View Full Version : NFL Draft Random Thoughts from Bill Belichick (General NFL and Draft Related)

I posted some but not all of this in random threads around here, but had a bit more to add and figured it was worth a separate thread given that nobody here is likely to have picked up on this otherwise. I've seen/heard multiple interviews with BB over the past few days, and thought there were some items of general interest to any hardcore NFL fan (rather than strictly Patriots related stuff).

1. The draft this year was very deep. That's not much of a newsflash, but more interesting was his specific comment that players the Patriots took in the 6th and 7th round had higher grades than the guys the Patriots were taking in the 4th round in 2007, "for example." Among other things that suggests that the 2007 draft was unusually thin.

2. The 1991 NFL draft was one of the worst in terms of available talent in NFL history. There were a few studs, obviously, such as Brett Favre, Ricky Watters and Ted Washington, but beyond that, he does seem to be right.

http://football.about.com/od/nfldrafthistory/a/1991draftresult.htm

3. There has been a trend in the NFL in the last year or so moving away from the more spread out, high flying passing attacks that were the trend a few years back, notwithstanding the Colts/Saints Super Bowl. He specifically cited that around the NFL last year there were 3x as many plays involving an extra offensive lineman (instead of a TE or whatever) as there had been in quite a few years. That's ignoring goal line/short yardage situations. That may explain to some degree why the Patriots, at least, went with a very big, physical draft.

4. This point is more Patriots-specific, but will apply to the Chiefs anytime the Chiefs trade down in the draft. Philosophically, if the Patriots have a group of players with a very similar grade, and they don't particularly care which one they get, then they will trade back some spots to pick up extra assets. They are NOT moving down to downgrade the value of the players they are getting.

In other words if they have 5 guys with similar grades, and they're up, and they're not too particular about which one they get, then they'll gladly move back up to 5 spots, pick up extra picks, and still get a guy with the same grade as the guy they would have gotten if they drafted at their original spot.

Who cares what he thinks? He sucks at drafting and just got lucky with ONE sixth round pick/Chiefsplanet.

If it was all Brady, how come they haven't won it all since 2004 when the defense got old. Seymour,Bruschi,Harrison,Law,Vrabel,McGinest,Pfifer,Milloy,Hamilton,Ted Washington. They had some players. And before any dumbasses say "they wouldn't have won shit without Brady".....the exact same thing is true about Bradshaw,Montana,Starr,Aikman or any other dynasty. Let's see what geniuses Noll,Walsh,Lombardi and Johnson would have been without those QBs

Has Belicheck ever mentioned why he drafted Tommy Vardell 9th overall back in 92 with the Browns? ROFL

Belichick is a hell of an interesting football mind. I would love to meet him one day. Actually if I could pick any head coach to have a 30 minute sit down with, it would be Belichick.

If you're that fond of him, then definitely check out the recent interview done with him on NFL.com. It is full of interesting historical tidbits. He probably has as much or more knowledge of the history of the NFL as anybody.

For what it's worth, it's not even that Patriots-centric. He's got Lawrence Taylor stories, the story of how Jack Lambert getting drafted was an indirect result of a Rolling Stones concert, and other nifty anecdotes.

Yeah I saw this when they aired on NFLN. It was interesting and nice to see Belichick open up a little more than usual. Anyone who cares should watch these vids.

Belichick gives the media pretty much nothing when it comes to specifics on his team -- which of course is all they want so they get pissed and frustrated.

You can, however, get lots of nuggets from him on NFL history, trends in the NFL generally, etc.

Ya right, Bill is the REAL reason the Pats were a dynasty, and nobody else mattered.

Holy crap, haven't heard that name in a while.

Carl made a nice pick with Dale Carter at 1. Matt Blundin at 2, not so much...
