...and other things. This one is for the computer geeks out there. How many of you have a company laptop? And would you dare download software and/or porn if you were on your own network?

If you did, how would you clean up your trail to keep from being traced?

Hypothetical question of course.

well if you are on your own network you don't really have to worry about being traced.

what you have to worry about is a browser history being left behind still on your work computer.

here's a start ... read this: http://www.clear-history.org/

Seeing as I work for a public school and have a laptop furnished by them.... fuck no.

btw ... after you delete/clean everything you should probably Defrag your hard drive too. It will reorganize your data which basically overwrites the entire drive.

if you want to get really serious you can download this free program: http://sourceforge.net/projects/eraser/files/Eraser%206/6.0.7/Eraser%206.0.7.1893.exe/download

click little arrow by schedule and make a new task "erase unused disk space" it will basically overwrite anywhere on your hard drive that doesn't currently have any information. You don't lose your information ... just any data that used to be there and was deleted would then be unrecoverable.

i believe the tone of this hypothetically scenario suggests that the
ship has "already sailed" so to speak.

This would be post sail cleanup.

of course I can. I'm talking about once I'm at home. I don't go anywhere wilder than CP at work.

That happened to a coworker of mine. A few guys got called in the office, and were asked "Who went to www.insertpornlink.com"? The guy raised his hand and said, "Uh, yeah. That'd be me." (Pretty cool of him, I thought.)

The boss basically just laughed and shook his head, and said, "Don't do that. They see everything."

Firefox has private browsing mode as well

it's not supposed to save any internet information while you in it ... no cookies,no history etc.

They'll never figure out where you've been if you do this:

Don't believe that BS about surfing privately. I can get where you have been and what you saw no matter what you do to erase your history, use private browsing etc. They only "safe" way to wipe data off a hard drive is to reformat the HD and to write 1's and 0's to the hard drive using several passes. Anything less than that I can get data off your HD. And even then the data may be retriveable.

But, in most cases they will only look superficially using explorer or at a cookie history.

On top of that, if using Vista / 7 just go to the start menu and type in .jpeg or .gif and you will see all of your pictures.

Seriously though, if you are dumb enough to view porn on your work computer, you deserve to get fired when you get caught.
