Triceratops may not have existed

You'll need to brace your dinosaur-loving toddlers for this news: Triceratops may not have existed.
Dino experts John Scannella and Jack Horner at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Mont., have discovered that that the triceratops may never have been its own distinct species, but rather the juvenile form of another dinosaur, the torosaurus.
The New Scientist (http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20727713.500-morphosaurs-how-shapeshifting-dinosaurs-deceived-us.html) reports:
Triceratops had three facial horns and a short, thick neck-frill with a saw-toothed edge. Torosaurus also had three horns, though at different angles, and a much longer, thinner, smooth-edged frill with two large holes in it. So it's not surprising that Othniel Marsh, who discovered both in the late 1800s, considered them to be separate species. Now Scannella and Horner say that triceratops is merely the juvenile form of torosaurus. As the animal aged, its horns changed shape and orientation and its frill became longer, thinner and less jagged. Finally it became fenestrated, producing the classic torosaurus form (see diagram, right). I shared this news with my 5-year-old son this morning. Triceratops was his favorite prehistoric animal when he was in the dinosaur phase, which occurred right after trains but before space.
He looked at me for a long time and didn't say a thing, and then his sweet little smile turned to a sad frown and he said, "Why Mommy?"

It was the same reaction I got when I had to break the news that Pluto is no longer a planet (http://articles.sfgate.com/2006-08-25/news/17307149_1_eight-planets-terrestrial-planets-uranus-and-neptune).

But the good news is that the Triceratops will in a sense live on--huge relief to toddlers, toy makers, my 5-year-old son, Michael Crichton, Pixar... Horner says that Torosaurus "will now be abolished as a species and specimens reassigned to Triceratops."

All kidding aside, this just makes it better.

The Brontosaurus and Triceratops were just younger forms of bigger and better dinosaurs.

I can't wait to find out what an adult T-rex was like.

The following link is completely NSFW. That said, its not often that we have dinosaur related threads here and I've had this image in my HD for quite some time but nary an opportunity to use it.

Until now.

Except they did exist, and the other dinosaur will simply be renamed Triceratops.

Not really a big deal. Misleading title FTL.

If so.. I'm starting a thread mourning the loss of the torosaurus.

This planet is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.
What do you mean, "biblical"?
What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor, real wrath of God type stuff.
Exactly.
Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...
The dead rising from the grave!
Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!

What about the Brontosaurus?

/Ross Gellar mode ON

Actually this sort of thing did happen with the Brontosaurus as well. For the longest time, Apatosaurus and Brontosaurus were considered separate species. The Apatosaurus had a Diplodocus type head and the Brontosaurus had a blunt Camarasausus type head. It turns out that all Brontosaurs are actually Apatosaurs and the confusion was caused by the discoverer of the first Brontosaurus skeleton putting a Camarasaurus head, which was the closest fossil head nearby that fit, with the original Brontosaurus skeleton.

Brontosaurus, although still used in informal language, is incorrect and Apatosaurus should be used in all situations.

This is funny. I never heard of the Torosaurus, but now that I see them, I wonder why it never occurred to the guys who found them both over 100 years ago that maybe they were the same animal. I'm guessing they were stuck on the big-ness of both fossils and just presumed they were different creatures without thinking about it.

Special Agent Oso...holy crap my daughter loves that show, but it pisses me off. I mean, you've got Oso who can navigate asteroid fields in his spaceship, but he doesn't know how to tie a shoe???
