Army plans massive hybrid airships over Afghanistan in 2011

So what is the Army getting for its $517 million? Three of the ships, each of which can carry 2,500 pounds of people and cargo. They'll hover 20,000 feet above sea level and putter along at a top speed of about 34 miles per hour. They'll presumably be loaded up with all sorts of surveillance equipment that will allow them to get a bird's-eye view of huge areas of the country, peeking in on those Taliban warlords often.

So what do you think: are three of these airships worth over a half a billion dollars of taxpayer money?

I think it's a great use of taxpayer money.

SKYNET!

It must be fun to be a top military guy and come up with these ideas.

The Afghans probably don't have anything that can reach 20,000 feet, but at the same time it seems like it'd be useful to build about a thousand cheap decoys for $10,000 each just in case.

Great. A half billion dollar tool to only combat enemies that have the technological capabilities of 150 years ago.

Can a cheap biplane reach 20,000 feet?

The terrorists might buy a few biplanes and equip them with 50 cal machine guns and launch an offensive. I wonder how hard these are to take down?

They are (most likely) developing a physics package and if so, it will be ready in one to three years.

They also have attacked us before (see the hostage crisis), let alone through proxies.

Little Cessnas and stuff can get up over 10,000 feet, maybe higher, but even little Cessnas require a lot of infrastructure. I don't see the bad guys having that, or at least not after the first 15 minutes they're in the air.

I don't think Stingers and SA-7s and stuff can get that high, but I'm not sure.

Do you guys really think a badass starship like that doesn't have a force-field?

As long as it isn't rocked by a massive attack, the generators should stay online and the shields will be at 100%.

Well, not if the terrorists develop some sort of virus that shuts down it's shields. Then it's a sitting duck.

This is the perfect counter to Russia's new warship.

Also, Gochiefs, we told Iran to stop building Nuclear weapons two years ago, seeing as they have ignored us, it's pretty clear that they're too afraid of us.

Can you say border patrol?

Oh, by the way, 2500 lbs to 20,000 feet means the Special forces can be inserted above the Taliban holed up in the mountains.

I think the first place you will see these will be on the Iranian/Afghanistan border, with the "capabilities" pointed to Iran

Well, he does happen to be POTUS right now. Don't ask questions if you don't like honest answers.

That being said, I don't think it really matters to Iran who the POTUS is. They seem determined to take this path and have been. Previous administrations and the present are on record as stating that a nuclear-armed Iran is not acceptable.

I guess we'll find out what that means.

Well, here's what I think.

I think a member of Al Qaeda would easily take a single Marine in the Herolympics. Marines are pampered compared to these guys. And they have a lot more to lose.

When you have nothing to lose, you're dangerous.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go back to reading my Koran.
