Kansas recruit Josh Selby warms up prior to the start of the Jordan Brand Classic Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Madison Square Garden.

Kansas University newcomer Josh Selby, a 6-foot-3 guard from Lake Clifton High in Baltimore, arrived on campus Tuesday and reported that he has a broken left hand.

"I was just playing pick-up a while ago and I just found out it was broken," Selby said. "You know when you're playing, you're going on adrenaline so I didn't really notice."

Selby, the No. 1 overall ranked player in the nation, according to Rivals.com, is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks. In four weeks he will remove the cast that covers most of his left hand and stretches up his forearm. After that he'll have two weeks of rehab and will be kept out of all basketball activities until that time.

So what will he do during the next month and a half?
"Keep conditioning and work on my body," he said.

Last month, Selby suffered an injury to his right hand that required nine stitches. That didn't rattle him much and he doesn't expect his latest injury to bring him down either.

"I was always told, 'If you're hurt, you can still play," he said. "The only time you really can't play is when you're dead.'"

KU coach Bill Self has called Selby the most highly-touted recruit he ever has landed. The dynamic combo guard earned McDonald's All-American and Jordan Brand All-American honors this year and is expected to compete for a starting spot right away.

Despite the minor setback, Selby told reporters that he was thrilled to be in Lawrence.

"I'm very excited to be here at Kansas," Selby said. "They have a great coaching staff, a great group of guys and a winning history."
