On 810 they were playing some of their favorite patriotic songs and versions, and I thought it would be an interesting thread. So post away...

My top two;

America the Beautiful performed by Ray Charles (IMO, should be the national anthem).
Star Spangled Banner performed by Jimmy Hendrix

Not to completely hijack the thread, but does anyone actually like the Star Spangled Banner more than America the Beautiful?

To me, the Star Spangled Banner is a pretty mediocre anthem. It's really hard to remember, damn near impossible to sing well, and while it's got some good lines, overall it's just not that great a song. IMHO America the Beautiful is just a better song and would be a better anthem.

I know it's cheesy, but I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for "God Bless the USA". My dad was in Desert Storm when I was a kid. When his unit returned they had a big welcome party at the base. The planes landed and they lined up all the returning soldiers. Then they announced something like "Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome home the heroes of America" and went right into that song. I still well up on occasion when I hear it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toby_Keith

ABC invited Keith to sing "Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue" on a 2002 Fourth of July concert it was producing, then rescinded the invitation after host Peter Jennings heard the song and vetoed it. Jennings said the song “probably wouldn’t set the right tone.” "I find it interesting that he's not from the U.S.," Keith said of Jennings, who is Canadian. Ok. The reason I asked is that I got in the car around 2:30 yesterday, flipped to 810 while 610 was on a break, and got to listen to Keitzman rant about some insurance deal he's dealing with in his personal life. While talking about patriotic songs is a very much more worthwhile subject than bitching about how much moey, time and energy you're dealing with in your personal life, it just confirms what we've all known for quite some time - 810 sucks. Go to 980 if you want to talk about non-sports subjects. [/END OF RANT]

Again, Sully's thread is worthwhile and should be continued, and I don't mean to drop a poop sammich in the middle of it. Just wanted to get that off my chest.

Meh. ****ing English; like they're any better. German-Irish Americans FTW, Beeyatch!

William wasnt English. He was a True American.

Then one Turner, another Tammanyite, flung open his cloak and drew a Colt revolver. While trying to aim at Poole, he shot himself in the arm, screamed and fired again, hitting Poole’s leg. The Butcher fell, and Baker, placing his own pistol against Poole’s chest, shot him in the heart and abdomen. Poole scrambled to his feet, probably on pure adrenalin, and grabbed a carving knife from the bar. The Tammanyites fled as one. Poole screamed that he would tear Baker’s heart from his living flesh. As Poole’s legs gave out, he flung the knife at Baker, the blade quivering in the doorjamb as the Butcher collapsed to the floor.
Everyone surrendered except Baker, who hid in Jersey City until March 10, when he sailed on the brig Isabella Jewett for the Canary Islands. The authorities remained passive (after all, Baker was an ex-cop) until George Law, a wealthy Nativist, lent his clipper yacht Grapeshot to the police; they overhauled Baker about two hours off Teneriffe and brought him back in irons. Baker, Turner, Morrissey and McLaughlin were indicted and repeatedly tried for murder. The prosecution was abandoned only after the third hung jury.
Bill the Butcher lived fourteen days after the shooting. According to Asbury, his doctors found it unnatural that he should live so long after taking a bullet in the heart. Certainly he had time to compose his last words. He died with Hyer and other friends about his bed. They gave him a hero’s funeral, with thousands lining lower Broadway as a half-dozen brass bands and more than 5,000 men marched in his procession from Christopher St. to Whitehall St., whence his remains were ferried to Brooklyn. Asbury observed that new plays were hurriedly written and current productions revised so that as the curtain fell, the hero could drape himself in an American flag and cry out, "Good-bye, boys, I die a true American," to thunderous applause.
That, too, was all about money.

I'm ever upper class high society
God's gift to ballroom notoriety
I always fill my ballroom
the event is never small
the social pages say I've got
the biggest balls of all

(chorus)
oh, I've got big balls
I've got big balls
and they're such big balls
dirty big balls
and he's got big balls
and she's got big balls
but we've got the biggest balls of them all

and my balls are always bouncing
my ballroom always full
and everybody cums and cums again
if your name is on the guest list
no-one can take you higher
everybody says I've got
great balls of fire

(chorus)

some balls are held for charity
and some for fancy dress
but when they're held for pleasure
they're the balls that I like best
my balls are always bouncing
to the left and to the right
it's my belief that my big balls
should be held every night

Suite Madam Blue by Styx

Time after time I sit and I wait for your call
I know I'm a fool but what can I say
Whatever the price I'll pay for you, madame blue

Once long ago, a word from your lips
And the world turned around
But somehow you've changed, you're so far away
I long for the past and dream of the days
With you, madame blue

Suite madame blue, gaze in your looking glass
You're not a child anymore
Suite madame blue, the future is all but past
Dressed in your jewels, you made your own rules
You conquered the world and more, heaven's door, oh

America
America
America

Red white, and blue gaze in your looking glass
You're not a child anymore
Red, white, and blue the future is all but past
So lift up your heart, and make a new start
And lead us away from here

Let me reiterate:

Under the lights where we stand tall
Nobody touches us at all
Showdown, shootout, spread fear within, without

We're gonna take what's ours to have
Spread the word throughout the land
They say the bad guys wear black
We're tagged and can't turn back

You see us comin'
And you all together
Run for cover

We're takin over this town

Here we come reach for your gun
And you better listen well my friend, you see
It's been slow down below
Aimed at you we're the cowboys from hell

Deed is done, again we won
Ain't talking no tall tales friend cause
High noon, your doom
Comin' for you we're the cowboys from hell

Pillage the village, trash the scene
But better not take it out on me
'Cause a ghost town is found
Where your city used to be

So out of the darkness and into the light
Sparks fly everywhere in sight
From my double barrel, 12 gauge,
Can't lock me in your cage

You see us comin'
And you all together
Run for cover

We're takin over this town

Here we come reach for your gun
And you better listen well my friend, you see
It's been slow down below,
Aimed at you we're the cowboys from hell

Deed is done, again we won
Ain't talking no tall tales friend, cause
High noon, your doom
Comin' for you we're the cowboys from hell

(Solo)

Here we come reach for your gun
And you better listen well my friend, you see
It's been slow down below,
Aimed at you we're the cowboys from hell

Deed is done, again we won
Ain't talking no tall tales friend, cause
High noon, your doom
Comin' for you we're the cowboys from hell

Owwww, step aside for the Cowboys From Hell!

Stars and Stripes Forever, by John Phillip Souza. The Boston Pop's play it at the end of every concert. Good stuff.

THIS should be the national anthem.

No shit... and this should be the Preamble of our Constitution...

We the corporations of the United States, in order to form a more perfect business entity, establish monopolies, insure domestic tribulations, spend frivolously on defense, promote the general warfare, obliterate the environment, dumb down the people, secure the blessings of the federal reserve for ourselves and our stakeholders, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the Incorporated States of America. United States Inc.

Pink Houses - John Mellencamp.
For those who were and those who weren't there maybe one of the most electric moments at Arrowhead. It was the Chiefs/Giants game...first played after 9-11. The Chiefs played this on the PA and a fireman in the upper deck in the east end zone started waving a big American Flag. The place went nuts.
