PHOENIX (AP) - The Obama administration plans to announce Tuesday that it will send as many as 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to improve border security, an Arizona congresswoman said.
Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords also said in a statement released Tuesday that President Barack Obama will request $500 million in funding for border security.

Part of Giffords' district borders Mexico.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's spokesman said the governor hadn't been told of the move prior to her office being contacted by The Associated Press and had no immediate comment.

In 2006, President George W. Bush sent thousands of troops to the border to perform support duties that tie up immigration agents. The troops wouldn't perform significant law enforcement duties.

That program has since ended, and politicians in border states have called for troops to be sent there to curb human and drug smuggling and prevent Mexico's drug violence from spilling over into the United States.

I was curious how long it would take for this to get posted. I almost posted it myself when I saw it around 4 this afternoon.

Oh, and it won't work. This is nothing more than putting a band aid on a gaping wound.

The better to enforce Martial Law whenever he wants to put the smack down on Arizona's immigration law. :p

Maybe he'll do that. Declare Martial Law on Arizonans and escort the illegals over the border. He'll get a sticky from Mexico's president.

True, but I don't see us building a wall and selling tags any time soon.

My thoughts exactly:rolleyes:

But seriously, Obama is realizing his Calderon stunt didn't go over well with the majority of America so now he must make a Gitmo like statement to "We the People".

You know, in the beginning of O's term he appeased his left base saying he would close Gitmo in one yr knowing full well he could not do this but always giving lip service to it.

Likewise, after this Calderon debable with already plummeting poll #'s he realizes he must now give the appearance of protecting our borders for "We the People" knowing full well he will never do it. Count on it!:thumb:

"O" lets Calderon "bitch slap" us in our own house and then within 5 days he makes a statement that he is sending 1200 troops to the border????????????? Come OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!! This statement contradicts everything he did last week. He is POSING for higher POLL NO's and looks like a FOOL!!!

Playing both sides of the fence and losing support on both sides of the aisle EXCEPT that "O" IS winning in destroying "The Free Market Capitalistic Society of America" which is his 'REAL GOAL' anyhow.:shake:

1200. 3 hour hour work shifts means 400 on duty at any time. Great job there Mr Prez. Bonehead.

Like sending one fireman to a house fire with a bucket.

It doesn't matter if it does any good. This way he can go in front of the cameras during the next state of the union and say, "We deployed troops to help Arizona secure the border."

The Republicans had requested I think either 3 or 6 thousand troops and 2 billion dollars, and this was on Fox yesterday. They showed McCain saying thanks for the 1200 troops, but it really isn't enough.

This is just O trying to position himself so that he can say he did something and that he beat the Republicans to the punch. It ain't gonna work...

What I read was they will be assigned to do office work. Typical government. Need Patrols on border and help at border crossings so we send 1200 bureaucrats in training.

Perhaps I was premature in the credit I was giving him.

No need to discuss with governor what is needed, where, how many, to accomplish what. Just send 1200 and hold a presser, some god photos, tell the mexicans he loves them. Move on, beat up BP.

It is the same role they had when Bush sent the 6000.

The official said the National Guard would be used to "provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support," as well as support "counternarcotics enforcement" and provide "training capacity" until the Border Patrol can bring more officers on board.

Unfortunately 1200 or 6000 is not near enough. There needs to 20,000-40,000 troops manning the border and not in support roles.

I know that alot of people though think that violates The Posse Comitatus Act

I agree and the POTUS is required by law to protect our borders.

There just isn't any will to do it politically because it will piss off all the Hispanic voters.

He had to do something, he let a woman Governor show him up, who's the next one that will .

Obo is really out of touch with the people & the issues with this country. He's in over his head. The next move he makes will be to lash out at the people saying, Hey, It's not easy being the POTUS, back off and let me do my job!

This move was nothing but to try and pacify McCain and other Republicans into moving toward an immigration bill this year. Obama challenged McCain to stand up against his base and work with him on this bill. Screw your constituents; do what I want you to do.
