He came to a hardwares store in Leavenworth when I was a real tiny kid. I may have been a toddler, either way I don't remember it. The story goes that my dad was holding me as Al was signing a ball for us. He hands me the ball and I threw it back at him. Luckily his reflexes were quick enough to nab it before it hit him in the face. I still have that ball somewhere. Anyway, I always remember the Mad Hungarian!

Actually, that's who I mean't.
How I got him confused with the AL umpire involved with the Jeffery Maier controversy is a mystery.
Probably has something to do with a baseball discussion on umpiring controveries on the radio recently here.

I'll go back and watch that Hagler/Hearns fight every 6 months or so. My friends and I sometimes use the expression, "The Hearns Smile" because of that fight. After Hagler hits him the one time Hearns sort of skips away and he's got that goofy kind of grin on his face. It's like the definition of being knocked onto queer street. Then Hagler just puts him away.
But yeah, I liked Hearns and Hagler both way better than Sugar Ray. Hearns had that interesting style of throwing his punches. He just couldn't handle Hagler.

A few good ones I haven't seen yet:
The Splendid Splinter -- Ted Williams
Teddy Ballgame -- Ted Williams
The Georgia Peach -- Ty Cobb
Ack Ack -- Tommy Heinsohn, who was known not to pass the ball back after getting it. ROFL
Cool Papa Bell
Pudge Fisk, who predates Pudge Rodriguez, thankyouverymuch
Three Fingers Brown -- Mordecai Brown
Chief -- Robert Parish
The Big Dipper -- Wilt Chamberlain (less used than the Stilt, of course)
Dr. J -- Julius Earving
Houdini of the Hardwood -- Cousy
Sparky Anderson
The Black Hole -- Kevin McHale -- see Heinsohn, above :D
Black Mamba -- Kobe
Double X -- Jimmy Foxx
Big Train -- Walter Johnson
Pistol Pete Maravich
Dizzy Dean
The Mistake by the Lake -- the stadium in Cleveland.
Iceman -- George Gervin
Killer Harmon Killebrew
Stan the Man Musial
The Flying Dutchman - Honus Wagner
By the way -- the nickname Lefty is not cool for anyone. It's just a description that is screamingly obvious. Not clever at all, and in fact has been used by like 100 pitchers over the years. So, yeah, that goes for Mr. Phil Mickelson too.
And I don't consider shortening a name to be much of a nickname -- Yaz for Carl Yastrzemski or Maz for Mazeroski. Yeah, it's a nickname, but it's not exactly brilliant...
