Gator WR enjoys having 'a real quarterback'
Posted by John Taylor on March 22, 2010 8:26 PM ET
Tim Tebow has accumulated more than his fair share of detractors over the last three months, and figures to accumulate even more in the weeks leading up to the NFL draft. From draft analysts to general members of the media to fans, there seem to be individuals around every corner looking to take a shot at the former Florida quarterback and his pro potential.

Now, however, even a former teammate is looking to get in a shot or two on the former Heisman winner for how he orchestrated the QB position at the collegiate level.

Aside from Urban Meyer's return, the biggest storyline for the Gators this spring is John Brantley taking over UF's offense. Brantley is more of a throw-first QB, especially when compared to Tebow's "go through two reads, run like Pamplona bull into opposing defense" style of play.

The differences between the two quarterbacks has not been lost on his teammates, especially wide receiver Deonte Thompson. And, whether or not Thompson meant it to come out the way it did, his words as quoted by the Orlando Sentinel when talking about the differences between Brantley and Tebow were a direct, biting shot at the latter.

"You never know with Tim," Thompson said. "He can bolt. You think he's running but he'll come up and pass it to you. You just have to be ready. With Brantley, everything's with rhythm, with time. You know, a real quarterback."

Ummm, ouch?

Obviously, this means little or nothing as far as the 2010 Florida Gators are concerned, but it's still a little jarring to see an ex-teammate take a shot -- however indirect or unintentional it may have been -- at one of the iconic college football players in the last quarter century.

Again -- "A real quarterback"???

That stings me and I'm pretty much agnostic -- compared to most -- when it comes to Tebow. And, I would assume, it's a quote that Urban Meyer will not appreciate when it comes to his attention, especially in light of the criticism he's received for what observers see as a QB woefully prepared for success at the next level.

Espn better make this guy out to be a racist or something. It's going to be silly having Tebow sitting in the green room with all these people saying he sucks.

It would be funny as hell to watch him sit there the whole time and go undrafted.

Maybe Tebow will be happy to have receivers who pay attention to the play.

I wonder what they would do with him if he slips far
isn't the first day just round one?

You know, I almost think they have some kind of inside line on him going in the first. Otherwise it seems inhumane to have him in the green room.

Yeah I highly doubt he will be there, particularly with the new format.

Since they are doing the first round by itself this year, my guess is that he'll sit there through that then go home for rounds 2-7 where he can be saved from further embarrassment. During that round 1 ESPN will suck up to him and talk about how some team is going to get a bargain for a great person and an athlete.

From what I've heard, they are inviting 2-3X the number of players they normally do, including guys that could go in the first 50 or so picks.

And I'm pretty sure I've read that Tebow has already accepted the invite.

Once you strip away all the glitter and glamor of Tee-Bow he's a 3rd to 5th round project QB. ESPN wants him in the green room for pretty much the same reason the cast to "Jersey Shore" was chosen.

That's interesting and seems like a decent enough idea to maybe help with the only guy there not yet taken awkwardness.

I guess that makes sense.

Guys I head on sirius radio that pat kerwan say that tebow is invited to day two not one. Since it's three days and Thursday and Friday prime time they invited some prospects to NY for day one. Then to peak interest on day two they invited some round two to three round projected guys on day two. Tebow is projected to go round two to three. I'm still towrn on him things I love about him and things I hate. I personally believe he is at least a two year project. Also as I stated B4 in order to trully succede he needs to go to a team with a great OC/qb coach or a great QB coach if not he won't succede.

Just my two cents
