(CNN) -- A competitor has died and another is in hospital following a tragic end to the World Sauna Championships in southern Finland.

Russian Vladimir Ladyzhenskiy died Saturday after taking part in the final of a competition in which contestants are required to withstand rising temperatures for as long as possible.

Finnish finalist Timo Kaukonen was also taken to hospital for treatment, organizer Ossi Arvela said in a statement posted on the event's website.

Images of the contest showed Ladyzhenskiy and Kaukonen sitting side by side in the sauna. Both contestants can then be seen lying on the ground, apparently doused in water. Ladyzhenskiy appears to be suffering from severe skin burns.

"The event was interrupted immediately after the accident. Competition organization grieves these sad events," Avela said.

Finnish police and organizers are investigating the incident, Arvela said. But he said first aid personnel had been in place and all competitors taking part in the contest had provided doctor's certificates. "All the rules were followed," he said.

The World Sauna Championships take place annually in the town of Heinola.

So this begs the question....is sauna a sport?

I'd bet it's the one sport that produces the most sweat without ever actually doing anything.

If you perspire, it's a sport.

I think this fits that category.

It's definitely sad though. According to their fellow competitors, these two guys really persaunafied the sport.

Sorry, but Jason Whitlock's reaction to the Monday morning email that says there are donuts on the 2nd floor does not qualify as a sport.

The sport of sauna suffers higher rates of burn-out than all other sports combined.

Ugh. If you've seen other pics from this competition, it is pretty sick. When the Russian came out, he skin was falling off. Apparently, these guys were getting cooked, literally. I read an article where these guys were enduring temps in the neighborhood of 110 degrees celcius for over six minutes. To put it perspective, water boils at 100 degrees celcius. I think they said the temp was close to 230 degrees fahrenheit.

what the **** is on that dude's face?

LMAO

It's the flash from the camera. The contestants are in a glass-enclosed sauna and when the photographer (whom you can see in the reflection of the glass) took the picture with the flash, the light reflected off his sweaty face and makes it look like something else.

My best guess is that the organizers of this event are actually South African cannibals. They coerce the feast into the oven of their own free will and that way there are no legal obstacles to overcome.

I do the same thing every spring with dozens of lbs of crawfish.
