Anybody hear, or know anything about the guy dying in the luge this weekend.
I'm sure this is a repost, but I looked a few pages back. I can't get a video anywhere. I'm not a sicko, I'm just curious about this.

Wow. Damn. Ugh.

You would think that they would have those beams covered.
90 mph. BAM!!

I'm about to check, and see what the street luge speeds get up to.

LOL because if he hit a covered beam he'd live? I don't think so. Internal organs are not able to withstand forces like that. The man was going 90 mph.

EDIT: see what MOhillbilly said above.

Dangerous fucking sport. There's a few rough ones here.

looking at the vid, it was probably pretty freak that he dropped out of the corner so fast and hit the inside of the straight-away. That's what bounced him up and out of the track. If the outside wall have extended higher, he still would have probably sustained critical injuries cartwheeling down the track at 90mph.

Wow you're brilliant.

I meant covered as in a wall. As in the wall going all the way up.

He would have had a much higher chance of survival had the wall extended up.
I've been reading about that track, and the lugers(?sp) were absolutely terrified of it. There were many wrecks, and a lot of them came down the track at 90 mph, but he's the only one that died. (because he hit a pole)

No doubt the chances of survival would be greatly increased, but if you noticed, he bounced up and entered what amounted to a flat spin. He would have cartwheeled down the track until he hit the wall or the track. The only thing in the other vid you posted above that is anywhere close was the guy in orange.

Luge crashes can be gnarly, but from what I've seen they rarely get enough air to cartwheel.

Beck did the soundtrack for that video...

"I'm a Luger baby, so why don't you kill me...."

Depends on who you talk to. Others were disappointed that they lowered the starting spot on the track because it made the race way too easy. Some of them basically said "It's a dangerous sport. Stuff happens."

Yeah, one of the trainers (25 years of experience IIRC) said, that if there was a wall, he'd probably get a few broken bones at most and live to tell us about it. Sad. :(

Yeah, but it's not like he was aware of anything. As far as he is concerned, he died as soon as his head hit that pole.

No he was dead when they got to him. But due to legal issues they can't pronounce him dead till the hospital. I know the look of death & he was dead on impact.

Do they always have beams like that for luge events?

I wouldn't even sled down a hill near metal pipes.

Why would they design anything like that?

Because Olympians aren't supposed to be flying off the course. That's what the organizers said, anyway. They still built a wall after it to quell the fears.

Damn. Human body meeting steel posts at 89.6 mph... pretty fucked.

Wouldn't you think they could place semi-cylindrical clear plastic covering over the "danger" areas like that corner so that if somebody does lose control they will at least remain in a much 'safer' situation? It would allow the all important camera angles to remain. Viewers would just have to suffer watching part of the luge through a clear plastic barrier.

Disney does that too, so they can officially say they didn't have a death in the park.
