View Full Version : Music Am I the only one who confused Cheap Trick and Supertramp?

Until recently, I don't think I realized they weren't the same band. I guess their names seemed vaguely similar enough to each other and while I liked a few of their hits (quite a few when you put them together) they were never bands that I paid close of attention to.

So I guess I just attributed "Bloody Well Right" and Dreamer to "that band that has the goofy guy with the double guitar and the singer with the long blond hair... you know the one, right? "I want you to want me..." those guys?

Depending on how likely it was to rain on any given day in the last 20 years, I would have told you their name was "Cheap Trick"... or "Supertramp".

I was just googling Supertramp and realized all of this.

Am I the only one who confused the two?

It's one of those "I never saw them in the same place at the same time" kinda things. It just never occured to me that they might not be the same band. Supertramp is probably the better band (mostly because I dont' recall them having that horrible 80's pop-rock period, I guess), but I couldn't have ever told you what they looked like or what any of the members names were.

I guess they both just came across to me as relatively unidentified generic 70's supergroup bands but I knew Robin Zander was the singer and that guy with the checkerboard ties was the guitarist.

Well, if you mix their names, you come up with some interesting band names like:

Cheap Tramp and Super Trick.

That was me. Coincidentaly enough, it just happened a few hours ago. In the "tastier rock" thread

someone posted a supertramp video. In my mind I was expecting to hear Cheap trick. Weird.

LMAO

I can see how you can get them confused because the horn section on Bob's song does sound like ELO's music.

How can you confuse an British band whose singer exclusively sang in falsetto, with a rock quartet from Chicago that all but dominated the airwaves in the late 70's and early 80's?

Did you confuse KISS with Poison as well?

Cheap Trick was a frequent guest on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert as well. That was a GREAT show.

Too bad it wouldn't fly today because no one can sing or play anymore...

When ever I hear Supertramp on the radio I change the channel within the first 3 seconds. The falsetto vocals and the gay bass lines are enough to drive me mad.
Cheap Trick is borderline manly good.
IMO - Supertramp = ABBA w/o the chicks

The Knack, on the other hand, did always remind me of Cheap Trick, and vice versa. They both had a pop sound and their biggest hits were in 1979.

'The Knack' Lead Singer Dies
Group Sang 1979 Hit 'My Sharona'

AP Photo
Doug Fieger, leader of the power pop band The Knack who sang on the 1979 hit "My Sharona," died Sunday. He was 57.

Fieger, a Detroit-area native, died at his home in Woodland Hills near Los Angeles after battling cancer, according to The Knack's manager, Jake Hooker.

Fieger formed The Knack in Los Angeles 1978, and the group quickly became a staple of Sunset Strip rock clubs. A year later he co-wrote and sang lead vocals on "My Sharona."

Fieger said the song, with its pounding drums and exuberant vocals, was inspired by a girlfriend of four years.

"I had never met a girl like her -- ever," he told The Associated Press in a 1994 interview. "She induced madness. She was a very powerful presence. She had an insouciance that wouldn't quit. She was very self-assured. ... She also had an overpowering scent, and it drove me crazy."

"My Sharona," an unapologetically anthemic rock song, emerged during disco's heyday and held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard pop chart for six weeks, becoming an FM radio standard.

It became a pop culture phenomenon, parodied by Weird Al Yankovic and others and sampled by rap group Run DMC.

In 1994, "My Sharona" re-entered the Billboard chart when it was released as a single from the soundtrack of the Ben Stiller film "Reality Bites."

"My Sharona" gained attention again in 2005 when it was reported that George W. Bush had the song on the presidential iPod.

Their songs, about young love and teenage lust, included the hits "Good Girls Don't," ''She's So Selfish" and "Frustrated."

The Knack continued to release albums and tour through the mid-2000s but they never replicated the success they enjoyed with their first two albums, "Get the Knack" and "... But the Little Girls Understand."

Fieger battled cancer for six years. In 2006 he underwent surgery to remove two tumors from his brain.

He is survived by a sister, Beth Falkenstein, and a brother, attorney Geoffrey Fieger of Southfield, Mich., who is best known for representing assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian.

A Los Angeles memorial service for friends and family is being planned.
