alright, the heats are seeded (randomly, roughly even; as close as possible) and polls will be posted within the next hour or so.

here is the general structure: we start out with 128 villains of all types (movies and tv)

1st round: 16 heats of 8 (top 4 advance from each heat) (to 64 total)
2nd round 8 rounds of 8 (top 4 advance from each heat) (to 32 total)
3rd round: 4 rounds of 8 (top four advance) (to 16 total)
4th round: 8 rounds of 2 (one from each matchup advances to elite 8)
5th round: 4 rounds of 2 (one from each matchup advances to final 4)
6th round: 2 rounds of 2 (one from each matchup advances to final)
7th round: final.

alright, let the games begin!

they'll show up after heats 1-4 are done (or, rather, at some point tomorrow afternoon/evening). I'm staggering them so the front page isn't saturated with villainlympics threads.

that's quite a good idea. rep.

and yeah, bug, I have an issue with knowing who some of the villains are. I've checked some youtube clips, but it's hard to get the depth of villainy of some of them (who are quite revered by critics and movie-fans 'in the know) with a short youtube clip.

yeah--I really didn't think stay-puft would go on, he basically made it in as the 128th villain because it amused me (and there were no better options out there, sadly enough).

oh well--you're absolutely correct. tavington was pure freaking evil. he's more villainy than many of those who have gone on, but other than that (and people ignoring some of the older villains who truly were scary-evil), I can't complain so far.

it's essentially who you think are the best four villains.

however, people vote however they want to vote... if you choose to vote which four would win in a battle scenario, that's ok I guess.

I will be going with a model similar to the ncaa model: round one heat 1 and heat 16 combined into heat 1 for round 2, round one heat 2 and 15 for round two heat two, etc.

feel free to leave objections in the next 20 minutes while I do some of the legwork: I'll listen to any and all ideas for round two heats. frankly, this is the least labor intensive way of heats for the first few rounds. round one heats were random, and pretty much everybody who moved on from round one is worthy (leading to some possibly loaded heats).

comments?

So you are not reseeding after every round I take it.

through the first two rounds, no. starting in round three, they will be reseeded.

the first round wasn't technically seeded. I threw everybody into a giant pot (as it were) and the heats of 8 were completely random.

Ebolapox

what I WILL likely do is use the voting results for the first two heats to seed for the third round.

in other words: if darth vader gets 35/36 in round one (votes for/votes total) and 37/40, he'd have a total of 72/76. this would be put into a percentage of total votes. each of the 32 seeds going into round three would have a percentage, and be seeded into heats accordingly.

Ebolapox

IN THE EVENT OF ANY TIES (which appears likely in a few of the heats already)... only four from each heat will move on. if number four and five are tied, the tie will be broken by the percentage of votes they obtained relative to their heat in round one (highest moves on). should THAT be tied, it will be settled by a coinflip (if only two are tied) or by the highest number of total letters in the character's name combined with the total number of letters in the actor who played the character's name.

in other words (hypothetical)

batman (ledger): first round: 40/50 (80%)
batman (nicholson): first round: 80/100 (80%)

the joker (8 letters)+ heath andrew ledger (17)=25 (note, we go by their full name whenever possible)
the joker (8 letters)+ john joseph nicholson (19)=27

jack nicholson's joker would win in this instance.

before I get the inevitable question: I decided to skip the 32 options (eight villains with four options for each) due to the sheer time it would take to tabulate, let alone break ties. it would be a pain. sorry for the false advertisement and such.

I voted for him a few times, he was a great villain. that movie did, indeed, just suck. and I guess that makes me inferior to all the movie critics who were all over its balls. oh well.

I was a big fan, but I've been out of town. I'm bummed that he's out. The haircut alone should've gotten him a longer run.

Most people who have seen the movie would agree that he was sensational. However, NCFOM wasn't a blockbuster movie like a lot of these, and/or it hasn't been around very long, so not as many people have seen it as movies like Die Hard, Terminator, Star Wars, etc. Poor Old Anton was at a disadvantage simply due to lack of exposure, not lack of utter brutality.
