I'm looking to pick something up for the trip to KC. I went to a couple stores today and this caught my eye.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/FUJIFILM+-+FinePix+12.2-Megapixel+Digital+Camera+-+Black/9766755.p?id=1218170029241&skuId=9766755

It's got 18x optical zoom and shoots 720p video with sound. Pretty much what I'm looking for at my max price point.

Anyone have some other ideas?

My suggestion is to buy a DSLR. The pictures turn out so much better.
I had a camera almost identical to the one above (minus the 720p video) and I sold it. The pictures always turned out like crap.

I'm not the biggest fan of those super zooms, but at that price, you might be happy with it. I haven't heard the best things about fuji digital cams though...

As long as it's an optical zoom. Digital sucks balls, but an optical zoom gives you great clarity when you're <strike>getting sneaky upskirt shots of the cheerleaders</strike> taking pics of the great football plays on the field.

IF that is your max price point then go for it.. IS it Xd memory?? I generally stick with cameras with SD option..

Hey Clay, I have this exact camera. It takes beautiful pics but I have had a problem with it recently. For some reason, it won't communicate with my pc or my mac when I try to download pics. The only way I can download them is to put the SD card into a reader and plug it in. It won't download them directly.
I dunno, it could be operator error or maybe I need to dump the software and reinstall. Other than that, I've been really happy with it. You can check out Zach's picture thread for some of the pics I've taken with it.

Maybe look at something like this. They also have cheaper fujis that have almost the same features.

Yeah I hear you there. The reason I don't like them is because the lens isn't very good on them. They're about par with the kit lens you would get with a DSLR. Variable aperture, closes down when you zoom out. Better to get a Rebel body and some better glass.

This one comes recommended to me by a jackass, but it sounds like he knows his camera's.

Oh, well, sure. 99% of the point-and-shoots really can't compare with a solid-body SLR. You'll never get the kind of pic with those tiny things as you will with an actual full-size with a real lens; it's like comparing a go-kart to a real car. :) (I say 99% because my camera knowledge is a bit rusty, and I don't know if anyone like Leica or Nikon has made a solid point-and-shoot.)

Pretty much, some of those higher end Canon Powershots are really nice, but they come with a good wide angle. Not much zoom.

This.

This is a little more out of the gate, but well worth it in the long run. It takes fantastic shots.

I'm more of a wide-angle guy since I prefer nature/scenery/travel photography. But, yeah, when you really want to zoom (i.e. sports), you really need an actual camera. I'm sure I'll take my point-and-shoot to Gillette this weekend for the Pats/Bengals opener, and my general shots will look like this

http://www.bryantbulldogs.com/images/mlax/Coaches/Gillette-Stadium.jpg

but when I zoom in for the action they're gonna look like this, LOL

Dude, trust me on this one, buy a decent body and you can always step up to different lens in the future. If you buy a turd out of the gate, you will always own a turd.

Read the reviews on Amazon. They give pretty good coverage of all the pros and cons.
Dslr is good but I won't recommend unless you want to move on to the next step in photography.
Gonzo's issue is probably due to not removing the device safely when he moves his pics. He pulls out too quickly :D

We purchased a Nikon D-5000 I think it was...bout a grand or so here a few months ago. It's heads and tails above everything else that we have used in the last few years. If you got it to spend then go with a quality camera DSLR if you can. Ours is probably more than we need but tired of buying the 200 buck cameras and replacing them every year or so...hopefully this one will last! Good luck with it!

Not really sure how. Did you try a new SD card? Yours might be busted. Borrow one and test it.

I have a Pansonic Lumix I bought used. It's about 2 years old, bought it off Craigs List here in KC. Paid about $125. It's a tweener, more oomph than a Nikon Coolpix or Canon Power Shot, but not quite a full blown SLR like a Canon Rebel. Pretty kick ass camera.

If you don't want to spend the $$$ to get into a DSLR, the Canon PowerShot SX20 IS would be a better option in a long-zoom point and shoot than the offerings from Fuji or Nikon. $350 seems to be the going rate for one, and on Amazon, you can see some of the sample images:

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SX20IS-Stabilized-Articulating/dp/B002LITT3I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1284220254&sr=8-1http://

If you want to spend a little extra, a refurbished Nikon D5000 is a great value. You can get the body with a kit lens for just over $500.
