Godzilla stomping back to theaters via Legendary (http://www.heatvisionblog.com/2010/03/godzilla-stomping-back-to-theaters-legendary-toho.html)

By Ace Fernandez
Well, well, well ... look who's getting back in fighting shape.

Everyone's favorite gigantic, havoc-wreaking lizard, Godzilla, is on his way back to the big screen via Legendary Pictures, which has acquired the rights to develop and produce a new feature based on the iconic Toho Co. character. Warner Bros. will co-produce, co-finance and distribute through its deal with Legendary, and Toho will roll out the film in Japan.

Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers are also producing; Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira and Doug Davison will be executive producers on the project.

The last major Godzilla outing, an American, New York-set version from Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, grossed $376 million worldwide in 1998 despite fielding equally major criticism. Toho quickly produced "Godzilla 2000," in which the big beast took on an evil UFO, the following year.

But the Godzilla franchise juggernaut has survived decades of permutations (he first appeared in 1954), dozens of films, books, video games and merchandising tie-ins and seems perpetually ready to rear up again for new audiences.

The new film is shooting for a 2012 release.

"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," said Thomas Tull, chairman and CEO of Legendary. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop culturally relevant for as long as it has."

Added Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, "Godzilla is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which Warner Bros. and our partners at Legendary are best known."

The two companies have partnered on such global properties as "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight," "Superman Returns" and "The Hangover," which have grossed more than $2 billion worldwide. Together, they have a remake of "Clash of the Titans" stomping into theaters Friday.

This.

Plus, the American Godzilla was a huge pussy.

If they're smart, they'll just remake the original Godzilla, or remake one of the classics like Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, or Godzilla vs King Ghidra. Those would rock with 2010 effects.

If you're going to get campy, cheesy CGI, and horrible dialogue you might as well go go Godzilla.

Godzilla Unleashed By Warner Bros For May 16, 2014 (http://www.deadline.com/2012/09/godzilla-unleased-by-warner-bros-for-may-16-2014/)
By MIKE FLEMING Thursday September 13, 2012 @ 6:33pm PDT

BREAKING: Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures have set their reboot on the Godzilla franchise for May 16, 2014. And it will be in 3D. The move was made by studio domestic distribution president Dan Fellman international distribution president Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, along with Legendary Pictures. The film got a rousing reception at Comic-Con in San Diego over the summer.

The Gareth Edwards-directed film is being made in partnership with rights owner Toho. Godzilla has appeared in more than 25 films, multiple television programs, video games and book series. Legendary, which has been developing the project, and its partner Warner Bros. will return the character to its epic roots with a gritty, realistic actioner. The project will fall under Legendary’s overall agreement with Warner Bros. Warner Bros will release it worldwide except in Japan, where Toho will release it.

Edwards previously directed Monsters, and here will be helming a script by David Callaham (The Expendables films), David S. Goyer (the Dark Knight trilogy) and Max Borenstein (The Seventh Son). Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce, along with Roy Lee, Dan Lin and Brian Rogers. Alex Garcia and Patricia Whitcher will serve as executive producers alongside Doug Davison, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira.

1) Let Trey and Matt from South Park write and direct it

2) Have all actors, locations, and Godzilla be puppets - as they did Team America

3) Let Trey do all the Kim Jong-Ill type of voices

Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston circling 'Godzilla' (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118065783/)
Legendary reboot awaiting script revision; Gareth Edwards to helm
By JUSTIN KROLL
While Legendary Pictures awaits a Frank Darabont rewrite on its "Godzilla" script, the studio continues to assemble its cast, entering talks with Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston to co-star.
Aaron Johnson is also in talks. Sources stress that no deals will be done until the finished script materializes.

Gareth Edwards is directing with Warner Bros. distributing. Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce along with Mary Parent, who helped produce "Pacific Rim" for Legendary.

Character descriptions, along with other plot details, are under wraps for now.

Pic will bow May 16, 2014, with production expected to start next month. Awaiting a rewrite, Legendary found it important to lock in its leads to make its March start time.

Best known for her breakout role in the 2011 Sundance pic "Martha Marcy May Marlene," the Gersh-repped Olsen has largely stuck to her indie roots with roles in "Kill Your Darlings" and "Liberal Arts." She does have FilmDistrict's remake of "Oldboy" set to bow later this year, but "Godzilla" would mark her first tentpole feature.

Olsen had been on the lookout for a franchise pic with Paramount showing interest for her on "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" reboot and testing for "Captain America: Winter Soldier," for a role that eventually went to Emily VanCamp.

With "Breaking Bad" going into its final season, Cranston's schedule should be opening up for more film roles. The UTA-repped actor was able to squeeze in Sony's "Total Recall" and Warner Bros.' "Argo" while also filming a 16-episode season of the AMC show.

Not really. It's that horror and Sci-fi have stigmas so horror and sci-fi movies are categorized differently if the studios think it has potential.

I mean the highest grossing movie of all time is just a sci-fi action movie, and it wasn't released that long ago.

Sounds like we might get to see what the new Godzilla looks like tomorrow...maybe.

http://www.godzilla-movies.com/news/988

Godzilla (2014) has officially wrapped up filming as of yesterday and director Gareth Edwards and company flew straight from the final shoot to San Diego Comic-Con last night in time to prepare for tomorrow's BIG Godzilla reveal!

So what can we expect from Legendary tomorrow in Hall H for their Godzilla reveal? Well, sources claim that the studio is planning to reveal what their new Godzilla looks like in some kind of video - official trailer or no. Attendees of the Godzilla Encounter got a sneak peak at the new King, via a CGI simulator (NOT a clip from the movie), which shows a portion of Godzilla's face as he looks into a window (which you're pretending to stand behind). Deadline managed to snap a pic of this simulator, and even though the quality isn't that great, you can still make out Godzilla's glowing red eyes!

Also, in Legendary's Godzilla Encounter, they had a number of Godzilla models and heads on display behind glass. Now, it's important to note that these are NOT models of the new Godzilla. The new Godzilla model was apparently under a black cloth, with the id card reading "Legendary's GODZILLA" or something to that effect. So, no one has really seen what the new Godzilla looks like in full. But below are a couple images of those Godzilla models which were on display, courtesy of Collider.com:

Sites reporting that any of the above images are of the new Godzilla are simply wrong. Legendary has kept a tight lip on their design for the new Godzilla, and will remain to do so until their reveal tomorrow afternoon in Hall H. Whether or not this leaks online or is publicly available, has yet to be seen. But from accounts of those visiting the Godzilla Encounter in San Diego, Godzilla looks like Godzilla. No mutant Iguanas this time.

So, with filming now complete, the post-production can take flight, and expect the viral marketing campaign to pick up steam as well. For those attending Comic-Con this year, don't miss Legendary's presentation in Hall H between 10:45am and 1:15pm tomorrow!

We have a release date!!!

http://movies.mxdwn.com/news/3-d-monster-godzilla-roars-into-theaters-may-16-2014/

Godzilla, the instantly recognizable, radioactive, B-movie monster with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, will be 60 years old when he stomps into theaters in May of 2014. Based on the iconic Japanese film series, Godzilla is being directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters) and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass, Anna Karenina), Elizabeth Olsen (Silent House) and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) .

Godzilla has been a culturally relevant anti-hero since he first premiered as Ishiro Honda’s Gojira in 1954. Inspired by the success of King Kong, and reeling from the Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Godzilla was meant to be a mutant force of nature, the result of humanity’s scientific arrogance. Born from the sea, half dinosaur, half gorilla, Godzilla is immune to heavy voltages of electrical power, crushes trains with his feet, has an atomic beam that fires from his mouth, a massive roar that can tumble buildings (an effect originally created by rubbing sandpaper over leather gloves), and brings home the message: when you mess with nature, nature always wins.

The final shooting script by Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile, The Majestic) has added two additional monsters to help Godzilla kick butt and take names. The film has a gritty, serious nature, going back to his roots, but has added an extra dimension of an emotional character storyline. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is a young U.S. Marine trying to save his wife (Elizabeth Olsen, playing a nurse) and child. Brian Cranston plays a PHD. scientist who starts an investigation after he discovers a peculiar pattern on his sonar monitoring device in his Japanese lab. It isn’t long before all hell breaks loose. Juliette Binoche (Cosmopolis, Chocolat), David Strathairn (Linclon), and Ken Watanabe (Batman Begins, Inception) also star.

Five time Oscar nominee Alexandre Desplat (Argo, The Queen, The King’s Speech, Harry Potter: The Deathly Hallows, Part 1 and Part 2) is composing the score.

Legendary Pictures is producing with Jon Jashni, Mary Parent, Brian Rogers and Thomas Tull. Get ready, May 16, 2014 is almost here!

Found this over on NeoGAF and it pretty much sums up what I think....

Pretty sure I said this before, but this movie really needs to end on a bleak note. No oxygen destroyer magic solution, no human ingenuity and courageous spirit triumphs in the end, no miracle saving throw for mankind, no scripted Hollywood ending; no, it needs to end with "WE ARE ALL 100% F*CKED." And let the sequel pick up several years or decades later, with what remains of humanity having learned to cope in a world ruled by the King of All Monsters.

Bad ass teaser...movie is shaping up to be awesome. My most anticipated 2014 movie by far...

That's the plan if this flick does well at the box office.

Might be the plan for this one...

In addition to the original movie, the Monsterland conceit of the 1968 Godzilla flick Destroy All Monsters also plays into Edwards' film, with its exploration of mankind having to deal with a reality full of huge, deadly behemoths — the director teases that there is more than just Godzilla smashing around.

"I've just got a secret fantasy — well, it's not very secret anymore — about living in a world where there's fantastical things like giant creatures and what it would really be like and trying to take it seriously," he says.

"And there's no bigger or better icon than Godzilla."

http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2013/12/09/godzilla-movie-sneak-peek/3911383/

I know they got the rights to Godzilla from Toho but did that include the other iconic monsters (Rodan, Mothera, etc) that had their own movies as well?...

And for fans that want to dig around:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/culturevideo/filmvideo/cinema-trailers/10509310/Godzilla-first-trailer-for-2014-film-released.html

Warner Brothers have created a complex network of clues in the run up to the trailer release. The site mutoresearch.net appears to be an access terminal and file database for an organisation called M.U.T.O.
Godzilla’s Twitter account has also been dropping some hints, linking readers to articles on the “cavernous wells Sima Humboldt and Sima Martel”, a Chinese sinkhole Chongquing and Turkmenistan’s “Door to Hell". The M.U.T.O vehicles were superimposed into each accompanying image.

Link to an article collecting most of the tidbits they want you to seek out:

I don't think so.

I spent way more time than I should admit to today looking on Bing/Google with different terms and there seems to be a huge segment of the G-Nerds talking about a kaiju named "Vishnu."

Apparently the Oppenheimer quote mentioning Vishnu is said over the clip of the "Water Bear" (a creature with multiple arms) during the leaked teaser.

The new poster gives us one of our best looks at Godzilla yet, though what's most striking isn't the creature's design (pretty traditional and awesome) but his sheer size. He towers like a lizardy colossus over his target city of San Francisco, easily twice as big as its tallest building, the Transamerica Pyramid — and, as that skyscraper stands at 48 floors, that makes Godzilla himself about 100 stories high.

Pacific Rim Godzilla crossover, do it Hollywood, minimum $800m box office if done decently.

Pacific Rim (which I loved) = Legendary's testing ground (effects wise) for Godzilla.

I predict I will revert back to my 9 year old self when I go see this movie.

Wow. Over/under on number of monsters in this film? Just Godzilla? The video shows a weird foot like thing stamping down on the ground that doesn't match a part of Godzilla.
edit: After rewatching it there are some strange things at 1:33 which looks like something with folded wings diving or falling into the ocean. 1:48 there is something knocking fighters from the sky, and the setting looks similar to the scene from 1:33. 2:07 is the weird foot thing, that looks like the edge of a bent wing, sort of how a bat walks on the ground.

I would enjoy if Ghidorah makes an appearance, though with an altered appearance deviating from the tree trunk form in the past. If there is another monster with wings, my money is on Rodan. The Destroyer had wings, but it basically an unknown, so highly doubtful.

Well, clearly other monsters are involved:

Synopsis[edit]

"An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence"—Legendary Pictures.[6]

In October 2013, toy and collectible web sites offering pre-orders of merchandise for the film revealed aspects of the other creatures to appear in the movie. The other creatures are, as a group, known as "Mutos", with some having the ability to fly and being multi-limbed.

In a January 2014 interview in Total Film magazine, it was revealed that Godzilla will be 350 feet (110 m) tall. According to special effect chief Jim Rygiel, the mechanics of Godzilla's fighting style is based on the study of animals, primarily bears and komodo dragons.

Hey! I have been keeping myself in the dark on this film up until today. Godzilla was a staple of my childhood, and there are many running jokes in our family about it. I have been trying to keep my expectations at the bottom of the barrel, but this trailer has forced me to raise them... hopefully not too high.

It sounds like it is going to be 2 new never before seen insect like (possibly mutating) monsters. Speculation is that they are man made in the Nevada desert since there are shots of Las Vegas being destroyed (which is a funny nod to disaster films destroying monuments... all of them are in LV).

Things I love about the upcoming movie after watching, and re-watching, the latest trailer;
1) Looks like they are tying this movie to Godzilla’s origin story from the very first Godzilla movie
2) The tone of the movie appears to be very somber and serious. Godzilla’s first movie had that same tone but after 50 years of camp it’s hard to remember that fact.

Dear God am I hyped to see this movie.

This genre will always lend itself to campiness, but it is good to see them moving back toward the tone of the original film. At that time it had good special effects, and a very serious tone and message to it.

This movie can be good if the acting is not over the top, and they let the message of the film speak for itself rather than ramming it down the audience's throat. Something else that may not bother some, but I hate revelations that come via exposition. Obviously some things should be revealed through dialogue, but I do not want this to be something like M. Night would do where the entire back story of the monsters are spoon fed to the audience via the mouth of some government official or scientist that could not possibly know everything he knows.

Let us fill in the blanks dammit!

Where did Godzilla come from? What is he?

The trailer says they awakened it and that the nuke tests in the 50's were actually attempts to kill it. So was it created by the radiation from Hiroshima and Nagasaki nearly a decade prior? What's he been doing in all the time between the bombings in the 50's and now? Are the other monsters' origins the same as Godzilla's? Are all of the monsters trying to destroy mankind? Is Godzilla an anti-hero of sorts?

The panoramic view of the skyline and the falling streaks?

I'm guessing that's just a widened shot of the paratroopers holding flares in their hands. I can't imagine why they'd be sending those guys into the city like that though. I guess the flares could be used to 1) make sure they don't hit each other on the way down, as the weather seemed a bit rainy/foggy/hazey or 2) mark the location of some sort of bomb strike..

Marking a bomb strike seems unlikely, though, given the fact that the troopers would be bombed themselves and also that Godzilla is fucking huge and likely wouldn't need any sort of marking in the first place.

Need 90s Godzilla movie suggestions

Heisei Series (1984 - 1995)
The Return of Godzilla (Godzilla 1985)
Godzilla vs. Biollante
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Godzilla vs. Mothra (Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth)
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II
Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (Godzilla vs. Destroyer)

Overall the Heisei series of Godzilla movies were good; better effects, solid storytelling and all 7 followed the same continuity.

Favorites of the series, in order;
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (Godzilla vs. Destroyer)
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II

Moving into the 2000's started the Millennium series. (2000 - 2004)
Godzilla 2000: Millennium (Godzilla 2000)
Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (Godzilla x Megaguirus)
Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (GMK)
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (Godzilla x Mechagodzilla)
Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (Godzilla x Mothra x Mechagodzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.)
Godzilla: Final Wars

While still solid movies there is no continuity with these films. Each one only ties to the very first (1954) Godzilla film, with the execption of Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (Godzilla x Mechagodzilla) & Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (Godzilla x Mothra x Mechagodzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.).

They mess with the whole Godzilla cannon in Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (GMK) but it's a good movie.

Favorites in the series, in order;
Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (Godzilla x Mechagodzilla)
Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (Godzilla x Mothra x Mechagodzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.)

From everything I've read they don't have the license to any of the toho characters other than Godzilla but do have some kind of deal in the works if a sequel happens.

The problem is it's sammitched' in between other nerd movies like Spiderman 2 and the new X-Men flick. X-Men will surely pull from the Godzilla numbers...

Was hoping the breakdown would explain 1:36 of the trailer but it didn't. Any thoughts?

Because of some of the quick cuts there's no guarantee that shot is directly related to the one that came before or after.

The only reason I'd see for guys parachuting in would be no safe place to land due to the destruction...

Anytime "Lux Aeterna" is used well in a film, I get hard. I love it.

Why did Edwards chose Hamburg for presenting 20 minutes from the hotly anticipated new movie Godzilla? Apparently not for marketing reasons. Gareth Edwards personally decided on Hamburg for nostalgic reasons, since his directorial debut Monsters premiered in Hamburg for the Fantasy Film Festival in 2010.
http://nerdbastards.com/2014/02/28/gareth-edwards-godzilla-reboot-roundup-new-production-stills-directors-breakdown-of-the-trailer-godzillas-first-20-minute-review/

We have seen these scenes, and talked to Gareth Edwards, and this is how much we can tell you: The initial scene takes place in a nuclear power station in Tokyo. Something goes wrong, and nuclear physicist Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) is able to avert a disaster. However, he has to deal with a personal loss. 15 years later we return to the same nuclear power station. This time the physicist in charge is Daisuke Serizawa (Ken Watanabe). Brody is sitting in an interrogation room.

He is accusing colleagues from the power station as well as the government to hush up something… The reason for the incident 15 years ago was not an earthquake. It was something much worse, something they created that is returning. Moreover, Brody wants his son Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-
Johnson) back. Bryan Cranston delivers these emotional scenes convincingly.

As we have already learned watching the trailers, Ford is part of a special unit of the army in charge of delivering a certain radioactive load by train that is supposed to have an effect on the monsters or the threat they are posing. We cannot tell you what effect, however, you have read this correctly: the monsters! plural! Edwards kindly asked us not to reveal what their appearance.

The skydiving sequence from the trailer was also shown in Hamburg, but with additional scenes and edited differently. The additional footage contained something enormous, or to put it in Gareth Edwards’ words: “When you want to watch a movie with a kaiju like Godzilla, you don’t just want to see it fighting humans.” Gareth Edwards also mentioned being a huge fan of Pacific Rim and Guillermo del Toro, who told Edwards how much he enjoyed Monsters. According to Edwards, they have met before and are exchanging ideas constantly. Just think of a crossover: Godzilla vs Gipsy Danger! The rumor mill starts here… Edwards stressed that his monsters will be more detailed than the ones in Pacific Rim thanks to Weta. Moreover, he put a lot of attention on not using impossible camera perspectives in the movie, i.e. “Each shot looks like there is a camera team on the ground, on a roof or filming from a plane. Since you can place CGI cameras anywhere, you tend to select impossible perspectives, and therefore quickly lose any tangible connection to the action,” said Edwards.

We were impressed by the gloomy and grim pictures. They reminded us a little of Cloverfield – only better. Seeing Godzilla, the monster itself, on the big screen in all its magnificence calms our skeptical Godzilla-fanboy hearts. “The mixture of the heads of a bear and a dog in connection with the majestic eyes of an eagle” so Edwards, that make up Godzilla’s head, come close to the original, and transports the monster to present day.

Production on the movie is in its final phase now, we were told. On Monday (March 3rd) sound recording will start, while the last CGI shots are being finished right now, and the 3D conversion
process is starting. The 3D trailer was also screened in Hamburg, and looked great even without or because it was lacking forced pop out effects. Fans can look forward to a dark and monstrous Godzilla without the silliness that plagued the version of Roland Emmerich’s ‘T-Rex-Godzilla’, which “was no real Godzilla” as Edwards pointed out.
