North Korea threatens 'powerful nuclear deterrence'

By North Asia correspondent Mark Willacy (http://www.abc.net.au/profiles/content/s1889139.htm?site=news)

North Korea has threatened to use a "powerful nuclear deterrence" in response to a joint military exercise involving South Korea and the United States.

Thousands of US and South Korean troops are due to begin the drill tomorrow off the Korean peninsula.

Denouncing the military exercises as outright provocations, Pyongyang's central news agency is warning that North Korea is prepared for what is calls a retaliatory sacred war.

The country's National Defence Commission is also threatening to use a powerful nuclear deterrence in response to the drill, which begins off the peninsula tomorrow.
Washington and Seoul are holding the exercises in a show of strength against Pyongyang.

The US and South Korea blame the North for the sinking of one of Seoul's warships four months ago, in which 46 sailors were killed.
The US says it needs more constructive action and fewer provocative words from North Korea.

they can certainly hit SK and Japan (and the US bases there) hard. That would probably kill in excess of 25,000 Americans easily. Theoretically they have missiles that can reach the continental US, although the test was a failure, they've had several years to fix the problems. I certainly wouldn't want to risk it.

I might dispute a few things here and there, but that whole discussion is irrelevant. We aren't going to start anything, if NK wants to launch an attack, they will. They won't but if they did, its not like we have a mind-reading device or time machine to forsee this and take steps to avoid, we're basically talking about a response.

thats not really healthy either. I'm not a big fan of cable news anymore, they have gone from being journalists to cynical businesses trying to carve out a niche to feed an audience whatever slanted BS and marching orders they want to hear in order to survive on cable.

I prefer the internet because printed articles are forced to go into more depth and reasoning than 15-second sexy (and hilariously dishonest) sound bites. TV news (other than local stuff) is just flat-out useless to me.

I like to hit several sites with known biases and make up my own mind. Drudge Report articles to get the slightly right slant, the guardian to get the outside european "we think the USA is doing something stupid" biased opinion, some of the top writers that make it onto realclearpolitics, cnn.com to get their lame attempt to appear neutral, etc. I've given up trying to find unbiased news, I don't know if its even possible anymore.

I have my own bias, but just because a republican says something I dont automatically believe its true, and just because a democrat says something, I dont automatically think its crap. (e.g. most republicans have this hilarious visceral hatred towards Barney Frank, but even he has his good moments. Specifically, he's pretty much the leader of the movement to get rid of that stupid ban on online poker. Try to get a random political hack from the GOP to publicly get behind that, it wont happen because they need votes from little old church ladies who think gambling is the devil)

But if Obama does hold it it is lose/lose on NK.. We scrimmage and they do not try and nuke them they are just talking more shit like they normally do.. If they do try and send a nuke out, they will get royally ****ed by the US and other countries..

Sucks for SK and Japan if Obama does not react quickly..

Hopefully NK just stfu and stfd.. If they do, do something stupid hopefully the ships there can shoot the missile mid flight..

And you obviously no nothing about me based on that post.

fine, I dont care about the source of your news or your exact politics as much as the fact that your post, if serious, sounds a tad looney to me. If you think Obama would try to talk it out after allies are nuked, that would indicate to me that you could possibly (maybe, maybe not) be in some sort of echo chamber filled with like-minded people who reinforce this particular opinion until it no longer sounds crazy.

This isn't me trying to sound smug by the way, its a kneejerk reaction based on my own experience. I was locked in an echo chamber for a large portion of my life. I once watched Fox many hours a day, thought Limbaugh and Hannity were the greatest things on the radio during Clinton when I had time to listen, and basically stopped thinking for a while because of the right-wing echo chamber.

Everyone in a political echo chamber has the same bias and reinforce each other's opinion, which may be fine except the crazier members of the echo chamber are not disagreed with or refuted, leading to them infecting most of the echo chamber to become similarly crazy. thats not really healthy either.

Thats why I like the BBC-you get the real story not sugar coated

fine, I dont care about the source of your news or your exact politics as much as the fact that your post, if serious, sounds a tad looney to me.

Eventually politics becomes something like an arbitrary football game where you are given a playbook filled with everything you should think, your team should win in November, and the other team should lose.I've pretty much stopped watching the standard news outlets altogether. I still watch News Hour on PBS occasionally as well as BBC.

I certainly hope I am wrong about Obama. Truly I do. Just based on the past 18 months, I have not been impressed with him as all he seems to do is talk and pass blame.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_class_submarine

4 Ohio Class SSBN's were redesignated to SSGN and changed their load out capacity to 154 tomahawk cruise missles. There is no need to launch a Trident if you can park close enough to their land mass to launch a nuclear or conventional tipped Tomahawk.

Any Ballistic Missle Launched from N Korea wont make it out of boost phase anyway. Either due to incompetant design or an SM-3 Missile launched from multiple Aegis Combat System equiped cruisers in the area.

Three of the submarines have been sent to Asia: the USS Ohio to the Philippines; the USS Michigan to South Korea and the USS Florida to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. (Time, July 8)

The U.S. aircraft carrier USS George Washington is also ready to be sent to South Korea.

North Korea, at this point, probably doesn't care too much about the US or South Korea. As long as they throw the first punch (their country is starving and dying anyway).

They have a lot of reason to care about China. And China relies on the US and South Korea heavily for their economy. You can bet that China is the piece that makes these threats empty. While they don't want to defend the US or South Korea, I'm sure they're doing everything in their power to make sure it never comes down to that.

They have a missile that IF it can carry their warheads (which are probably too large and too heavy to be delivered by ballistic missiles) could hit Hawaii. But, I would imagine that we would either destroy it in boost phase, take it out during re-entry or it would just take care of itself. Their tests, BTW, had estimated yields of a few kilotons to about 15 or 20, so these aren't that impressive.

So the US does not back down and then sunday passes-what then?

Then the KCNA reports that it was the "superior mercy" orchestrated by the "Super Great Leader" Kim Jong Un that adverted the crisis. They would portray Kim Jong Un as being a "brilliant leader" who "saved millions of lives due to his superior restraint." Then they would retaliate in some way down the road.

This would transition into the scheduled September meeting of the KWP, which would officially designate Kim Jong Un as the heir to the North Korean throne.

The Kim family has to find a way to make Kim Jong Un presentable to the KPA. However, I think the succession attempts will ultimately fail, because Kim Jong Il had decades to kiss ass and eliminate opposition on his way to the top. Plus, he was the official leader of the KPA for the last three years of Kim Il Sung's reign.

Kim Jong Un is another story, because he is still fairly new to the North Korean political scene. He was only appointed to the rubber-stamp legislature last year. He does not have enough time to solidify his power. Kim Jong Il will be dead within three years and THAT is when things will become really interesting.

That may be true, but all threats do need to be taken seriously to the extent that a plan is in place just in case it becomes reality. Plus, North Korea seems to be waiting for some chance to say that we've finally crossed a line, and they could use preemptive warfare to attack one military exercise before that line is crossed.

I agree the threats need to taken very seriously. However, I highly doubt the North Korean elite is going to go along with any plan that would disrupt their comfortable living standards. The KPA would probably like to continue living, so I highly doubt that they would go through with it. Kim Jong Il and his family constitutes only one-third of the true power in North Korea.

The U.S. will freeze North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's overseas secret bank accounts based on a tip-off from a whistleblower at a state-run bank in Liechtenstein in 2006-2007.

The August issue of the Monthly Chosun said since the North's attack on the South Korean Navy corvette Cheonan in March, speculation has been rife among North Korea experts in Washington that the Obama administration will freeze Kim Jong-il's secret accounts in Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

The tip-off from Heinrich Kieber, a former employee of LGT Bank, which is owned by the Liechtenstein royal family, contributed decisively to the U.S. obtaining information about Kim's secret accounts. According to the U.S. Senate, Kieber said the "head of department in a socialist government" wanted to deposit more than US$5 million "with no explanation in the files whatever in regard to the source of the vast amount."

The U.S. recently signed a tax information exchange agreement with Liechtenstein which could allow it to freeze bank accounts suspected of belonging to Kim.

Very true, but North Korea's technology has been confirmed to be capable of reaching as far as Chicago. If they wanted to do 500 miles less just to be on the safe side of hitting something, Kansas City would be within that range, and it's quite literally hitting the heart of America.

No, it hasn't. Not even close.

As much as I despise Obama (yes he is a socialist at the least....) and is hell bent on federalizing everything, he would respond. But the reason he would is because it would be a political calculation not one of responsibility to his oath of office.

Yes South Korea and Japan would be cooked, and then just watch out for the world economic collapse. China would take over Taipei, Japan and whats left of South Korea. We would not respond to that because the democrats in congress would "piddle, twiddle and resolve" while Rome burned.

Chicago is 10,000 miles from North Korea, which is really far.

Imagine a string that stretched from Chicago to North korea. Can you picture it? Well, that's how far it is.

Amazing, huh?

If a missile were traveling from Pyongyang to Chicago at 100 mph, it would take 5 days to get there. Which would give plenty of time for people to evacuate. In fact, if they left right away and drove westward at 100 mph they could arrive in Pyongyang at the same time as the missile arrived in Chicago. What a nice opportunity to enjoy a traditional North Korean meal of 1/2 cup white rice once a week!

Well shit! I just hit the steak house and got two 2" rib eyes and some monster prawns for the BBQ tonight. I also ran over to Baskin Robbins and picked up two banana splits for my wife and I, to go. I also gave the Baskins ice cream wrangler girl a $10 tip. (Outstanding service) I have to be on a jet tomorrow for a quality week in Kalamazoo, Michigan, but what the hell, I'm going to put away a few quality brews tonight and smoke one of my cuban cigars.

If we're all going to all be taking a dirt nap tomorrow, I figured I would live it up. On a side note, if Kimmy doesn't hit us with a nuke, I'm going to have to put in some extra shifts in the gym to burn the extra calories, so I will have to mail the old cooter a dog turd if that happens.

I have to go for a week long training class for work. Other than that, being a smart ass and drinking beer. I guess they are having a "golf day" one day while I'm there. THAT is going to get ugly, because I can swing a mean fly rod, but a golf club, not so much. I have never been into golf. Or do you not like rice?

Imagine a string made from grains of rice that stretches all the way from Chicago to Pyongyang. Now imagine the size of the pot you would need to cook all that rice. Holy shit that's a big pot!!!
