View Full Version : Chiefs Arenas is NOT Mark McMillian

I am sick of reading comparisons to Mark McMillian. Mark McMillian was 5'7", 154lbs.

Arenas, is 5'9", 197lbs. That is a HUGE difference.

Oh, and you know who he compares to? Brandon Flowers, who is 5'9", 187lbs.

Arenas is thicker than Flowers and is the same height. Arenas is faster than Flowers. Flowers ran a 4.58. Arenas ran a 4.60, but tweaked his hamstring. Arenas subsequently ran a 4.53.

So, if you want to compare guys based on their size and speed... Brandon Flowers is who you should be bringing up. Not Mighty Mouse.

Now, one reason I think Mighty Mouse gets brought up is because Arenas is very instinctive, and he moves very well laterally. He is a natural fit at nickel back. But, the Chiefs best corner currently is a guy who is very similar in size and speed. Flowers may even be the best defender on the Chiefs team. The Chiefs just added a very, very similar player.

Anyways, I just read Nick Athan's take on the draft..... and even he compared Arenas to Mighty Mouse. I just don't understand comparing a guy to someone two inches shorter and 43 lbs lighter.

Let's not get carried away here. Flowers also had a shutdown career in college but his stock dropped because of his 40 time. Arenas was a good not great corner at 'Bama. Good chance he matures into a good nickel back. But that's probably his ceiling. If that's what you're saying, then okay. But will he ever be as good as Flowers, very doubtful.

I am not saying he will be as good as Flowers. But, everyone wants to knock him for his size. They talk about drafting an 'undersized' nickel corner. He is actually bigger and as fast as Flowers.

This cb class had a lot more depth than the one that Flowers came out in. So, Arenas may have been hurt with that.

With Saban's aggressive 3-4 defense, they blitzed Arenas a lot. He was their best blitzing corner, so he was stuck at Nickel.

Arenas was drafted to return kicks. The fact that he can play corner is only a plus. Get it. Kick returner.

And I compare Athan to that disney character, what's his name ......

Arenas was not only drafted to return kicks (best in the NCAA), but to likely be our nickel back for years to come. I don't think people understand how great of a weapon Arenas is at the nickel. As mentioned he is the best blitzing corner in the draft and is one tough SOB! There was a reason the Chiefs took him as early as they did... they had him rated higher than some teams.

I've watched Arenas play a lot. I used to watch Bama' games as much as possible because I thought for sure Cody would be a KC target. Everytime I watched a Bama game, Arenas would have two or three big plays. He matched up outside in a two WR set, then would shift inside when the opposing O brought three WR's out.

IMO, Arenas is a better CB than Brandon Carr right now. He does remind me a lot of Flowers. Arenas is VERY tough, likes to hit and likes to blitz. He can cover as well.

Arenas is a lot more than just a return guy in my book...

My favorite Minnie Mouse moment was when a reciever caught a pass for a first down, Minnie pushed him out of bounds, then turned around and did his little muscle flexing move.

Let's just say he seemed to have an inferiority complex...

He sounds like a kid that would have loved to play safety, but wasn't blessed with the natural size for the position. If he plays as tough as he did at Bama, then he should be a big asset to the team, as well as a source for entertaining big hits on unsuspecting running backs. I like that the Chiefs have a whole secondary that not only has no trouble tackling, but likes to hit other people... well, I think Page likes to hit other people, I can't really remember anymore. Is he the one that missed tackles all the time, or was that just the other one?

Nope. Arenas.

This short article (http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jan/07/sports/la-sp-alabama-x-factor7-2010jan07) makes me like him even more. They called his position the "star" position (when he played up by the LOS).

He sounds like an interesting prospect for the Chiefs. If they can get a great year out of Flowers, which they should be able to, they could have Arenas blitzing from up by the LOS while Carr covers his man and Berry plays centerfield. If Arenas gets pressure more often than not, Berry and Carr could see a lot of interceptions, hopefully.

Actually, I think having a decent rusher from the opposite side is the prescription, but an uptick in coverage, is at least a decent over the counter treatment.

The improvement of the secondary is going to work hand-in-hand with how well we get pressure on the quarterback. We could have a dream team in the secondary (and with Flowers, Carr and Berry we're off to a good start) and still give up a bajillion yards through the air if the QB has all day to throw the ball. Considering we marginally improved in getting to the quarterback from '08 to '09 with a new defensive scheme, adding another viable option to getting to the quaterback in a corner that excels at blitzing should help our sack numbers and ultimately, allow our secondary to make some plays.

Of course, that's the idea anyways....

say what you want but we still don't have a corneback that can cover a speed guy.

The chargers have a big, fast wr corp
the Faiders have a big, fast wr corp (who now have a QB that might actually get them the ball)

no corner speed is a problem ... having a bunch of 5'9 guys who run a 4.5/40 is an issue.

I think the big problem was that Tamba would get to the QB, and the QB could easily slide up in the pocket. A real NOse Tackle that can push the pile back will give QBs less room to do that.
