how valuable is it to you for me to just rail endlessly on a network that nobody likes anyway? Very little. But when speed skater Sven Kramer of the Nederlands does it, itís awesome, as evidenced when he was asked for his name and nationality right after he won a fugging gold medal.

Watching more women's downhill, nice and sunny so I assume this is all tape-delay from earlier but luckily I'm apparently the only one in this thread so no one has said how it turns out. Vonn just had her run, it's amazing how effortless she makes it look even with the bad ankle. She's a decent-sized girl and apparently uses larger skis which help. The U.S. chick who finished second to her yesterday was in the lead until Vonn skiied... that must be disheartening, always being second-fiddle even when Vonn has a bum ankle.

Watching the German chick now, it's funny how hard they all make it look compared to Vonn. Their skis chatter, their legs bounce up and down...

Shaun White is just so damn likeable.

He somehow manages to keep that quirky charm while still coming across as thoughtful, intelligent and articulate.

Vonn strikes me as someone that might be a bit cosmopolitan and aloof. It seems like her teammates give her the appropriate amount of polite exuberance, but it doesn't seem like they really like her. Vonn hangs out with the German chick the whole time in what looks a kinda cliquish little group.

Mancuso is the opposite. It seems like her teammates really pull for her, she seems like she's more incorporated with the group.

And of course I could be absolutely wrong, just an observation.

It's quite surprising, Mr. FAX. Several people have talked to me about curling, and I had no idea I had friends who care about, talk about, and are willing to admit they have watched this activity.

Did you know there's a huge day of hockey on Sunday involving the top 6 teams in the world, which are competing for 4 automatic slots into the quarterfinals? Actually, they've been playing all week. People in Canada care, because they haven't won a gold medal in like 100 years. Well, Team USA hasn't won one in 30 years, not since the Miracle on Ice; they have a young and exciting team this year.

I believe you know all of this, as for some reason I seem to remember you talking about hockey at one time or another, but while the best athletes in the world are on the ice -- with sticks and not brooms -- a lot of people seem to care more about an activity that you can find 80yo women playing in Florida (sans ice).

Then again, Mr. FAX, this is the same country that would rather watch golf or poker, so curling could very well be the next big thing in primetime.

I've always liked hockey, but really started to get into it after Nashville was awarded the Predator franchise. I have to say, though, that I don't enjoy hockey on television much ... I do, however, really like watching it live.

Curling, however, is a great television sport. (Did I mention that Curling is the most watched Olympic sport on TV?) It has all the elements of strategy, sweeping, rock bonking, and other stuff and things that make it fun and exciting to watch. Plus, anybody can be a Curler. Anyone of any race, age, size or religious affiliation can Curl if they want as long as they have access to a big rock and some ice someplace and a broom or two.

Yep. Curling is on the upswing. In fact, it's only been an official Olympic sport for about 10 years, or so. Before that, it was an exhibition sport or something similar. Personally, I think that Curling will soon become as popular in the US as wrestling or sculling or cat flinging. What we really need is a National Curling League so we can start developing the skills of our young, college Curlers by rewarding them with big Curling contracts as professionals.
