View Full Version : Computers Help! Drowning in Pron Spam

Somehow I got on the random pron spam list (and no, I've never once clicked on any of it). In the beginning I'd notice that they seemed to target similar e-mail addresses, and that may still be the case, but they've really latched on to me now - I'm getting 20-30 of these fucking things a day, each one from a different bullshit e-mail address with subject lines broken up to avoid word filters (stuff like "Se eeJoa nsu ck onbi gslon gs"). I keep sending all of it to my spam box, every few days it'll dwindle down to a couple here and there, and then BOOM I'm back to getting 20 or 30.

You'd think the fact that I never even click on any of the links would give these shitbags a clue, but they are relentless, and I'm really getting sick of it. If there is anybody knowledgeable on how this shit works, I'd appreciate some advice. Is there any way to rid myself of this shit other than just getting a new e-mail address? If I do get a new e-mail address, is there any trick to setting it up so that I won't get targeted?

I've found that yahoo mail does a really good job of filtering. I still get some spam, but zero pron spam.

I have yahoo mail. I guess it's keeping me from getting 40 a day, but 20 are still getting through.

It might be time to just get a new email address, and NEVER SIGN UP FOR ANYTHING USING THAT ONE. Anytime you sign up for something or enter a contest or some shit, use your porn yahoo.

It would've been more believable if you'd started out, "I've got this friend, see, who has gotten lots of pron spam and, uh, he asked for help on how to remove it ..."

I forget what it is but there is a word you can add on to your email addy (IE addedword.youremailaddress@gmail.com) that doesn't change your address but it allows you to see who sent that email. It's kinda like marked bills. You can see who sent you that email because of that word you added onto your email. Might only work for gmail though.

Edit: http://www.dennisplucinik.com/blog/2007/09/03/use-gmail-to-find-out-whos-spamming-you/

Not sure if it will work for yahoo or not. Just for future reference.

Yeah, that's a gmail thing, but I guess it might work elsewhere. Basically, you just add + to the end of your gmail ID, and it will be delivered as usual. However, you can identify where the email was found by spammers that way. For example, I could do daface+pornsitex@chiefsplanet.com (since our mail is hosted by Google), then put a filter to delete anything from that address.

Whatever I might do in the future, it seems at this point my current e-mail address is fucked. I'm in the pron database and I don't think there's a number I can call to get myself deleted.

Maybe I'll try gmail - that sounds like a nice feature. Yahoo also has an upgraded e-mail service for $20 a year - does anybody have any experience with that? I has a feature that allows you to use surrogate e-mail addresses when signing up for things.

Does your yahoo account have a spam folder? I get a shit load of spam but gmail just puts it in the spam folder and I go empty it about every couple of weeks.

Yes, and I use it. The problem is with all the NEW shit from NEW e-mail addresses that come in constantly. They obviously have some random e-mail address generator. You block one, two more new ones get through.

I've been battling this for a few months. Before it was just a couple a day - no big deal. Now it's a big annoyance. And since it seems to be growing exponentially, God only knows how bad it will be next month.

Well, I've decided to just change my e-mail address. I've created a new one and will, after a few days, deactivate the old one. I'll check it from time to time to see if the fuckers stop once nothing goes through for a while.

What a pain in the ass.

Sign up for a domain name on a site like 1and1.com where you can purchase the URL for about $20 for three years. You can create email addresses thru that domain which are forwarded to you primary address.

Say for example your primary address is: frazod@gmail.com

You register: frazod.org

You can create and delete addresses as you need and everything will be forwarded to frazod@gmail.com.

Next time you have to sign up for something you use "me@frazod.org" as the email address. If anyone ever gets a hold of "me@frazod.org" and you start receiving spam you simply delete "me@frazod.org" and create "tim@frazod.org" and anyone who sends an email to that address gets an automated "invalid address" response. You don't even have to delete the address you can simply stop all email being sent there from being forwarded to your primary email.

It sounds like whoever your primary address is through at this point has a crappy spam filter. But anyway, that's the option I use and it's probably the most effective measure you can take. It's really easy to setup as well.

FYI you don't need to click on anything in the email, often opening one is all it takes as they bury code in them that tells them you opened it, verifying your address is legit.

Fuck, that might have done me in - I'd open them just to see if they were specifically addressed to me. At first they weren't, later they were.

Another mistake I won't make again.

And thanks for the post, Otter. If I have any more trouble I take that route next time. :thumb:

You don't have to go that far.... when you sign up for gmail, dieKUscum@gmail.com, die.KU.scum@gmail.com, and die.KUscum@gmail.com all go to the same place. When you sign up for something, you can add dots to your gmail address, then filter that address to go to your trash or junk mail. So, you basically give out dieKUscum@gmail.com to friends, and use die.KU.scum@gmail.com for any site you don't want to receive emails from.

The other thing I was thinking of... you can add a +something to your gmail address when you sign up for things, too, if you're the curious type.

Point your spam in another direction and not so much at your face.

Your getting a spam facial.

I like the idea of owning my own URL. Guess I should have thrown that in there as well.

In that respect, if I was going to be a fanboy of something, it would be Google... phone, email, chat, calendar, maps, iGoogle, Picasa, google.com as a search engine & sometimes a spell checker, etc (still use Firefox though). Yeah, if you ever need to know where I'm at or what I'm doing, ask Google, they'll know.
