Chiefs GM Scott Pioli Says Trade Chart Is Outdated

http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/240996/headshot_tiny.jpg by Joel Thorman (http://www.sbnation.com/users/Joel%20Thorman) on Apr 22, 2010 1:00 PM PDT (http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2010/4/22/1437044/chiefs-gm-scott-pioli-says-trade) in 2010 Draft (http://www.arrowheadpride.com/section/2010-draft) http://cdn3.sbnation.com/images/icons/comment.v1599.png 88 comments, 88 new

We've talked on occasion about the trade value chart (http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/Value-Chart.php). It's essentially a chart developed years ago that gives a point value for each draft pick and outlines what's needed to make a trade.

It used to be the way trades were facilitated in the NFL.

However, as Chiefs (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/KAN) GM Scott Pioli explained today on KCChiefs.com (http://www.kcchiefs.com/), the financial ramifications of a top pick are not reflected in the chart.

"Everyone has a trade value sheet," he said. "Years ago, I remember when I first was in draft rooms, watching people with the numbers and going down the list saying 'If we trade this pick, it gives us X points, and then they'll give us Y and Z but those are still 200 points behind where we want to be.'

"Conceptually," he continued, "that was a great idea in the past. In recent years, the trade charts never took into account the cost of picks from a financial standpoint. That was something that was missing."

Pioli says he tried to create a new chart while in New England with the finances accurately reflected in the point value of each pick but ultimately couldn't come up with a chart that works.

"You can look at different models and systems but at the end of the day you have to sit there and think, 'How much do we want that player?'"

Pioli was part of the Patriots (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/NEP) that made 29 trades with draft picks and nearly two-thirds of the league so make no bones about it - he likes to make trades.

"I love to trade because I think it creates opportunity."

Now, about that trade partner....

Oh for fucks sake. If you read between the lines, it means that Pioli may be willing to get raped in the ass in order to move down.

Good grief

This morning started out so promising.......

There is a distinct possibility that Friday night will end and I'll dislike Pioli with the same fervor as my hatred for Dayton Moore.

Please, please, don't fuck this thing up you hyped motherfucker.

The fact that many of you believe Pioli is incorrect is simply stunning to me. If you believe he is close to being the only GM in the leauge that thinks this way you are pretty ignorant yourself.

The financial implications of picking high in the draft weren't an issue when the chart was created because rookies weren't breaking the bank.

The highest paid players in the leauge were not and should not be rookies taken high in the draft before doing a damn thing.

It is outdated and that is not that hard to understand unless you just want to bitch.

While that is true.... it shouldn't mean that the Chiefs are the only ones to play by those rules...

The reason I don't like this, is it reeks of a trade down. We aren't paying shit in salary and now we wan't to trade down? This team grates on my nerves.

I don't disagree with the statement. I disagree with him talking about it publicly today. It's almost like he's trying to get it out there that he'll take shitty value just to get out of the 5. Why not do this last year in a shitty draft with no elite playmakers for our 3rd pick?

I hope the airspace over CP's servers aren't heavily used...the impending meltdown and resulting mushroom cloud will dwarf the volcanic cloud that has decimated the airline industry.

Nobody knows at this point. Everybody is surmizing what they believe will happen, not necessarily what will happen. If we truly covet Berry, we should pull the trigger, but I believe we have targeted someone else, who is in the 8-12 range. If we don't select Berry, there's also a chance he falls.

I think there's a 0 percent chance of anything more than a nominal drop.

Smart organizations take elite talents.
