I started a new job last week. Seems like a good company. Highest paying job I've had. My schedule will be Fri-Sun. 4a-4:30p. 36hrs, but they pay for 40 hrs. Shift differential. The only problem is its 146 miles round trip. I have to do it one more week before I go to my regular schedule. Fortunately, I have a friend in Cincinnati who has offered up his couch for the weekends. He's only 15 miles from where I work.

Whats the farthest you've driven for a job?

That's actually 37 and one half hours, if my math is correct. :)

I've done quite a few that were an hour or so away, but they were all contract jobs that only lasted a couple weeks.

I figure I will give this place a few months. If its a good fit, I will start looking for a place closer.

I did a 110 mile total per day for 5-6 years then switched locations and have driven 90 niles a day for the last 6.5 years.

Bob Dole's current 6 minute drive is hellish.

Used to drive from Nashua (KC North) to Lee's Summit, which was about 45 minutes there and anywhere from 1.5-2.5 hours back.

112 mile round trip. Love the job so two hours in the car doesn't suck. My daily driver gets about 42 MPG so gas is reasonable.

I drove about 160 miles round trip to work for like 5-6 months. I don't think it's that bad, what's your commute now?

I did 160 miles round trip for about 6 weeks for a summer job while I was still in school which included some occasionally bad traffic. Fortunately gas was a lot cheaper then.

If you drive over an hour total, the pay better make-up BIG TIME for the time, wear-and-tear on the vehicle, and "stress" of the drive (weather, dependent)...otherwise you need to seriously consider moving closer, IMHO. Just sayin'.

Mine is about 70-80 round trip, as of now I am a temp, renting, and living light so if it works out it wont be a problem moving closer.

I've never driven farther than 15 minutes. I read an article last year though about 2 men that commute from Flint MI to work at the KC Ford plant.

146 miles round trip where?

It is easier to get a handle on your commute if you express it in time instead of distance.

70 miles on open country highway can be a better drive than 10 miles through LA.

I've never lived more than 10-15 miles away from work; no more than ~20 minutes. I might not mind a longer drive if it was easy and traffic-free, but I'd rather work a couple extra hours a day than spend it driving in traffic.

I spent a year telecommuting, but didn't really like it.... I currently live 6 blocks from work, so it's the best of both worlds.

Any possibility for a carpool? I commuted from Ft. Collins, CO to Cheyenne, WY 5 days a week for a couple of years when I worked for Sierra Trading Post.

We had a group of 4-5 that carpooled, though, so it wasn't that bad. Also, the traffic wasn't bad at all, so we could fly. It was also only like 40 miles each way.

That's one of the best little drives on earth.

First good job I drove 160 miles round trip. After about 15,000 miles in about four months in a Yukon Denali I just moved. It became a much nicer 4.5 mile round trip. Money on gas and wear and tear on my vehicle and overall exhaustion made the move more than worth it. This was mainly all in the winter as well. That really made it suck ass.
