I've been thinking about turning an old desktop into a media server so that I can stream movies and music through my PS3 (or 360). Any advice on software (TVersity, PlayOn, etc)? It's also extremely loud, so I want to throw it in the basement. Any recommendations on wireless network cards?

Any general advice or links would be much appreciated. Or if you just want to post the specs of your media server, that would be awesome too.

Thanks in advance!

If it's a dinosaur, go for a USB wifi?

Just buy a WD Live. It's so much easier and better.

Do you plan to stream HD? I so wifi and even 100Mb/s ethernet probably won't cut it.

If you're looking for a media center to run on an old machine, I'd look into XBMC.

Honestly, I'm still kind of trying to figure out what I can do with a media server. Right now, I have some TV shows in AVI format that I want to be able to play through the PS3 or 360. I'd also like to be able to access my entire MP3 collection. And if I could access Hulu without having to go to my PC, that would be even better.

This!

There's an offshoot of XBMC called Plex, that is the absolute shit for a media center. You can get an old Mac Mini and load Plex on it, and it makes a very nice little media center for cheap....
