The CBO Score, As Reported by Steny Hoyer [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

House Budget Committee Ranking Republican Paul Ryan responds to an NRO query about the news this morning: “The Congressional Budget Office has confirmed that there is currently no official cost estimate. Yet House Democrats are touting to the press — and spinning for partisan gain — numbers that have not been released and are impossible to confirm. Rep. James Clyburn stated he was 'giddy' about these unsubstantiated numbers. This is the latest outrageous exploitation by the Majority — in this case abusing the confidentiality of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office — to pass their massive health care overhaul at any cost.”

This CBO reporting this morning really is remarkable to me — the news is simply what Steny Hoyer says it is.

An official score from the budget office is expected around noon, but reports about the findings were leaked to the press before the formal release.

I always wonder why anyone puts any weight on these cost estimates. Interference of this kind into a private market will undoubtedly change behavior. How? To what magnitude? It's impossible to know. There is no way to accurately predict the cost of this monster. Although if we just look a history, we can say with a fair amount of certainty that a federal government plan will cost WAY more than anyone thought.

10 years from now (if we still have the dollar) there will be head scratching wondering why this bill cost so much more than it did. It happens with nearly every government program.

“Although CBO completed a preliminary review of legislative language prior to its release, the agency has not thoroughly examined the reconciliation proposal to verify its consistency with the previous draft. This estimate is therefore preliminary, pending a review of the language of the reconciliation proposal, as well as further review and refinement of the budgetary projections.” (CBO Director Doug Elmendorf, Letter To Rep. Nancy Pelosi, 3/18/10, P.1)

hmmm

And tell me, Mr. Orange, if this is so official as you claim, why have the Repubs not been allowed to see it?

Are they crippled or just too dumb to click the link I just posted?

And as for it being preliminary - of course they can't account for the changes that haven't been written in yet.

You're funny. That little blurb you just posted -

Well I didn't read your link. So full of yourself, ain't ya? So you posted a link to the CBO saying this isn't official as you claim it is official? You're a tardknuckle this day.
