OMFG, Natalie Zea* as a redneck woman. No chance in HELL I'm missing this. You start off with Olyphant and Goggins and add the hottest bod in all of TV. . . PPHHHHHHUUUUUCCCCKKKK!!!!

* for those failing to place her, she's the chick who played the older sister who was in love since childhood with the family attorney in Dirty Sexy Money, and the 'client' Thomas Jane fell in love with on Hung.

Its because alot of the creators have ties to other shows.

For instance the creator of Sons of Anarchy, was one of the writers from The Shield.

I'm totally the opposite. Love the mix of anger and wistful regret and cockiness and southern manners.

And as big a fan of Deadwood as I was, I didn't think Olyphant distinguished himself overly there. Part of that had to do with him playing such a reserved character often juxtaposed against one of [and amidst many of] the most fascinating outlandish characters in TV history.

Anyone else get the feeling that Ava is setting Raylan up?

It's possible, but I sense that the purpose of her character is to show the draw of Raylan's roots. He's angry and driven and wants to be anywhere but home. But he's not immune to the charm of a fine piece of tail with a good heart.

There's already enough drama in the situation with him already being on thin ice in his profession, and turning around and sleeping with a material witness. A betrayal might be a cheap thrill, but there are richer directions they can go with the situation.

FX renews 'Justified' (http://livefeed.hollywoodreporter.com/2010/05/fx-renews-justified.html#more)

FX has ordered a second season of "Justified" with a 13-episode pickup.

“We are very excited about the tremendous, widespread acclaim that Justified has received from both audiences and television critics,” said FX president and GM John Landgraf. “Graham Yost, Tim Olyphant, Elmore Leonard and their talented partners have crafted a uniquely ambitious and entertaining series which is everything we aspired to when we developed the show.”

The drama, starring Timothy Olyphant, had a towering debut, dropped sharply, then stabilized in the ratings. To date, the show has averaged 3.4 million total viewers in its freshman season and 1.7 million in the 18-49 demo. The Season 1 finale airs June 8.

“I’m just thrilled, and I’m looking forward to chronicling the future adventures of Raylan Givens,” said Yost. “To work with an actor like Tim, who was born to play this role, has been a wonderful experience.”

"This pick-up speaks volumes to the quality and collaboration on the series, and our unparalleled partnership with FX,” said Jamie Erlicht, president or programming for Sony Pictures Television. "The viewer response to Justified has been as enthusiastic as ours was when we first heard the pitch."Woohoo!

Best new show this year, I think. Although I haven't watched Treme yet.

I've been watching this show from the begining. Great show. Prior to this I had not paid much attention to Timothy Olyphant. But I can't help but observe that he is a great Eastwood successor. If they ever wanted to reprise making Eastwood type westerns in Hollywood Olyphant should be the obvious choice. Add to an Eastwoodian mannerism the voice of the suave Robert Wagner and a dash of a young Jack Nicholson's devilish looks and you've got Timothy Olyphant. Very good combo.

Season two's big bad, according to James Hibbard of the Hollywood Reporter:'Lost' vet Jeremy Davies joins 'Justified' (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/blogs/live-feed/lost-vet-jeremy-davies-joins-32047)

October 21
James Hibberd

Exclusive: Lost physicist Jeremy Davies is joining FX's neo-Western Justified.

Davies is joining the show's season two cast in a heavily recurring role as a nemesis to Timothy Olyphant's U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens.

The setup is certainly intriguing: Davies plays "Dickie Bennett," the smartest of three brothers and a high school rival of Givens. Since Prohibition, the Bennett and Givens families have warred like the Hatfields and McCoys. Dickie's family traffics in weed, for which Bennett spent time in prison. He still walks with a limp due to an altercation with Raylan on the baseball field when they were both 17.

Best known to TV fans from his role as ever-distracted physicist Daniel Faraday on Lost, the Untitled Entertainment-repped Davies has an impressive list of theatrical credits including Saving Private Ryan, Rescue Dawn and Solaris.

Justified makes its return in February with 13 episodes.

It really is the best written show on TV right now. They have every nuance nailed from development to authentic rural/southern dialogue. I live in Kentucky it is very "real", some shows go "cornpoe" to deliver the "southern feel", this feels in no way synthetic. Great show. Raylen and Boyd are great on screen together.

I may end up having to check this show out, I live (born and raised) in Harlan County and not much of the show has really caught my attention. I have heard people talking about it and will probably attempt to catch an episode or two this weekend.

How exactly did they do the coal mining scene in it? I am interested in how they filmed it, and portrayed it (I am a coal miner also). They are supposed to actually begin doing some filming in Harlan and incorporate some more local sites in the upcoming episodes. Don't really know how much truth there is to this though....

How is the series going? Is it any good?

Another tidbit of information some of the music in season two was done by a band called Cumberland River and they do an awesome job playing bluegrass, local talent I worked with one of the members, they are really excited about being featured in some of the shows.

I'd be shocked if they kill off Doyle & Mags.

Great show last week. This is quielty one of the best written shows on TV. The dialogue is subtlety excellent. Loved the comedic stuff between Raylon and Tim his "shadow".

So whats up with Ava's character? She was married to Boyds brother right and that didnt turn out too well.......Why was she drawn to Boyd so much when at first she was adamant that he bring no crime around her. She trying to get back at Raylan?

Loved the comedic stuff between Raylon and Tim his "shadow".

The usual chat between him and his boss is also great. Especially because the boss does not 'look' like he would be witty and smart.

Best episode written thus far. And that is saying something. SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The scene when Raylan takes Dickie to the woods was eerily reminding of the scene from "Miller's Crossing."

That's what I was thinking watching it. It was definitely an homage to "MC." I wonder if someone in charge of this show was involved in the production of "MC."

This is going to seem like a strange comparison, but I finished reading the new Sookie Stackhouse book yesterday afternoon, and when it ended, I was like this is the ending? It just felt like there should be more, like it was missing a chapter. And that's how Justified felt. It felt like they somehow left 5 minutes off. Good episode, but somehow it didn't feel like a finale despite the Bennett disposal.

Pretty much how i felt. It just kind of ended. They never explained the old lady who talked to Mags and was at the jailhouse last week. WTH??

It's definitely ironic that Dickie's the one that lived.

I just re-watched the last 10 minutes, and it's great right up the the point where Loretta hands Raylen the gun. Raylen and Mags drinking together at the end just didn't work for me, although logically-speaking it was fine, and he wouldn't know about the poison until she told him.

Pretty clear it was the guy's mom.

It's the age old bit about the little guy taking the fall for the big guy, and the big guy taking care of the little guy's family in return.

I liked the fact that Art came back to save Raylan. The entire season it was Raylan gradually pushing everyone away so it was logical that Art came back full circle again. However, for me they needed to give Art another scene in there where he comes to the conclusion that he really does need Raylan. The last they showed of him was saying No (which obviosuly means hes going to save him later)

All that to say, for me the payoff worked better in theory than in actual execution.

You know, thinking back, I'm not sure last week's episode wouldn't have worked better as a finale, and then have last night's start a new season. It might have bugged me a little less. But it would have left the main plot of the season unresolved over the break.

Well, at least we have some idea of what next season's going to bring:

Boyd's now the harlan county kingpin, and Arlo's looking like his number 2
Ava's still shot (you could conceivably have her die during the break)
Dickie's still alive
Winona and the baby
Art and Glynco
Black Pike

Dixie Mafia's still out there, too.

I'm surprised people generally seem a little disappointed in the finale. I loved it. Look forward to season 3.

Short interview I found at work the other day.

Timothy Olyphant on the Season-Two Finale of Justified and His Advice to Lakers Fans

As Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, Timothy Olyphant embodies a modern-day cowboy, right down to the Stetson. The trigger-happy lawman of the FX hit Justified is based on the protagonist from Elmore Leonard’s short story “Fire in the Hole,” but Olyphant has had a hand in Raylan’s development throughout the show’s second season. “I’m very involved in the show, in ways that I probably have no business being,” says the actor, who signed on as a producer after season one. “I enjoy it. Someone gave me a TV show, I figured I’d have as much fun as possible.” Vulture talked with Olyphant about what to expect from tonight’s finale, his guest stint on The Office, and why Lakers fans need to stop whining.

It feels like this whole season has been building up to a legendary showdown. The episode title alone, “Bloody Harlan,” is a hint of what’s to come—
Somebody’s going to stub a toe.

Sure, that’s all.
Someone’s going to need a Band-Aid.

Got any highlights you want to share about the episode?
I’m not sure I do. My job description is not giving away endings, you know? What can I tell you? I’ve seen it, and there’s a lot of good stuff. We’re very proud of the season, and the finale has what the best episodes of the season have: some great writing, great storytelling, great performances. I’m not beating around the bush, I just don’t know how to talk about it without telling you things you don’t want to know.

Last season’s finale — with its epic shoot-out that found Raylan and Boyd on the same side — was a big one, so this week has a lot to live up to.
My way of thinking is, well, we did that, so let’s not do it again. Nobody wants that. Even though they think they do, they don’t. And at the same time, let’s just try to live out this story as dramatically and interestingly as possible. The characters this season were just so rich and so great, and the ones that don’t stick around will be missed.

Even though the show has always done well with the critics, it seems like this season, with ratings way up, the show really took off. What was different?
I do think it’s a better show this year than last year. This season is certainly more reflective of the show I was hoping for. Graham [Yost, the series creator] and I had an opportunity to get to know each other last year and to have a dialogue of where we wanted the show to go. You saw that a little bit at the end of last season. You saw the show sort of find itself a little bit, and I think this year we sort of hit the ground running.

Elmore Leonard has given Justified his seal of approval. I read that the show inspired him to write another novel about Raylan.
Yeah, I have it here on my phone.

Did you have any say about what went into that?
Oh, no, no, no, no. I can only say that I asked him, very politely, and encouraged him to write it. That’s the only part I did, that’s all I can take credit for. After that, you let the man do the job. He knows what he’s doing.

As dramatic as Justified is, one of the greatest things about Raylan is his wit. You have really stellar comedic timing. Where does that come from?
Um, my mother? [Laughs.] I have no idea. My parents both have a good sense of humor; my brothers have a good sense of humor. I assume it’s a family trait. I appreciate the compliment. It’s one of my favorite things about Elmore’s work. First and foremost it’s cool, and secondly, it’s funny. And certainly it’s often more insightful than it first appears. Those are three things I’m always trying to check off on the show, and I’ve been given a lot of room to swing a cat, as they say. I have an incredible group of actors I get to work with, and they’re funny. We try not to hire anyone who’s not. I’m always reminding everybody, we’re trying to make a comedy. And then if there’s a scene that’s really funny, you try and find the drama. That’s the fun of it.

Speaking of comedy, you did do a few guest spots on The Office. What was it like jumping into that ensemble?
It was like a vacation. That show was a piece of cake. I don’t know if they know how good they’ve got it. It’s just such a great, easygoing, fun job. And they’re so good, you know? I got to do just that one scene with Steve Carell, walking up and down the hall, and it was such a dream. All said and done, I think it took fifteen minutes.

Also, you were a sports commentator until 2009 …
Yeah, I had a little radio gig.

Do you have any analysis you want to offer? Perhaps on the fate of your hometown Lakers?
You know, I grew up in northern California, so I will tell you that the Lakers’ troubles don’t trouble me too much. Since coming to L.A., I’ve more or less adopted the Clippers. As a basketball fan, I wanted to find a team that I could root for here in my city. The Clippers — none of my buddies growing up could fault me because they just assumed I wasn’t trying. Now they’ve got a great squad and I feel the patience has paid off. And I look forward to next season’s Clippers. The Lakers are going to be fine.

Fans were pretty nervous during that New Orleans series.
This town is full of drama. We’re always looking for more drama. I think they’re going to be fine. I think everyone should remain calm; they’re going to come out of the West. I foresee no difficulties until they meet the Eastern conference, until they get to the NBA Championship. And then I think it gets tricky.

You heard it here first.
You’re welcome.

I was disapointed in the finale just because it felt a bit too "contrived". I couldn't buy Dickie sneaking up and getting the drop on Raylin. Boyd showing up to save the day was about as far as I could buy Raylin's good luck -- but then later Art and the other marshals showed up in force to save the day (after Art had told Winona that Raylin was on his own). It was just a bit much.

I'm also not sure that I buy Mags not taking Raylin with her when she poisons herself. Or even that Raylin would sit down and have a drink with her knowing the full extent of what she and her boys had done (and after they had both just been shot, by the way).

There were about 10 other little nitpicky things that bothered me and kept pulling me out of the show, but I won't bore everyone with the details.

I really think that they might have had it scripted as either a 90-minute or 2-hour finale and had to cut it down to one. Then again, the episodes leading up to the finale were so well done ... maybe my expectations were just too high.
