Overland Park police responded tonight to a possible bomb threat at the Ritz Charles, where Kris Kobach and Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio are holding a controversial immigration rally.

Police asked Overland Park fire officials be on standby around 7:30 p.m. in regard to a bomb threat, fire department spokesman Jason Rhodes said. They had not been called to assist, however, and would not be unless hazardous materials were involved, he said.

Multiple police crews were already stationed at the Ritz Charles for the 7 to 9 p.m. event due because they anticipated large crowds at Kobach’s “Illegal Means Illegal” rally, held as a fundraiser for his bid for Kansas Secretary of State.

A silent counter rally is simultaneously being held outside by immigrant rights advocates.

Kobach organizers said 1,000 people showed up to hear Kobach and Arpaio to discusses the problem of illegal immigration and the new Arizona law designed to fight it. Kobach, a law professor, helped craft the legislation.

Kobach’s address was briefly interrupted when authorities announced the discovery of the suspicious package. Arpaio and Kobach urged people to leave if they wanted to but most of the crowd stayed to listen.

About 200 people stood outside the Ritz Charles in silent protest of what they said was hateful rhetoric. Organizers of the protest said they intentionally stayed hundreds of feet away from the rally to avoid a confrontation.

Tonight’s rally was first scheduled to be held at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe before the university president canceled, fearing disruptions due to the heightened rhetoric and emotions around the issue.
