KU men’s basketball to play home-and-home with Ohio State starting in 2011
By Gary Bedore

Kansas University's men's basketball team will begin a two-year home-and-home series with Ohio State starting in the 2011-12 season, KU senior associate athletic director Larry Keating said Thursday.

The Buckeyes would play at KU in '11-12, with KU returning the game to Columbus, Ohio, the following season.

Keating said the signed contract hadn't been returned yet, but both schools had agreed to play. An OSU official told the Columbus Dispatch the series had been scheduled.

KU will be traveling to the Maui Invitational in 2011 and also will play at the University of Southern California. Keating said the Jayhawks likely would be looking for just one more marquee game that non-conference season, likely to be played in Allen Fieldhouse.

KU target Nino Jackson in no rush to pick

By Gary Bedore

Nino Jackson, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound junior shooting guard from Ardmore (Okla.) High School who recently was offered a basketball scholarship by Kansas University coach Bill Self, says he likely will wait until after the 2010-11 season before selecting a school.

“I talked to my parents and stuff, and they want to wait,” Jackson said Wednesday night in a phone interview.

Of the KU offer, Jackson, a long-time KU fan, said: “I was really happy and surprised. KU is at the top of my list.”

He said he has received heavy interest lately from KU, Oklahoma, Baylor and Texas. The No. 38-ranked player in the Class of 2012 also has heard from Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Oregon, Southern Methodist, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

H-O-R-S-E game publicized nationally: Sunflower Broadband Channel Six sports anchors Kevin Romary and Andrew Baker have received national publicity for their recent H-O-R-S-E contest with KU senior guard Brady Morningstar in KU’s practice facility.

“By far the best part of the video is Morningstar’s self-deprecating humor in reference to the missed free throw he took against Texas on national TV last season when the ball slipped out of his hands,” wrote Jeff Eisenberg of Yahoo! Sports. “Morningstar emulates the shot during the game of H-O-R-S-E, and this time it goes in.”

“Good work by the 6News guys for producing a fun video. And good work from Morningstar for being such a good sport,” Eisenberg wrote.

The video also appeared on ESPN’s College Basketball Nation Blog and independent basketball blog Rush the Court.

Most KU fans thought Jackson would instant commit when offered by KU. I'm a little disappointed by this. Still think he'll end up going to KU based on what I've read about him and how he grew up a Hawk. With him, Peters, and Ellis. I think all of those guys are AT LEAST 3 year players and are the perfect pieces for KU to maintain our long run of excellence. If we can mix in a couple Top 15 guys that would be perfect.

That must have been pretty sad that KSU had one of the best seasons in their history only to lose to KU three times in one season, and watch KU dominate once again and win the conference by four games. Ouch.

I know, right? I mean KU fans are the easiest to make fun of, because they ignore all facts and just assume no one notices how horrible of a year the University of Kansas as a whole had last year. I mean, I guess I'd feel bad too if the team I liked tricked me into waiting for history to happen this long. I mean the fight between the football and basketball team, the football team being exposed for being completely awful, the AD throwing the head coach under the bus. M Morris driving around stolen cars while on his way to perform statutory rape of some sort, morningstar getting arrested (what kind of retard gets arrested in lawrence, the cops don't care what the basketball team does in lawrence.) for DUI, hiring a coach that is obviously way over his head and doesn't know how to coach the retards that Mangino brought in, another choke job by the basketball team, M. Little crying like a little girl that lost her dolly after losing to a small school in IOWA, AD again throwing other KU employees under the bus for a ticket scandal that he obviously had something to do with (don't be naive). Sherron collins (aka "the best player in the history of basketball!) going undrafted. Pretty comical from my end that the entire fanbase hasn't killed themselves. . .wait. . .strike that. That the entire fan base of morons that didn't know football even existed pre 2007, and just recently found out that it again does not exist, hasn't found a new bandwagon to jump on.

Walk-ons C.J. Henry, Chase Buford leave KU basketball team

By J-W Staff Reports

Kansas guard C.J. Henry drives past Central Arkansas guard Imad Qahwash during the first half, Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009 at Allen Fieldhouse.

Kansas walk-ons C.J. Henry and Chase Buford have left the KU men's basketball team, coach Bill Self announced Wednesday.
Buford will remain a student at KU, while Henry will pursue his basketball career elsewhere.

Henry, a red-shirt freshman last season, played in 13 games, averaging 5.6 minutes and 3.1 points.
“C.J. informed us toward the end of July that he was going to look into other options to further his basketball career,” Self said in a release. “At this date, I do not know if anything has officially been decided on what he will be doing or where he will be attending, but he has decided to leave KU.
"It’s a decision I totally respect. The Henrys have been Jayhawks for many, many years and certainly Xavier (Henry) had an outstanding freshman campaign. C.J. battled injuries all year long but has been healthy this past spring and summer. He is a good player. He was definitely in the mix for being a major contributor on the court this season but we respect his desires and certainly wish him the best. I know he will be successful wherever he goes.”
Buford was a three-year player for KU. He appeared in 36 games in his career, averaging 1.7 minutes and 0.3 points.
“We, as coaches, have thoroughly enjoyed having Chase as a member of our program the last three years,” Self said. “I totally understand — this being his senior year and the time commitment involved — that he wants to pursue some other interests and also enjoy being a normal college student for his final campaign. He’ll always be a Jayhawk. He will always be part of our program but certainly we respect the fact that he has other interests and wish him the very best.”

Sherron Collins has been signed to the Charlotte Bobcats only because the greatest player in the history of the sport (Michael Jordan) went out of his way to sign him.

SC was probably my 152nd favorite player in KU history so I don't really care.

Oh, and KU football dominates K State. Always has, always will. Has a better historical player (Gale Sayers) and has tremendously more success than KSU in bowl games in the last decade.

2000's... decade of dominance?

He's the only owner out there that intentionally tries to pay rookies less money than any other team. Remember, in the NBA the salary based on what pick you are is much more structured. He didn't want to go to begin with. I'm sure it was his daddy who made the decision. If you saw his presser, the dude was bawling like 14 year old girl during Titanic. If that didn't give you a clue about what he wanted, nothing else will.

He went so far out of his way that he didn't want to draft him. Must think he's the greatest of all time.

Also, since the day I was born, K-State leads the series 14-8-1.

WTF does Gayle Sayers have to do with anything?

Oh, and KU football always has, and always will dominate K-State football?

I posted that because you said KU has and always will own K-State in football. I proved that in the 90's (which would be included in the "has" portion) that KU did not own k-state. Yeah, let's argue the semantics of "always". Technically "always" means 100% of the time, however, when people say "always", it often means "the vast majority of the time". 70% of the time can be considered to be the "vast majority" by some. So please, just kindly shut the fuck up. "Your" school is the most inept D1 AD around.

Some good news after that turd yesterday.

Selby all set?
POSTED BY MATT SCOTT ON SEPTEMBER - 5 - 2010EMAIL AUTHOR
Kansas fans couldn’t hide their excitement when PG, Josh Selby, (Video) announced his intentions to attend the University of Kansas on live television during the first half of the Jordan Brands Classic in New York City. Selby, who some consider to be the top player in the 2010 class, is just the type of difference-maker the Jayhawks need to be considered a title contender after losing star players, Sherron Collins, Xavier Henry and Cole Aldrich after last season.
The excitement that resulted from Selby’s announcement (Crazy fan reaction) back in April quickly turned to worry shortly before classes began at Kansas in late August after it became known that the NCAA still needed to clear Selby to attend and play at Kansas. After a few weeks of waiting for news on Selby’s eligibility, the end is finally here.
Multiple sources have informed TheShiver.com that Josh Selby has been cleared by the NCAA, and it could be announced as early as Tuesday.
TheShiver.com will update this story as it continues to develop.

Kansas University freshman Josh Selby talks with media members in this June 8, 2010 file photo, a day after his arrival in Lawrence. Selby will attend class Tuesday, but he still has not been cleared by the NCAA to play at KU.

Kansas University freshman basketball point guard Josh Selby will be attending class on Tuesday but has not yet been cleared to participate during the 2010-11 basketball season, coach Bill Self confirmed to the Journal-World on Sunday afternoon.

Self would not expand on the situation. The NCAA has been looking into Selby's relationship with Robert Frazier, the business manager of NBA player Carmelo Anthony, though there also is the possibility that Selby has not been given the OK academically by the NCAA after attending three different high schools.

The NCAA is apparently letting Selby in class at this late date while still looking into his eligibility.

Self would not comment on any aspect of the situation, only stressing that Selby would be in class Tuesday for the first time this school year.

Withey out 4-6 weeks with broken foot

Kansas sophomore center Jeff Withey will miss the next four to six weeks after breaking his foot, KU coach Bill Self announced Friday.

“Jeff broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during individual workouts earlier this week,” Self said in a release. “He had surgery and doctors expect a full recovery in four to six weeks. We do not want to bring Jeff back too quickly."

Withey, who averaged 1.3 points and 1.4 rebounds in 15 games last year for KU, missed three weeks during the summer last year because of a severly sprained right thumb (http://www2.kusports.com/news/2009/jul/02/gary/) and also was out more than a month in the fall after suffering a stress fracture in his right knee (http://www2.kusports.com/news/2009/oct/22/withey-out-4-6-weeks-knee-injury/).

Tyrel Reed actually does look like he has the highest vertical on the team according to those videos. He is said to have a 42'' vertical leap and the highest on the team. Wish he plays more above the rim this year instead of only being a three point specialist. But either way, we are going to have alot of slashers this year.

A lot of KU fans talked shit on Clemente when he was playing (overrated, cry-baby, streaky shooter that can kill his team on off-nights), and suddenly losing him is the main reason they are going to suck.

just like every team every year, guys leave and other guys step up.

they have a good coach. I'm not saying they will make the F4, but there aren't a lot of teams with their resume when it comes to preseason rankings.

We'll see, man. Their resume includes 9 losses (3 of those to us). Yeah, they had a nice run in the tourney but that team wasn't even close to being as good as us. Yeah, we lost Sherron and Cole but Marcus took another quantum leap and we're going to be much more athletic and faster.

I flat out don't care. #3 is great and all, but preseason rankings and predictions are meaningless.

However, I don't mind the debate over whether or not if the Cats should be ranked #3 in the nation. It was only 5 years ago I was hoping, praying that a Jim Wooldridge coached team could somehow get on the NCAA bubble. It kind of puts things in to perspective.

That does kind of put things in perspective. Kind of like how watching Turner Gill's team play makes me realize Fatgino wasn't all that bad.

Really though, having a strong, sustainable KSU team (I think Martin can keep things going) is good for business. It will blow ass each and every time KSU is victorious, but it will help keep our guys focused and on top of our game. And any national pub for the midwest is good for everybody. Unless Baylor starts killing kids again. We don't need that kind of publicity.

The NCAA is not going to hurry up for anyone,” Torre said.

The worst-case scenario for the Jayhawks may be a Renardo Sidney-esque wait before an NCAA ruling comes down. Sidney, a sophomore power forward for Mississippi State, sat until March 5 while the NCAA investigated his case, before it finally ruled that he had to sit out the rest of the season and the first nine games of this year.

Renardo Sidney's family was like traveling around the country staying in homes worth millions and basically getting money from Reebok and other sponsors because his dad was running a semi-pro team.

Crazy situation.

I think Selby may have to sit a few games but he'll be playing when it matters.

There was quote yesterday from Bill Self that he doesn't expect a decision before the regular season starts. That is very troublesome. I used to be on the same boat as you but he's not cleared by Nov 1st like John Wall I am going to start having my doubts.

I mean Lance Stephenson was even cleared November 6th and he had like his own MTV show and online website dedicated to his life or some shit.

Oh I think he's sitting most def.

But it's not like the kid has been playing basketball as a professional.

He's had contact with an agent that is still a very grey area in the eyes of fans, the media and the ncaa.

I think they will set an example of him and suspend him from playing a few games.

There isn't a chance he doesn't get ruled eligible though. Selby has been under the watch of so many people since he was like 13 that if there were any non-amateur issues to worry about they would have been exposed by now.

As far as I know what he's done isn't that different from what Brandon Rush did. I think the ncaa wants to put an end to those types of relationships with players and "sponsors, agents, handlers, etc..." but not to the point where they don't let him play at all..

OTC: KU Cornerback Calls Kansas “A Basketball School”

greg
“We expect the fans to leave. It’s a basketball school. We expect the fans to leave when we’re not doing well.”
Chris Harris, KU senior cornerback, when asked about the KU fans’ premature exit from the stands at KU’s Memorial Stadium during the second half of the Texas A&M game, 610 AM
GH: Whoa. When I heard Josh Klingler play this sound bite from the KU senior I hit the brakes in my pick-up truck and pulled over. Klingler, knowing good radio when he hears it, obliged and replayed the audio a number of times on Bob Fescoe’s Wednesday morning show. Turner Gill’s mission is to build a football program that can attract the kind of talent he needs to compete in the new Big 12. Having your senior cornerback telling recruits he plays at a “basketball school” is not the best way to accomplish that goal.

“Mangino always said, ‘They’re gonna be here when we win and they’re going to be gone when we lose.’ It’s something he kinda prepared us for really.”
Chris Harris, on the fickle nature of Kansas football fans, 610 AM
GH: This isn’t Jack Harry blasting the Kansas fan base. This is a current senior player relating what the former KU head coach told his Jayhawks about their fans. I don’t think fans should be expected to support non-competitive football teams – especially when gobs of donor money have been spent on facilities and the coaching staff. But you would like to think the KU football program and their fans have a better relationship than the one Harris paints for us.

“We worked very hard to stop this nonsense that (KU) is just a basketball school. We’ve got the facilities in place! Stop saying it’s a basketball school! That’s a crutch!”
Bob Fescoe, 610 AM
GH: Is it a crutch if it’s accurate? Spending money does not make you a winner or even competitive. Check with our federal government.

“It’s really strange to see this midway through season one (of Gill’s tenure at Kansas).”
Josh Klingler, on the KU football program losing favor with their fan base so quickly, 610 AM
GH: College athletics has brought on this kind of sudden death to its fans and their support. Kansas has been a leader in bilking their alums and fans for financial donations while the basketball and football programs were successful. Once things go south, that same fan gets plenty pissed plenty fast. If Bill Self ever starts the season 4-4 in conference play, the state of Kansas’ economy may collapse.

“It’s hard to feel sorry for someone who is making $2 million a year, but I am quite sure (Gill) had no idea of the athletic department issues that were going on. I’m talking about ticket scandals and those kinds of things.”
Todd Leabo, 810 AM
GH: Heck, KU’s Chancellor and Lew Perkins both pleaded ignorance to all the shenanigans going on inside the KU athletic department. Gill had no idea what he was getting into. But Kansas should have done a better job of discovering what they were getting in Gill. If I knew, why didn’t they?

“I’m gonna be the last guy to give up on Turner Gill. I may at some point. But not yet.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: I’m sure Turner finds that very reassuring.

“As far as hiring coaches, Turner Gill will be Lew Perkin’s legacy.”
Kevin Kietzman, 810 AM
GH: Sounds like KK may have already given up.

“Kansas fans need to go back and remember what it was like when they were changing coaches every four or five years in the past. The last 20 years there have been a lot of coaches who have gone through Kansas. You’ve got to give Turner Gill time. You’ve got to be patient.”
Gary Barnett, former Colorado head coach and current TV college analyst, 810 AM
GH: Those memories are what’s fueling the Kansas fans’ panic. Gill looks like he’s building a worse program than all those other clunkers combined.

“I’ve got to tell you, the second year (for a new head coach) is harder than the first year. Generally speaking, the second year is more difficult from my experience and watching guys around the country. That’s when guys have really struggled.”
Gary Barnett, 810 AM
GH: Gill has gone from a five-year contract to “give him at least three years” to “can he survive his first year?” If year two is worse than year one for Gill, he won’t get to spend a second Thanksgiving in Lawrence. And I’m not so sure Gill should buy a fresh turkey for this November’s feast.

“If the (Kansas) fan base is acting like this after year one, what are they going to act like after year two when it gets even tougher?”
Nate Bukaty, 810 AM
GH: Kind of like they did the first 110 years of football in Lawrence.

“You give (Gill) six, seven, eight years and you let him go.”
Steven St. John, also known as MU Rock, 810 AM

“I’ve been a Turner Gill supporter from the beginning. I’ll give him more than one season. The reason people liked the Turner Gill hire is the belief that he could recruit. I’ll remind you that this team lost seven conference games in a row last year before Turner Gill.”
Nick Wright, 610 AM
GH: Yes, Mangino lost 7 Big 12 games last season. But none were as embarrassing as every B12 loss Kansas has suffered under Gill. Losing is one thing. Getting blown out every Saturday is impossible to stomach for any fan base. The fact Gill was able to talk Blue Springs’ fabulous running back, Darrian Miller, into committing to Kansas is a minor miracle. If he can do that 20 times a recruiting season, maybe he can build a winning program.

Allen Fieldhouse sold out for 2010-11 season
By J-W Staff Reports

Allen Fieldhouse is sold out for the 2010-11 men's basketball season, KU officials said late Thursday afternoon.

A week ago, it was reported that about 500 season tickets were still available.

“We realized we had a real opportunity to capture new season ticket holders this year and our fans jumped at the chance,” said interim athletic director Sean Lester. “The fact that we had so many fans and donors order in the last week is a true testament to the tradition of Kansas basketball and the excitement surrounding this year’s team.”

Kansas Athletics is holding back a couple hundred tickets that will be sold on a single-game basis. Tickets are available at kutickets.com and 1-800-34-HAWKS.

“We appreciate the support of our great fans,” KU coach Bill Self said. “I think it’s terrific that new fans will have the opportunity to experience Allen Fieldhouse, the greatest venue in college basketball.”

The first exhibition game for the Jayhawks is 7 p.m. Tuesday versus Washburn.

Had a buddy of mine email me this the other day: If you were to form an NBA team consisting of the 12 former KU players currently playing in the league, could you win a title with them?

Hinrich, Chalmers, Collins, Rush, Henry, Wright, Collison, Aldrich, Gooden, Jackson, Arthur and Paul Pierce

My answer was that you couldn't. Even if you brought in Self (who coached 8 of these guys) to coach these guys. My opinion is that every NBA championship team almost exclusively (2004 Detroit the exception) of one Superstar and one near superstar with 5-6 role players. The only possible superstar on the KU list is PP, and he's past that part of his career.

Thoughts?

I'm not sure you could take the alumni from any college and have them win a title.

Look at the best players:

Kobe- HS
LeBron- HS
Garnett- HS
Dwight Howard - HS
Wade- Marquette
Durant - Texas
Pierce - Kansas
Gasol - ???
Westbrook -UCLA
Roy - Washington
Melo - Syracuse
Rose -Memphis

A KU team would have as good a chance as any college alumni team. It would be cool though, Imagine a "final four" played between nba players from KU, UNC, Duke, UConn??

Florida might contend for the best front court - Horford, Noah, David Lee, Maurice Speights, Udonis Haslem.

Thoughts?

We're missing a big man that can score. Gooden is good on the glass and doing the dirty work...but we need someone his size that is an offensive threat. We're also small at power forward and stink defensively at power forward. I like Hinrich at the point with Pierce at SG/SF....Gooden, Arthur, and maybe Rush fill out your starting 5.

As I said, we're too small and have no inside threat at all.

Fun to dream though.

I still say Hinrich can put in 15-20 and 5-8 assists a game in the right situation. Too bad he was sandwiched between a bunch of ball hogs (and a shi**y coach in Chicago)

The dragging their feet part of this thing is pretty clearly intentional by the NCAA they've been doing it with a lot of players for a while. Its punishing a player without officially punishing them because that keeps it from being anything near the story it would be if they made the player sit for the same amount of time.

DUDES!

It starts tonight. Exhibition game w/out Selby against Washburn at 7 pm. Sounds like Markieff will play as he has been recovering from a minor injury the last week or two.

I've got in on DVR, but no way to get it uploaded. Sorry.

I could burn it to a DVD, but that would take too much time and effort for an exhibition game.

I'm assuming that is his wife, former KU women's soccer player Taylor Blue.

Little has been awful this game, benched twice for his complete inability to play defense.

Releford is the much better player.

Got a chance to listen to the radio broadcast, and Bob and Pipe pretty much said the same thing but only IF he can be consistent with the game between the ears.

I hope to see a jump similar to what Marcus made early in conference play last year or like Kieff made at the end of last year.
