Giants, Red Sox Among Teams Eyeing Royals
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [June 28 at 9:37pm CST]
The Giants and Red Sox are among the teams eyeing Royals players, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star. Royals GM Dayton Moore is willing to listen to offers, but anticipating the return for the likes of David DeJesus and Jose Guillen is difficult, even for those in the team’s front office.

“I can tell you this much,” one Royals official told Dutton, “nobody is willing to take on payroll. But teams don’t want to deal prospects, either. So it makes it tough to do anything.”

Dutton reports that the Giants have interest in Guillen on the condition that the Royals absorb most of the $6.3MM or so remaining on his contract. Earlier today, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reported that the Royals are looking to move Guillen and are willing to pick up most of his salary in a trade, but Moore insists that the Royals are not actively looking to trade. Two rival scouts told Dutton that the Royals say they will take on a considerable amount of Guillen’s salary, so it doesn’t appear that Guillen would be tough to obtain.

If the Royals decide to start selling aggressively, they could discuss Mike Aviles and Willie Bloomquist with the Red Sox, who see the infielders as candidates to fill in while Dustin Pedroia's fractured left foot heals. The Red Sox are considering infielders and had some interest in Adam Everett before Pedroia's injury. One scout said Kyle Farnsworth could appeal to teams as a reliever if the Royals decide to part with him.

**It is important to note that this is not based on any rumor or hearsay, just some random thoughts.

In 2008, the Tampa Bay Rays were the feel good story of the year. They made it to the World Series and one of the main reasons was a 24 year old infielder turned CF, BJ Upton. People knew it could be coming in 2008, after Upton posted a 894 OPS in 2007. In 08, his power dropped, but he still posted a 273/383/401 mark, with 42 SB and outstanding defense in CF. Between 08 and 09 combined, he was nearly a 9 WAR player.

Fast forward to today. Between 09 and 10, Upton has been a disaster, posting a 235/314/379 line. His defense was still a plus last year, but this year he has a -8.4 UZR/150 in CF. Add in the fact that he is getting into altercations with other teammates and management, and it is perplexing to understand how he is keeping a job, other than the fact that people remember a couple of years ago and can still see the tools.

Now, consider the Rays current position. They have fallen back recently, but are still a championship contender. Unlike their divisional rivals, this is not a position the Rays can count on being in every year. Thus, when they are, they should try to take advantage. It has been a foregone conclusion that the Rays won't be able to keep Pena or Crawford next year. With their deep farm system they should still be good next year, but maybe not a true contender without those 2 players.

The Rays have Desmond Jennings, currently holding his own in AAA, ready to come up at any time. It is hard to argue that they Rays would be any worse with him in CF instead of Upton. Add in the fact that getting rid of Upton means at least 3 Million off the books next year, and moving him might also mean keeping Crawford around.

What do the Rays need? Well, they are fine on pitching, and have plenty of depth in the organization in that area. They haven't gotten anything out of their DH spot all year and haven't been real stable up the middle except for Brignac (and they could move Zobrist to 2B if they acquired a RF).

So how about the Royals try to acquire this still young (26 in August) fella? Sure, he is actually worse than Maier this year, but a gamble like this may be what we need. He is under team control through 2012, and shouldn't be due a huge arbitration raise over his 3 Million this year.

If the Royals had a guy who was a DH, but could play some RF a few days per week and had an 814 OPS this year, and they would agree to eat his salary, (we'll just leave his name out of it) would that be an attractive place to start? Sure, it might be a PR problem for the Rays, but who knows if they will be this good again if they loose Crawford and Pena, so they need to strike now. We would likely have to throw in a prospect in the David Lough range as well or maybe even a AAA Hawaiian monster that may never get a chance in KC. Or, you could trade DDJ, but that may make it even less likely to re-sign Crawford.

If you are the Rays, you suddenly get a lot better, and could possibly re-sign the face (along with Longo) of your franchise. For the Royals, it might be a gamble that never pays off, or you could get an 800 OPS gold glove CF. What do you all think?

Agreed. You think with the Upton blowup the Rays would ever consider it or is this just wishful thinking?

Yeah, I think they would consider a trade, but the proposed return for TB is very light. Upton has chronically underachieved, but he's a special talent.

Reds Not Discussing DeJesus With Royals
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [June 28 at 8:20pm CST]
A team insider tells John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer that the Reds are not discussing a David DeJesus trade with the Royals. The Reds appear content with Jonny Gomes, Jay Bruce and Drew Stubbs in their outfield and are not currently pursuing the hot-hitting DeJesus. Chris Heisey and Laynce Nix are also on the Reds' active roster and Gary Matthews Jr. is at Triple A.

The Red Sox and Giants are among the teams that have been linked to DeJesus, who is having a career year. The 30-year-old outfielder is hitting .331/.397/.481 and makes $4.7MM this year. DeJesus has about $2.5MM left on his 2010 contract, plus a $6MM option or a $500K buyout for 2011, so any team acquiring him would have to pay at least $3MM in salary and send prospects to the Royals. Unlike Jose Guillen, a player GM Dayton Moore would like to move, DeJesus should command valuable prospects in return.

That is what I was thinking and Guillen isn't worth too much if anything at all. I guess if Kila was in the deal it makes more sens.e but he doesnt really have a solid spot on the team if Guillen is there as well.

jbwm89
06-28-2010, 10:01 PM
I have no problem with us keeping DDJ because we are asking too much. If we are asking to much to get rid of Bloomy, Guillen, Pods or Farnsy then we are idiots.

CaliforniaChief
06-28-2010, 11:23 PM
That would just suck for Kila, who is longing for a chance to start...traded with Guillen and stuck behind him again. I want Kila to get his shot here...but I'm not too attached.
