The rules of the match are that Carlsen will have one minute for each move. The three grandmasters will then have a minute to make suggestions. The world will vote for 90 seconds and the most popular move will be played. If the three grandmasters suggest the same move, it will be played automatically.

If any further proof were necessary about the prowess of Magnus Carlsen of Norway, the world’s top ranked player, he provided it on Friday by winning a match against the world played over the Internet.

The match was sponsored and organized by G-Star Raw, a Dutch clothing company, for which Carlsen is a spokesmodel. The match coincided with Fashion Week. More about the promotion and the match, including video interviews, are on the company’s Web site.

Maurice Ashley, an African-American grandmaster, and Garry Kasparov, the former world champion, provided commentary during the match.

Three grandmasters — Hikaru Nakamura of the United States, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France, and Judit Polgar of Hungary — assisted the world by making suggestions that fans voted for online. Each player is very strong and capable of beating Carlsen, but working together, with the world voting, proved to be a handicap. There were times that the players offered very different ideas for moves and the world never developed a coherent strategy. Carlsen, who had White, gained the upper hand rather quickly and was never really in any danger.

Afterward, the actress Liv Tyler, the other spokesmodel for G-Star, presented Carlsen with a trophy for his victory.

This is the same thing that Gary Kasparov did awhile ago and got his ASS kicked.
