I've heard both.Unless its just nasty hot I roll the windows down and catch the breeze.I can't imagine it making much difference in my truck anyway.

Well in my car, '01 Grand Prix, I get approx. 26 MPG @70 MPH with the AC on.

I could give a shit less about gas mileage, if it's hot out I use the AC. Plus I don't like the wind and the noise from having my windows down.

I do that if it is cool like 40-60 degrees cool but if it is fucking freezing outside I don't.

Years ago the Shell Answer Man told me it was more economical to run the AC than drive with the window down for "highway" driving.

I'm just not sure if he meant more economical for me or the big oil company that paid him to speak?

I shit in boxes.

Sometimes I get caught going through the Jimmy Johns dumpster across the street, guy asks me what I'm doing, I tell him I'm getting my toilet for the weekend.

Well this is interesting, while it somewhat makes sense, I would have never guessed that the AC is actually more efficient than having the windows down. But that is what the first experiment clearly shows.

As for the second experiment....all I have to say is wow...those guys just lost a shitton of credibility to me. Hugely flawed and without a bunch of other data you can't draw any conclusions from it. I really liked the show, but now I'm actually embarrassed for them. Wow just wow.....

AC w/ windows up on highway. Anything else, windows down. I just had a good argument with my friend about this. He thought I was saying it just because I wanted him to turn the AC on because it was so friggin hot out.

Agreed. I think the second experiment is worthless without swapping vehicles and performing the test again then averaging the results for both vehicles.
You can tell itís a very early show though, just look at all the hair Jamie still has.

Switch to Geico, save 15% on your car insurance, use the savings to cover whichever you prefer, problem solved.

I remember the first time I called Geico. They were going to raise my rates by $200 if I switched to them. Geico is a joke.

It doesn't make sense to be uncomfortable for a few extra cents. Turn the A/C on and don't be a cheap ass.

Interesting Mythbusters tests... I prefer the windows down and sunroof open if it's below ~88-90, and didn't think the drag would impact it much.

You mean couldn't

That also wouldn't be enough. There is no absolute "always AC" or "always windows down" answer, it depends on how fast you are driving.

They should have run the test twice at different speeds. Test at 30, 45, 60, and 75. If 75 is too fast, use a car that is acceptable at that speed. That would actually be better too, SUV's have massive drag, period, rolling windows down would not make as much of a difference to an SUV as it would to a smaller fuel-efficient streamlined sedan.

Also, to be really rigorous, they shouldn't switch vehicles, they should switch windows down/AC on, otherwise the AC vehicle might just have a weirdly efficient AC or something.

The answer is clearly windows down at slow speeds, and AC on at super-fast (80+ mph) speeds. The question for each car would be where the breakeven point is. Since SUV's have huge drag no matter what you do, I imagine it would be windows down for an SUV at any legal speed unless you run 10 over the limit. In a smaller fuel-efficient car the breakeven is probably closer to 40ish mph when you should roll the windows up and turn the ac on. (assuming you want the best fuel efficiency, if you dont care just run the ac)
