In the heat of battle, I think the skater probably just panicked a little. The coach was yelling at him and given the situation, the fatigue, and the nerves, he just reacted without thinking. I don't blame him really, but it is strange that he's famous for being an awesome, experienced, world-class skater and, for whatever reason, he simply doesn't skate the lanes correctly in the biggest race of his life. Weird.

And then didn't take any responsibility for the mistake. I don't have much sympathy for him.

Ultimately, the athlete is the one that should be keeping track of that in his own mind. It's his responsibility. The best in the world shouldn't make a mistake like this, no matter how egregious the coach's error was.

I disagree. The coach is standing there doing nothing but making sure you go to the right lane. Thats his only job, not really anything else. If you and he disagree, you have to assume that it is YOU who is wrong and trust the coach, because you were busy skating the last 30-40 seconds, the coach has presumably been standing there doing nothing, focused only on your next lane.

I frankly dont think he has much, if any responsibility.

Rule #1 in all sports: do what your coach says. If you dont like it you can fire the coach or go to another team after the game.

I'd say Rule #1 as an athlete is trust your own judgement and abilities. If he actually believed the outside was the right lane, he wouldn't have gone left, no matter what the coach said.

Tough luck, Sven. Maybe American reporters will know your name 4 years from now for a different reason.

All of those are good matchups, I think. Obviously the one you highlighted is the premier one, but each is interesting in it's own way. I watched the Slovakian team last night. They have some skilled players and some fast skaters. It'll be interesting to see them against the Swedes. If the Swedes take stupid penalties like they did in the opening round it could be a tight game.

They are very active witht their sticks in the defensive zone.

Guys are keeping the sticks along the ice and ticking away passes, shots, etc... at an incredible clip.

It's been a very fundamentally sound defensive effort from the d-corps, but I'd like to see the forwards back-check a little bit harder. They did a much better job of it this time than I've seen so far, but they need to keep it up.

I heard Russia was complaining about the new format and having to play Canada in the quarters... which I guess they can gripe a little, since they were in the toughest group in the prelims... they can cry some more about it or man up for the rest of the game.

I think the DQ was justified. People always look at the arms and upper-body, but I dont think thats what the judges saw.

The Korean girl's skate jammed right into the Chinese girl's skate, almost took her foot right out from under her. China was lucky that she merely lost speed and kept her feet. Without that skate-blade-bump, it would have been a close finish.

I imagine that weight has a lot to do with world-class super sliding, Mr. the Talking Can. That's probably why all the top super sliders have small tittahs ... to cut down on weight. Plus, they don't have to worry about their big tittahs getting caught on their super slider while ejecting. Then, there's always the problem of bouncing. Bouncing is certain to cut down on their relative velocity causing inertia that is inversely proportional to speed versus distance.

FAX

No-touch icing in international hockey; as soon as the puck crosses the goal line the play stops. Short-handed teams can ice the puck freely. If the official judges a player is not making an effort to play the puck, he can waive the icing. Oh, and no line changes, like the NHL does.

I watched the entire thing. It's difficult, to be sure, and you have to use little tricks to get you through it. For example, I've discovered that, if you imagine what they would look like if they weren't wearing clothes, it's a whole lot easier. When you do that, you realize that trapping the puck betwixt the bare tittahs would make for a very effective defensive play.

After Canadian Gold, Beer and Cigars on the Ice

Women's hockey team celebration raises eyebrows at the IOC, which said it would look into the matter. Informed of the antics, the executive director of the Olympic Games said it was "not what we want to see."

<IFRAME id=ifr-frame1-300x250_336x280 border=0 frameBorder=0 width=1 scrolling=no height=1></IFRAME>

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- The women of the Canadian hockey team politely accepted their gold medals and waved to an adoring crowd. And then the real celebration began.

More than half an hour after they beat the United States 2-0 on Thursday, the players came back from the locker room and staged a party on ice -- swigging from bottles of champagne, guzzling beer and smoking cigars.

In a sport that Canada invented, there was never an option besides gold, and with it finally in hand, the home team let loose.

Meghan Agosta and Marie-Philip Poulin posed wearing goofy grins. Rebecca Johnston actually tried to drive the ice-resurfacing machine. Haley Irwin poured champagne into the mouth of Tessa Bonhomme, gold medals swinging from both their necks.

The celebration raised eyebrows at the IOC, which said it would look into the matter. Informed of the antics by The Associated Press, Gilbert Felli, the IOC's executive director of the Olympic Games, said it was "not what we want to see."

"I don't think it's a good promotion of sport values," he said. "If they celebrate in the changing room, that's one thing, but not in public. We will investigate what happened."

Poulin, who scored both goals, doesn't turn 19 -- legal drinking age in British Columbia -- until next month. The drinking age in Alberta, where the Canadian team trains, is 18. Photos showed Poulin on the ice with a beer in her hand.

"We understand that they were asked to go back onto the playing field after the stadium had emptied to take a photo," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said. "We understand that some people may have felt that their behavior was over-exuberant."

Steve Keough, a spokesman for the Canadian Olympic Committee, said the COC had not provided the alcohol nor initiated the party.

"In terms of the actual celebration, it's not exactly something uncommon in Canada," he said.

While the committee does not condone irresponsibility, Keough said, "I think Canadians understand it's quite an emotional moment for our team. It was not our intention to go against any IOC protocols."

Not even uncommon at these Olympics. After Jon Montgomery won a gold medal for Canada in skeleton, he walked through the streets of Whistler guzzling from a pitcher of beer that he gripped with two hands.

American Scotty Lago, who won a bronze in halfpipe, voluntarily left the games after a photo surfaced of a woman kneeling below his waist to kiss the medal.

******

LOL, let them celebrate. It's their country and they won.

I agree, I was glad she got a bronze too.

And I'd also happily give her a consolation :hump: if she'd like. Nothing better than seeing a woman on the ice you can ogle and not feel like you need to be on a predator watch list. (She's 24, IIRC, compared to the usual pedophilia-like 16 or 17 they all seem to be...)

Overall, I give NBC's coverage a D-minus. Their whole approach to delivering Olympics programming is like watching an episode of "Oprah On Ice". Saccharine sweet, warm and fuzzy backgrounders interspersed with actual events with very little useful information about the sport and/or any non-American participants. Not only that, but the timing of the broadcasts has sucked, in my opinion. Some of the best events have been delivered on tape for no reason I can see. I mean, they have half a dozen channels they can use to broadcast live events.

Who's running NBC Sports now and why did they hire a first class doofus to head up the division?

I'm just not a big fan of the presentation and the information presented. After a run and someone makes the leader board let us know how many others skiers, sleds, or whatever are left, have a running graphic of this at the top. During speed skating and other such events keep a running tracker of what lap they are on and how many are left rather than flashing it for 2 seconds once every time around. During the biathlon show us the awesome camera angle you have of the actual targets so we can see where and when the bullets hit rather than the weak little circles on the side of the screen.

Give me the information so I can understand the sports going on! We don't watch these sports all the time, hold our hand through this, not to mention in this day and age people expect and want as much info as possible.

someone noticed a bit of gamesmanship that failed in Ohno's race. When that South Korean went down he knew he was toast, but it looked like he was reaching up to try to take down Ohno too. Ohno obviously would have been advanced anyway, but it would have allowed the other south korean to advance too with a 2nd-place finish if the first one would have taken him out.

Dang. It seems like I have a million questions and more are coming all the time. Here's another one ...

In the hockey game, the Canadian dudes are playing guys in blue uniforms. The blue uniform goalie has a picture of a guy on his helmet. Anybody know who the person is in the helmet picture? Seems like an odd thing to have on your goalie hat.

Dang. That was one heck of a goal. The Canadian guy just barely touched the puck and redirected it just enough. I don't see how he could have done that on purpose, but the commentators are saying he did. Dang.

Because, you know, I'm smart and all:

Vladimir Dzurilla - played for Czechoslovakia in the 1968, 1972, and 1976 Winter Olympics and the 1976 Canada Cup. He led Czechoslovakia to the 1976 and 1977 World Titles over the Soviet Union.

Dang. I was wondering if it wasn't Vladimir. It kinda looked like him, but I wasn't sure.

If he's lost a step, I can't tell. He's making all these crazy passes that you rarely see from any of the others.

Well, maybe he's using his lost step to leap over the crazy circle skaters who are falling down all over the place. Personally, I don't see how you can maintain your focus - let alone your momentum - with circle skaters falling and floundering and flipping and flopping and flapping on the ice right in front of you.

Haha, I'd like to see him try French where I lived. People would give him the WTF look.

Dang. Trotting out that poor girl like that. NBC is a bunch of douche bags, in my opinion.

I guess she didn't have to appear, but maybe she felt like she had to. I'm telling you, this is like a friggin' Oprah episode with sporting event interludes. Rot in Hell, NBC. Rot and burn and suffer and weep, you bastards.

no, I think he's saving himself. They have the final of the relay in less than an hour. Ohno will be tiring himself out trying to win the gold in the 500m.

I think Korea wins an easy gold in the relay, USA will be skating for silver.

That guy fell when he touched him, I guess that's smart if you're trying to bait a DQ.

The other day that guy pretty much grabbed Ohno's ass.

How does the Korean going down have anything to do with Ohno? That guy fell on his own.

I think that korean just went down on his own. The canadian didnt touch him at all when he fell.

No controversy at all, that was an easy DQ. Maybe it was ticky-tack but you dont have to touch someone, if you do you take a huge risk if they just happen to fall on their own, it looks like a push.

True...I thought he was part of the mayhem caused by Tremblay's fall. Either way...I'm sure they'll blame him for this one.

awesome, they wont even show the race, which is a whole hell of a lot more exciting than this crap, on a slight delay. They had this whole skiing production planned out, and they arent letting ANY new development get in the way. Reutter's silver will get banished to the night coverage.

Wang will be a year older than Ohno, then. And he's pretty old for the sport. So maybe she'll be gone.
