Wireless Printer Adapter-Any trick to them?

We have 6 pcs in our home and 6 printers; seems like too many printers. I have a new color printer I want to use for 3 of our pc's then I want to run the other 3 though a single printer.
Guy who does our tv/stereo wiring says he will install a wireless printer adapter for $275.00. I tried to look up wirelss print adapters to see what they cost but I can't tell which one I would need.

Question: Do particular printers/pc's require specific wireless adapters or are they universal? Is there knowledge involved in installing or are they pretty much plug-and-play?

I'm a cheap bastard and don't like paying for things I don't have to. Thanks for any knowledge you can share.
