View Full Version : Elections Most unusual political commercial I've seen.

I realize that 98-99% of you don't give a rat's ass about Iowa, but this commercial is worth looking at just to observe what I think is a daring experiment in political strategy.

(quick background, our governor is basically a slightly-left to centrist democrat who oversaw an embarassing scandal where incompetent regulators incorrectly approved silly huge tax breaks to film companies that cost us a lot of tax money and he also borrowed a lot of money, but to his credit he refused to approve tax increases and he insisted on budget cuts. He is running way, way, way behind (like 15-20% behind) for re-election against a very popular republican who doesn't have a recent record for him to shoot at)

This thread is not intended to say "this guy is cool/sucks, he should win/lose, what a nice guy/idiot, etc". This is just strictly cold calculating strategy. Imagine if he was a republican who screwed up something and is running way behind a democrat opponent if it makes it easier for you to look at it objectively. Do you think this is a smart move in a political campaign?

To just basically come right out and say "welp, I screwed up, but I think I did some things right. Please give me another chance!" Have you ever seen anything like that before?

I think the strategy is good but the commercial was weak.

I agree with that take. I like the approach, but the problem is that the delivery and production is amateurish, and is just as likely to backfire.

I think it's effective because you're sort of diffusing some of the arguments against you. The problem is that if the other side mounts an effective response it can easily turn from a feel good commercial into a punchline.
