I don't know why we act like shoes are so critically important. People walk around this planet every single day without shoes and they're just fine. In fact, I'm barefoot at this very moment and I feel great!

sure, but what's the life expectancy of all the people who don't own shoes? it's clear by comparing shoe ownership
to life expectancy around the world that shoes add decades to a person's life.

it even holds true at the high end. women own more shoes than men, and women live longer. shoes are really, really important.

Yup! I have a seafoam/turquoise shirt that I specifically bought two pairs of shoes to match with. And to be honest, those "ugly" RT1's were only purchased because they were $25 at a Nike outlet store. Nice Puma First Rounds. I adore Puma. Whenever I go up to Chicago I drive up through Iowa instead of taking the faster route for me (U.S. 36 into IL then I-55 to Chicago). Why? Because the outlet mall in Aurora on I-80 has a PUMA OUTLET STORE (in addition to Nike, Adidas, Reebok, etc). Last summer I bought seven pairs of shoes from the Puma outlet, none costing more than $30.

Very serious. I made fun of them when my coworker showed up in them one day, but then about a week later I gashed my knee slipping on an incline in Griffith Park that my toes would likely have gripped if they had been free instead of locked in my Mizunos. I bought them the next day, and I can easily go up even steeper inclines gripping onto many sizes of rocks. The soles are just thick enough to withstand a direct step onto a pointy rock, though I'm running on rocky dirt trails not sidewalk or street debris.

I'll try it tomorrow to see how they do on a pavement that doesn't give like the dirt does and let you know.

The new Nike Free's are intended for the whole barefoot running / freerunning craze. And yeah, he was wearing Frees, I believe. They've obviously not quite as extreme as the Vibram's, but they're still part of the same movement.

They're huge with high school and college kids. In the last few months, I've really seen them switch over to the guys wearing them a lot as well (a whole lot of the "metal" scenesters, which is sort of interesting as their kind of effete shoes). So yes, I think they're just going to get bigger and more popular... then they'll probably go bankrupt when they become uncool.

They definitely have that thing going for them when you put them on and say, "Damn. these things are comfortable and awesome to wear." Just like Birkenstocks, Crocs, and all of the other footwear fads that have come and gone.

I have some friends who wear them. They do look comfy though, and they're not expensive so who knows I might try one out for the hell of it. The buy one, give one is a great marketing technique. I don't know if I'd be brave enough to wear them to the gym, not because of the looks, because the last thing I want is a free weight to fall on my foot.

What do you guys think of these?

See lots of kids wearing those as well, and they look comfy.

As for the TOMS in the gym: my kettlebell instructor told me to wear flat shoes, and said that he'd encourage us to train barefoot if it weren't against our gym's rules. TOMS were the closest thing to barefoot I had, and I've enjoyed them. Funnily enough, it's caught on at the gym and there's like 3-4 other dudes that train with TOMS on now.

I don't care for any retro/neon Nike bullshit. I'm fine with the colors, I just don't view shoes as an accessory meant to match up with other articles of clothing. I do like Puma's because they fit really snug and are light as shit. Own a pair of Air-Max's if I feel the need to do anything athletic or wear shorts. Sandals are where it's at son. Between April and October you'll rarely find me wearing shoes of any sort outside of work.

Of course, I wear dress shoes on most occasions. Black or brown dress shoes. Yippee!

eh, I've never been the kinda guy that has to have the trendy shit. I have ~10 pairs of shoes, mostly because I get new balance (that last me forever) and have a few other pairs that are occasion specific (dress shoes, sandals, hiking sandals, kicks, and running shoes).

I would never pay that kinda jack for shoes that look like ass (the men's shoes on tom's shoes website do not even come close to appealing to me).

The funny thing to me is the denial that aesthetic, for many people, is malleable. Something, at first, looks idiotic and weird. After repeated exposure, marketing, and infiltration into the mainstream the aesthetic changes. And what was once "hipster chic" weirdness becomes commonplace and the norm.

Here in AZ flip flops are considered acceptable day and night wear. I'm a Nike and Adidas flop man myself although there are many who go the upper-end flip flop route.
When it doesn't rain or go under 100 degrees for months on end you get into slip-on footwear so you can walk outside without vulcanizing the soles of your feet.

I'd like to hear more. I'm intrigued by them, but a little nervous about stepping on stuff. My race runs tend to be in rugged terrain or on dirt.

Ran a bit on pavement with gravel. Seemed fine, though one pointy rock in the pothole I need to have fixed in my own driveway jabbed the side of my little toe above the thicker sole. It hurt a bit, but I can't run up that incline in regular running shoes anyway, so I still did better in the barefoot shoes.

If I ran on pavement regularly, my only question at this point would be about durability of the sole, and that pavement might wear them down quickly to the point of them not being as effective at protecting my feet, and having to buy them more often.

I almost bought some Nike Frees this weekend as a compromise, but then I read some reviews that said you shouldn't run 10+ miles in them. I wonder if the same is true for Vibrams.

So I chickened out and bought some of my usual Asics Kayanos.
