you know what cracks me up?

Whitlock was making $150K with the Star...uber famous, long tenured, etc. etc. etc.

yet Dane has stated that Rich Gannon makes $2+M per season being on a B squad analyst team on CBS every Sunday...

I would like to see where Dane pulled those numbers...I don't know if those numbers are valid or not, you'd have to ask Dane, but it seems pretty logical when you compare the kind of ad revenue nationally broadcast NFL games generate with the revenue for a daily local paper in a mid-sized market.

I could swear when I was scanning my dvr earlier, Whitlock was going to be on MetroSports.

I didn't care enough to record it.

One thing you are right about:

He has to show "reckless disregard for the truth" and "malicious intent" since Fannin is a public figure.

http://www.bottomlinecom.com/kcnews/whitlockunprofessional.html

WHITLOCK'S RANT TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL
Former Kansas City Star columnist Jason Whitlock went on a rant on a local sports talk station today attacking his former employer that highlighted exactly how unprofessional he has been during his career.
Whitlock has parted ways by burning bridges at both sports radio talk stations in Kansas City, ESPN and AOL.com.
And now he has totally torched the Star and likely any position with a newspaper in the country.
As referenced here in an earlier story (http://www.bottomlinecom.com/whitlockexitstrategy.html), Whitlock went on a rant against Mitch ("Myth") Albom, Detroit Free Press columnist and author of such famous best-selling books as "Tuesdays With Morrie" and "Have a Little Faith." Albom was recently named the winner of the prestigious "Red Smith" journalism award by the Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) group and Albom was viciously attacked in a column by Whitlock.
Insiders knew the attack on the APSE was a direct slap at Mike Fannin, currently the editor at the Star and formerly the sports editor and Whitlock's boss for 10 years. Fannin had been president of the APSE and was proud of the number of Star employees who had captured APSE awards.
It should be noted Whitlock never won the prestigious "Joe McGuff Journalism" award as the best sports journalist in Kansas City named after the famed Star sports editor---although two Star colleagues did.
Whitlock unloaded on Fannin so badly on the show that at one point when he started telling a story about Fannin being drunk and kissing another (male) reporter at a bar after last year's BCS Championship game, the station cut him off and went to commercials in mid-sentence.
However, Whitlock had done enough damage before being cut off. He accused Fannin of having "an inappropriate relationship" with Holly Lawton, who was the Star's sports editor until her recent announcement that she was leaving the paper. He said Fannin was only interested in establishing a culture of winning awards.
Whitlock said Lawton never should have been sports editor and that Derek Samson (who left for the Sporting News and now Yahoo! Sports) should have been given the job.
Whitlock said that after he had written a column May 26 (his last) he wrote a column about a ticket scandal at the University of Kansas. However, he said, when he mentioned in the column that Yahoo! Sports had broken the story, he was told the Star would not credit Yahoo in the story. He said the Star wanted credit for it so it could enter awards competition.
It was painfully obvious from numerous insiders at the newspaper that Jason Whitlock was an ongoing cancer at the Kansas City Star. Although his columns needed extensive editing, he bristled at any changes.
Any employer who hires him in the future will learn that bitter lesson.

Columnists are journalists. He's not a reporter (another of the myriad types of journalists).I understand the rote definition of columnists and journalists. What I'm saying is that he doesn't do much in the way of actual work. He's a lazy writer who relies on sensationalism to make a name for himself. He doesn't research, he doesn't network unless he's looking to name drop, he picks topics based on whatever is trending hot that particular day. And more power to him. I may be even more lazy than he is and would certainly be thrilled with a 150k/year job that let me get by on so little actual effort.

ChiefsPlanet once considered adding an element of journalism. Not a blog, but...

I find that the real entertainment of this thread is the small core of "intellectual" contrarians who will invariably oppose whatever they believe the "popular" sentiment is on any topic at any time.

Which is fine. I sometimes do the same thing when I get bored. There are probably threads on here where I argue with myself depending on which page the thread is on. ROFL

In fact, I think I was doing it now.

I feel that you just called me dishonest. Not at all.

I think sometimes an individual's reactions are based on how the majority is moving. That's human nature. Some people go with the herd, some people go against. Speaking for myself, I sometimes go against because in that particular moment I see myself as somehow intangibly smarter than the masses, and if they go right then, well, I must naturally go left...

Although I think I do that less now that I used to. Because I'm older and wiser. Which is perhaps another affectation.

I'm downloading and listening to that first hour.

That is the best part especially when he starts crying then throws everyone under the bus and says nothing is his fault.

he's a columnist that writes at about an 11th grade level.....

he has interesting opinions on pop culture, but never took the time to learn how to write....his articles would earn him a C in a frosh comp 101 class...

I don't personally have any love for 'journalists' that can't be bothered to learn how to write...

What makes you think he doesn't pay someone to write for him...wait that is allegedly.

Yea, i listened to about 15 minutes of it, but had to stop. He was coming off very whiney to me and im a fan of his.

So what if he cried hard? He's saying goodbye to what he flat out said is his dream job, writing a sports column for his hometown paper. He knows he'll never have it again. All of this is consistent with what he has said for years, which is that he believed his job at The Star was the basis for his credibility in sports media, and that everything else was "extra".

And now he is saying goodbye to it. He didn't make it this far by being afraid to express himself in a frank and honest manner.

Jason Whitlock is the best columnist I've ever read. An artist and an entertainer who sees no boundaries when he writes his columns. Having him gone from the Kansas City Star makes me feel like a little part of the flavor of this city is now gone.

I wouldn't be crying if I just went from $150,000 a year to $700,000 in salary which is just what he signed for at Fox.

Yes, I'm sure the Fox Sports job softens the blow. Doesn't mean that there isn't sadness at saying goodbye to the childhood dream that he actually got to live for the last 16 years.

Look I know Iím in the minority as I write this but I really liked his takes. Sure they were different than how most people thought but I think thatís what made it fun for me. Was he full of himself many times? Yea, but at least he was obvious about it. You take someone like KK he is full of himself and tryís to make people think he isnít.

I like him as a writer, he was one of the few that I would read because all of the other articles about the Chiefs were like the same person wrote them all. At least he had different takes, whether you liked them or not, it was a different prospective.

But I really liked listening to him, my favorite was when he was on 810 back 10 years ago or so with Steven St. John and a women (canít remember her name). That was the best radio I can remember, St. John and him together were so funny.

Anyway I donít know why so many people hate the guy, he was really different and I guess if you like reading and listening to the same thing every week with the same perspective then we have that down pat, but I liked his ďshtickĒ

Never met the guy before and never really care to meet him just thought I would give me take.

I'm glad you can feel that way Adam.

After about 2003 nothing he wrote really struck a chord with me. At one time I was also one of those who said: "I can't wait to read what he writes on Monday morning". If his articles weren't posted here, I wouldn't have read anything by him in the last several years. Maybe that more of a reflection on me and the sports page in general. Moving over to Sirius radio just put me out of touch with all the local media.

But more likely, it's that the new villain (Pioli) doesn't resonate with me the way the old villain (Carl) did. To me his 'schtick' has just become worn out. And the change of scenery will be good for him.

I don't begrudge the guy. But I won't mourn his loss either. He just didn't mean that much.

I thought Whitlock was a capable writer, but not a great writer by any stretch. I can't think of any specifics because I honestly stopped reading his articles a few years ago. But I remember little things, such as the way he constructed many of his sentences. There were a lot of times I'd have to go back and re-read what he wrote because the structure of what he wrote wasn't that good.

I always found it strange because someone proofread his stuff and never bothered to point it out apparently.

He also had a knack for going off on tangential topics within his articles; which I found very irritating. They weren't slight diversions, rather, the whole tone/subject matter of his articles would change midway through.

Again, I didn't think he was a horrible writer, but for a nationally known columnist, he was pretty weak. He even said himself that he wouldn't have gotten as big as he did without stirring the pot. I'd phrase it a little differently. I'd call it a schtick.

To be honest, I can't really remember a single article of his that stuck out to me. All I really remember about him is that just about every time (though, not EVERY time), I'd read something of his, I would disagree almost 100%. Mary, Mary Quite Contrary. He just seemed to like being controversial whether or not he really believed what he was writing, which made a lot of it difficult to read.
