Healthcare reform heats up in Arizona
Reported by: Imani Randolph
Last Update: 3/18 11:20 pm

PHOENIX – In a press conference held Thursday afternoon, Governor Jan Brewer said the federal healthcare reform bill sitting in Congress would financially devastate Arizona.

Brewer argued that a bill drafted by the federal government wouldn’t be a good fit for every individual state.

She said that the bill would lead to increased taxes for businesses and individuals in Arizona.

She also said that by forcing states to cover individuals that cannot afford their own care, the bill would add to Arizona’s largest catastrophic crisis in history.

“We are broke. The checkbook is overdrawn, the credit card is maxed out and we have mortgaged the house and Arizona cannot take anymore of it,” said Brewer.

Earlier in the day, Governor Brewer signed a budget that cuts down on Arizona’s current budget crisis. Two of the social services reduced in the bill were Medicaid and Kidscare, a health coverage program for children of low-income families.

Gov. Brewer said making the cuts was a difficult but necessary choice.

Assistant House Democratic Leader Representative Kyrsten Sinema said those cuts will cost Arizona crucial funding if the healthcare bill is passed in Washington.

Rep. Sinema is on the White House task force for healthcare reform.

Under the new bill, Rep. Sinema said Arizona would have been rewarded for its work to cover 100 percent of the population living at poverty level.

Now, if the bill passes, she said that the state, along with the rest of the country, would still be required to cover those living in poverty, but Arizona would not be eligible for additional funding due to the bill signed by the Governor on Thursday.

Rep. Sinema added that Arizona could regain its standing if the legislation were reversed before taking effect.

While Governor Brewer stated that she hasn’t read the healthcare reform bill, she has pledged to work with legislators around the country to file suit on behalf of the states if the bill passes.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick has said that she will vote to pass the healthcare bill. Reps. Harry Mitchell and Gabrielle Giffords have not announced how they will vote

the states will begin to slash at budgets of all kinds. This is a disaster for state budgets and will only be made worse by the toll on the economy and further slow down of any hope of a recovery.

Less revenue for states, higher expences, more and extended unemployment.

Kansas has already slashed aid to local schools and highway repair is out. Soon the firings at all levels of government will start. MO DOT paid zero overtime for snow removal crews for first time ever this year. Get ready.

The states are gonna sue. Virginia AG was on last night with a suit being planned. They have a state law that blocks such a HC mandate.

I never liked Arizona anyway.

Last in, first out is what I say.

Except for Hawaii, they already have universal health care. and Alaska, Sarah Palin set it up so that Exxon provides cadillac health care to every Alaskan. The Alaskan women get MRIs to see if one of their dresses makes them look fat.

Translated: I like the current President because he is black. I don't like anyone disagreeing with the current President becasue he is black. I don't have the intelelctual acumen to fully graps the issues being discussed but I like whatever obama does because he is black.

So does Mass. And it costs them 27% more than the rest of the country. They have the highest insurance costs per capita in the country.

I like it. Finally we can break the country up into sections.

If you like socialized everything, take the coasts.

The people that love freedom and personal responsibility can take the south and midwest.

I wonder who will last longer........ROFL

Except Bush Didn't run the country into the ground. There was never a surplus, that was predictions on revenue never relaized from the dotcom bust. It was NEVER actual cash in the hand. HE didn't lie about WMD's. Further he was not the only decision maker. At the end of the day the UN voted to move forward because SH was violating UN resolutions as well as taking money under the table from other UN countries in excahnge for oil. Bush did not take over the banks. He along with congress loaned them money, which has been paid back.

Looks like Mitt Romney's chances for the 2012 nomination may not be that good after all.

Sits squarely on his shoulders in my book. Then again, I believe the majority of Mass. residents wanted it. Well, they got it. And now they don't think it's so hot.

How is Hawaii doing with their universal expensive health care?
