How about getting out of the way and letting some young person trying to support his family and make ends meet have a job:

This shit just burns me up. I suppose I'm expected to celebrate this sort of crap?:cuss:

These old fucks probably got more money than God stashed away and don't even need the income.

We've got a real unemployment rate of 17-20% and this is the nonsense that gets celebrated. Unbelievable.

It's actually quite a controversy here in NM. The "double dippers" are making big bucks by retiring from state and local jobs for a few months and then getting hired back in some other capacity. Advocates say we're retaining the best qualified people, opponents look at it as manipulating the system while preventing younger folks an opportunity. I fall on the opponent side.

Me too. Right now, millions of baby boomers who could retire but won't are clogging up top heavy positions in hundreds of fortune 500 companies. They are offered killer golden parachutes and buy out packages, and they still won't budge. And the companies can't dump them because they will sue them.

It f'n pisses me off, and B.O. and his leftist economic agenda is just making it worse.

The real problem is the defined benefit pension system that is going to completely f**k all taxpayers int he long run -- federal, state and local governments all have employees that get these pensions, and they are rapidly being eliminated in the private workplace because they are a massive albatross.

The fact that they have probably taken losses in the stock market and had a severe economic shock in the last couple of years couldn't possibly have anythign tod o with it...

Or you could retire, but structure your compensation in the last, oh, 3 years of employment to artificially maximize your pension. While I can't entirely blame someone for taking advantage of a loophole, it's the kind of thing I expect out of boomers.

"Marcia Fritz, president of the California Foundation for Fiscal Responsibility, has a Web site that lists more than 9,000 pensioners who collect more than $100,000 a year. She calls it the "100K Club."

"Half of these people are public safety: firefighters, cops, prison guards — like the captains, chiefs, lieutenants. And then the other half are city managers and finance officers that had high wages and lots of years," Fritz says.

Fritz says some of these high earners can increase their pensions using a method called "spiking." It means cashing in unused vacation and sick leave just before retirement.

"That goes into their final salary, and then they get paid that in retirement for the rest of their life," she says."

There is also the need in business for valuable experience. Those folks who retire after 30-35 years take a lot of smarts with them and you cannot hire a new person out of school and have anything close to what you had. In a lot of cases companies find themselves with a very real brain drain and have to go back to some people who were very skilled and capable and hire them back in a consulting capacity. Or the competition finds out the person is available and goes after them. These are not the 90 year olds in story, its the mid 50 to mid 60's.

Also todays college grads have a different career view that is not based on staying with a company long term, instead jumping after 3-5 years to a different employer. Companies cannot hire and train a newbie when they can go get experience and not have this new attitude to deal with.

It also has to do with the fact that Americans, in a contrarian sort of way, are living longer and healthier lives. If we rolled back to the average male living to about 67 years old this problem would go away.

I hear ya.

Look, the people they profiled in the link aren't really the people I'm talking about, I'm talking about employees with over thirty years at a fortune 500 company, house is paid for, kids are all grown up, their annual income from pension/nest egg/SSI et > current income YET THEY WON'T LEAVE.

And I think it's selfish to watch a younger employee with a family to support and a mortgage to pay get laid off even though they are probably more productive than you and the company would rather you left that have to let them go.

That's all I'm saying.

Well, sure there are two sides of the story. I'm not saying a company should dump old unproductive workers who have been loyal for a long period of time. I'm not advocating that.

But if you ever worked for a Fortune 500 company you know what I'm talking about-- there is alot of dead weight, and some (most?) can afford to retire but won't.

When you work there and you see them, they are demoralizing because they are dumpy, frumpy do nothings who have meetings all day. They should stop being so friggin' greedy and retire already and give somebody else a shot.

I mean, can you imagine if NFL teams had to keep players as long as they wanted to stay on the team? Even though they weren't productive, they had a pension, they didn't need the money you still couldn't fire them?

I disagree pretty strongly. If there's a problem with people exploiting pension loopholes, then fix that, but who the hell are you to tell someone to stop working?

Frankly, if someone is so untalented or unmotivated that a 90-year-old worker is the difference between them working and unemployment, I have no sympathy at all for them.

I dont care how much money I've saved up or whether I "need" to be working or not, the damned government is not going to tell me if I can or can't work.

Pops is retiring soon, but he's been riding the crest of a wave that's gonna ruin his Co sometime soon. He's perpetually been in the class of hires that was 1-2 years of seniority ahead of layoffs. And this huge company has a huge doughnut hole of talent. Their workforce is like 70% aged 25-30yo and 29% 62yo+ with 1% in between.

FTR, what's going to ruin the Co is the retirement of his peers, not their continued employment. I could give an element or two that factors in, but in the interest of continued anonymity, I'll just say, they're facing the loss of a sizeable contingent of their workforce on a bad timeline for their long-range plans, with only a contingent of noobs remaining.
