it needs a battery. You need to be more persistent in finding it.

They're required by law to be battery powered (even if they have an AC connection as well). Replace it and you should be golden.

One time I changed every GD battery in all of the 5 smoke detectors in my house trying to quiet "the chirp" and then found the chirping was coming from a Carbon Monoxide detector I had plugged into an outlet behind a chair, I had forgot that damn thing was even there...Man I was Pissed.

Don't feel bad. Mine start chirping and keep chirping even if I take the battery out. Drives me crazy.

alrighty, everybody is now awake, maybe. 30 secs of pure 'Alarms!' ... but so far: no chirps, this is much better. Thanks everyone! Once again CP pulled together when it mattered!

Soak it in antifreeze. If that doesn't work, beat it with a hammer until it quits.

Stop smoking up under the smoke detector.

Maybe it's an AIDS detector. You should get that checked out.

this thing woke me up about an hour ago, I can't figure out HOW to remove the a/c quick-connect (which is over the battery slot), doesn't really snap off like it should, I can get it to temporarily silence through mashing the 'test' button, but it keeps coming back. I'm going to have to consult w/ someone smarter than me, our maintenance-man should suffice.

Anyone else remember the Loveline segment when the caller had a chirping alarm. Adam and Drew went off for like 1/2 hour on her b/c she apparently hadn't noticed for forever. Sooo funny, she's explaining the problem and every 2 minutes there was a 'beep' and after the second or third, Adam's like 'Uhhh, honey, what's with the beeping.' 'What are you talking about?'

The AC Cnnctr looks like an RJ-45, yet, it's not, and it's as if someone super-glued it in, just to mess w/ me. This really sucks, now. STILL chirpin'!

It was radio. And it's actually happened more than once.

Thanks Red! I was waiting on my mafia account to catch up and had nothing better to do. There was an obvious need for an anti-freeze solution. :p

Untwist the smoke alarm from the base. Would either go clock-wise or counter clock-wise, depending on where it's installed. Usually, the battery, on some models, are either on the side, or on the back after you remove it from the base.

that AC attachment was OVER the battery slot, it was an odd deal. Finally I figured out the ac plug simply pulled straight off (just had to pull really, really hard)

I know back home the heat and super high humidity can set them off , mine were chirping like a flock of canaries most of July back home.

Can also indicate it's time to replace ;)

Anyone who would knowingly render a smoke alarm (which can in some instances (depending on state/provience laws) VOID your home insurace in the event of a major accident) and CREATE an unsafe condition , would probably be stunned enough to root for the Chiefs too. :doh!:

Me, I'd rather hear an annoying chirp, than place my family in harms way

Rules to smoke alarms.
1- test it, if it works, smile and know your safe.
2- Test it, if it don't work, replace the battery
3- If it does ANYTHING besides sit there and come to life during a self test/ or purposly waving burnt, smoking piece of something to check it, REPLACE IT

These little tiny peices of plastic ain't rocket science.

Here try this:

1) Get sledgehammer
2) Apply head of sledgehammer to smoke detector forcefully in a heavy swinging motion (result should be tiny pieces of smoke detector in a splatter fashion)
3) Clean up splattered smoke detector
4) Go to Walmart
5) pick up new detector, swipe your visa and leave
6) follow new detector's installation instructions
