Chiefs Training Camp: Fourth Quarterback Joins The Team

http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/240996/headshot_tiny.jpg by Joel Thorman (http://www.sbnation.com/users/Joel%20Thorman) on Aug 16, 2010 8:16 AM PDT (http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2010/8/16/1625482/chiefs-training-camp-fourth) in 2010 Kansas City Chiefs Preseason (http://www.arrowheadpride.com/section/2010-kansas-city-chiefs-preseason) http://cdn1.sbnation.com/images/icons/comment.v8c9bafb.png 25 comments, 7 new
Eagle eye Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star noticed a new quarterback (http://chiefsblog.kansascity.com/?q=node/1388) with the Chiefs (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/kansas-city-chiefs) this morning before they boarded a bus heading to a movie.
But as they headed out for what would be a cancelled practice, they had a fourth quarterback wearing practice jersey number 9. The logical guess is that the Chiefs re-signed Matt Gutierrez (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/18968/Matt_Gutierrez), who played for them last season and was released at the end of off-season practice in June.
But after a quick glance at the player coming off the practice field, it didn't appear to be Gutierrez.
Teicher also reports that Brodie Croyle (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/2361/Brodie_Croyle) was not dressed in practice gear and had a brace on his right arm.
The Chiefs need three quarterbacks to get through a week of training camp so it's possible -- and this is just speculation at this point -- that Croyle's got an arm issue and a fourth quarterback was needed for the week.
If it's a new player, the Chiefs (or someone) will announce the move likely before the afternoon practice.
Last we heard, Gutierrez was signed into the UF

Putting on about 20lbs of muscle may have made him more durable as well. You can't say he has not been afforded every opportunity to be "the guy", but he has failed miserably. Sadly I don't even think he is a reliable backup since he would most likely have to play in consecutive games, wich seems to be a problem for him.

Brodie has a better arm than Cassel and is better on the deep throws but he doesn't have much touch either.

once again it looks like we have 2 "half" players and if we could just squish them together and make a "whole" player we would be set.

Why would he? It isn't like he has had any injuries where he won't have a good quality of life after he is done getting filthy rich holding a clipboard and having a few operations on his shoulder and tolerating wearing a sling for a while.

No new QB.

Monday morning Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star wrote that it appeared that the Chiefs had a fourth quarterback on the roster. The players didn't practice -- they went to a movie instead -- but they did walk out onto the field in their practice gear. Along with all the players, Teicher wrote, was a new quarterback (#9, Matt Gutierrez's old number).

That someone, according to Kent Babb of the Kansas City Star, was an assistant coach.

"So the Chiefs appear to be loosey goosey today. Apparently they dressed Nick Sirianni, a quality control coach, as the 3rd QB this morning."

Even with the joke/misunderstanding, the "newsy" item of the day is that Brodie Croyle wasn't dressed out for the morning practice and had a brace on his arm. The Chiefs will likely need a third quarterback to get through camp.Maybe it's joke day around the NFL. Vince Wilfork lined up at quarterback at the New England Patriotstraining camp practice this morning.
