I have been a part of a Methodist, Wesleyan, Assembly of God, and Baptist churches in my life so far. I really consider myself a Christian over just a single denomination. .... My wife and I have certain qualifications/expectations in the church our family attends whether that is Methodist, Wesleyan, AG, or Baptist. Most important to us is that we are learning and growing spiritually with in the confines of what the Bible teaches.

Interesting, I did not know that.

Lutherans are big on summaries of doctrine, which we call confessions. The first three are the great ecumenical creeds (Apostles, Nicene, and Athanasian). We read the Athanasian creed, which mentions the catholic faith three times, in church every Trinity Sunday, which is the first Sunday after Pentacost, which happened to be last Sunday.

Whoever will be saved shall, above all else,
hold the catholic faith.
Which faith, except everyone keeps whole and undefiled,
without doubt he will perish eternally.
And the catholic faith is this,
that we worship one God in three persons
and three persons in one God,
neither confusing the persons
nor dividing the substance.
For there is one person of the Father,
another of the Son,
and another of the Holy Spirit.
But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit is all one:
the glory equal, the majesty coeternal.
Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit.
The Father uncreated,
the Son uncreated,
and the Holy Spirit uncreated.
The Father incomprehensible,
the Son incomprehensible,
and the Holy Spirit incomprehensible.
The Father eternal,
the Son eternal,
and the Holy Spirit eternal.
And yet there are not three eternals
but one eternal.
As there are not three uncreated nor three incomprehensibles
but one uncreated and one incomprehensible.
So likewise the Father is almighty,
the Son almighty,
and the Holy Spirit almighty.
And yet they are not three almighties
but one almighty.
So the Father is God,
the Son is God,
and the Holy Spirit is God.
And yet there are not three gods;
but one God.
So likewise the Father is Lord,
the Son Lord,
and the Holy Spirit Lord.
And yet they are not three lords
but one Lord.
For as we are compelled by the Christian truth to acknowledge every person by himself
to be both God and Lord,
So we cannot by the catholic faith
say that there are three Gods or three Lords.
The Father is made of none, neither created nor begotten.
The Son is of the Father alone, not made nor created;
but begotten.
The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son, neither made nor created nor begotten
but proceeding.
So there is one Father, not three Fathers;
one Son, not three Sons;
one Holy Spirit, not three Holy Spirits.
And in this trinity none is before or after another;
none is greater or less than another;
But the whole three persons
are coeternal together and coequal,
so that in all things, as is aforesaid,
the Unity in Trinity
and the Trinity in Unity is to be worshiped..
He, therefore, that will be saved is compelled thus to think of the Trinity.
Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation
that he also believe faithfully the incarnation
of our Lord Jesus Christ.
For the right faith is
that we believe and confess
that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God,
is God and man;
God of the substance of the Father,
begotten before the worlds;
and man of the substance of his mother,
born in the world;
Perfect God and perfect man,
of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting.
Equal to the Father as touching his Godhead,
and inferior to the Father as touching his manhood;
Who, although he is God and man,
yet he is not two but one Christ.
One, not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh,
but by taking the manhood into God;.
One altogether,
not by confusion of substance,
but by unity of person.
For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man,
so God and man is one Christ;
Who suffered for our salvation;
descended into hell;
rose again the third day from the dead.
He ascended into heaven;
he sits at the right hand of the Father, God Almighty,
from whence he will come to judge the living and the dead.
At whose coming all men will rise again with their bodies
and will give an account of their own works.
And they that have done good will go into life everlasting;
and they that have done evil,
into everlasting fire.
This is the catholic faith which
except a man believe faithfully and firmly, he cannot be saved.

Luther was a womanizer and a drunk. His actions did lead to reforms in the RCC so there's no reason he couldn't have come back. I mean if something is wrong you try to fix it. If it fixes why still leave? He had other fish to fry.

Episcopalianism was founded by a lusty king who beheaded his wives.

Can you provide any original sources that document that that Luther was a womanizer or a drunk? Luther had plenty of faults but these weren't among them that I have ever heard.

The chief disagreement of Lutherans with the teaching of the Roman Catholics is justification by faith. That has never been resolved. One branch of the Lutherans tried to patch up that disagreement around 8 to 10 years ago and Rome unexpectedly pulled out of the agreement at the last minute.

As a cafeteria Catholic, an idea that didn't even exist until more than 400 years after Luther was dead, you are hardly in position to tell him what church body he should be affiliated with.

And as far as your attack on the Episcopalians goes, suffice it to say that you should not attempt to discredit other expressions of the Christian faith on the basis of the character of their leaders unless you are willing and prepared to defend the record of all the popes throughout the ages.

I mean, even from a technical perspective... a high percentage of those who grow up take their parent's religion out of sheer habit or tradition (or brainwashing, which is most likely IMO). if a polygamist mormon has four wives and 5 kids per wife, aside from having to be ridiculously wealthy, he'd be putting 20 kids into the religion lotto for the next generation. by any reasonable guesstimate, roughly 16 of the kids will take up mormonism. let's say of the 20 kids, 12 are girls and 8 are boys. of those 8 boys, 6 are mormon. they each have four wives, and 20 kids per. 10 of the girls go on to be mormon wives (hopefully for guys other than their brothers), each has five kids per. so he'd have (through his actions) put 170 kids who will more than likely be mormons via his mormon kids. let's say 140 of those kids go mormon, you can see how very quickly it would increase (absolutely beyond expondential).

I've never attended church service.

I've been in a church maybe 5 times my entire life. all weddings, and all withing the last 10 years.

I believe there is a God. There is an ultimate power that is above all.

However most of the stories in the bible are bull. Just about all of them are.

Explain ? Which ones ? Which story, stories ?

I go to church every now and again. I think they have great communities and are good for reflection. I am not really a true believer though.

Why do you go ?

Do you go for show ? As if you are trying to impress someone or show them a side of you that you want seen ?

Playing church or just looking to see if there is something to it ?

Show? No.

I enjoy it. It is good for a time for reflection and I meet and converse with interesting people. I went along with a girl I dated for a long time because it was important to her for me but didn't go screaming or kicking or anything.

I think it is good but again, I am just not much of a true believer. I got positive things out of my church visits.

OK, just wondering. It's good that you have an overall view of it and enjoyed it, good that you felt something positive.

More visits would be a good thing. I 'll leave that up to you since all must work out their own salvation.

I wish you well, even though we do not see eye o eye all the time.

BTW, I like the tone down Zach much better than the one always on the attack .;)

That video is awesome on so many different levels... I only wish I had 1/10th the cool that guitar player has!!!

We are the band that plays for the Contemporary Service so we have a minimum to none of the "goony-goo-goo composition to the constipated "praise" looks on the singers faces". :)

This is a song we will be playing on Sunday:

The funny thing is I went from an Industrial band playing in Clubs in front of Goth kids to playing in the Praise Band in front of the Congregation...

Question and you don't have to answer. Not talking shit to you, I'm curious: what do you mean when you say "church I'm currently being forced (or made) to attend"? (sorry if quote not exact)

I live in a new house in a shitty neigborhood that is owned by member of one of the Central Ave churches.

Rent is cheap and utilities are paid, and I'm staying there while I look for work and then get my own place.

The trade-off is that I have to attend 2 services on Sunday and a service on Wednesday night.
And...you have to stand up for 45 fucking minutes while the house band sings it's lame-assed Praise and Worship set.
The Preacher is good at least...

Hooooooooooly shit.

This should be in a thread. Start a thread about it, chronicle your torture, detail us on the house and neighborhood, the other members of the church.

Got it, thanks. Sounds like you are doing what it takes to get by and sometimes that's all we can do.
Good luck in your job search. Have you looked at Grand Canyon University? They are hiring (though I don't know what kind of work you do)

Oh there's a whole chronicle on the way, I'm just waiting until I'm gainfully employed before I submit it to the Planet.

Well...

Ideally, I'd like to go back to Municipal Work( 7 years with KCMO Water Dept. )but the City(Phoenix)is pretty much dead as you well know. I'm signed up with all State, County, and local Municipal job alerts/emails( City of Mesa/Tempe etc. )

So that leaves Land Surveying, Drafting, and my Clerical/Front Office skills. And I'm pretty much concentrating on office work because it seems to be the most available.

And, I applied for a Clerical gig at Grand Canyon College today, so thanks.
